When I pick up a Dave Newman book, I don't want to put it down... and that held true once again with this one! The stories are so raw and genuine, the characters real and relatable. I work at a local community college, and I KNOW these folks, they've all walked through my door. What an incredible storyteller and observer of the human condition. Loved this!!

Brilliant, sparsely written book. Just what I needed. Resonant carefully worded tales of contemporary American working poor people trying to better their lives.
Written with extreme clarity and no melodrama. Reminded me of Denis Johnson’s Jesus’s Son but without even the slight glimmers of redemption that that book hinted at.
