Boris Kagarlitsky, 1917 Sovyet Ekim Devrimi'nden itibaren, Lenin'in "manevî liderliği"nde bir Sovyet "entelektüel sınıf"ın nasıl yetiştiğini anlatıyor. Boris Kagarlitsky, sosyal bilimlerde, fen bilimlerinde, sinema, tiyatro, müzik, yazın, plastik sanatlar gibi sanat branşlarında, felsefede, Sovyet politik deneyiminde, Sovyet enternasyonalist kültüründe değişimleri kaydeden, 1917 Sovyet Ekim Devrimi'nden Gorbachev liderliği ile dünya çapında sosyalist değişimin başarısına, "rapor" niteliğinde bir kitap yazıyor.

Soviet Russian Historian Boris Kagarlitsky's "The Thinking Reed: Intellectuals and the Soviet State, 1917 to the Present" is one of the best history books about the Soviet intellectual history in the 20. Boris Kagarlitsky uses his historiographic methodology when he writes his book which is not "dogmatic" or not "liberally chaotic", but Boris Kagarlitsky tries to understand all the social, cultural, intellectual changes of Soviet society since 1917 Soviet October Revolution.
