Little Town #2

Blood Sport

Rate this book
At first glance, the small mountain settlement of Mount Big Town, or ‘Little Town’ as the locals call it, seems to be a pleasant and peaceful rural haven. Senior Constable Tess Fuller and Sergeant Finn Maguire know better though, kept fully occupied trying to maintain some law and order in a town dominated by the huge feral Bycraft family. Can they recapture fugitive Red Bycraft before he makes good on his threat to hunt down Tess? And what is it exactly that those bikies are up to at their secret retreat and can Tess convince the Sarge that the only way to find out is to throw away the rule book?

I love stumbling across a new author and series and really enjoying the books. And it is even better when a sweet friend LOVED the series too because then it is just about guaranteed I will too.

I don't have time for a full review, but I will have one for you at the end of this series.

J.D. Nixon's writing is fabulous and I am loving these characters. From Tess & Finn who are the two main characters to Jake and Fiona who are secondary characters. They all have a certain charm about them. Well Fiona may not have the most charm but she certainly has a way with words!!

Enjoyed this one just a little more than the first one!!

Fantastic series.
The action in this third installment of the Little Town series is once again constant and fast paced. There's lots of stuff going on all the time (honestly, its easy to get completely caught up in this quirky world). The relationships by comparison are much slower moving, but that pace offers lots of incremental emotional changes and developments which are no less enthralling.
I'm guessing that the "still waters" between the two main characters are running ever deeper and I can hardly wait to see how this clever, talented author breaks things apart and puts them back together in future books.

JD Nixon deserves so much more recognition for her books than what she receives. You never know what adventures she will take her characters on, or what they will go through - and this book was no exception.
There were moments that I was laughing, and then two pages later I was so shocked and revolted by what had happened....and I really enjoyed that!
I love Tessie and the Sarge. Tessie is so strong and determined and her willingness to fight for what she believes in is inspiring, and I am really enjoying the way her partnership with the Sarge is developing.
I can't wait to see what happens to all the characters in the next book

I can't quite put my finger on exactly why, but I really enjoy these books... in spite of the fact that there are several things about this authors writing that drive me crazy.

I enjoy the overall storyline.
I enjoy the characters, both the heroes and the villain's, they are well written.
I enjoy the humor, it's not usually hard hitting in your face humor but rather subtle and it makes me chuckle.
I enjoy the setting of the story both being Australia and a small, backwoods little town.
I enjoy the relationship, usually, between Finn and Tess.

I don't enjoy that this author loves for her leading females to constantly get beaten up... badly... over and over... while the men rarely get even a scratch, in fact the men are rarely around when the women need them. In this book, right off the bat, Tess is shot and then before she even gets out of the hospital she's stabbed. Every book in this series and the Heller series, the female is always seriously injured.

I don't like that this author writes her females as strong when facing the world but then a total doormat when around the "special" men in her life (in this book it's Jake & Finn). She's always apologizing for things she shouldn't and forgiving actions the men have done when they haven't even apologized and should have! I hate that she settles for what she gets from Jake, she deserves better but she defends him to the end. And Finn gets on her case over stuff that is out of her control. If it happened occasionally that would be one thing, but it's all the time in both series.

I don't like how this author drags the relationship that we want to see happen out soooo long. Seriously, I get that sexual tension can be a good thing in a story but it's almost like this author doesn't know how she would write a book if the heroine were actually in a good relationship. Like there couldn't be a good story to tell if the main couple were finally together. It's as if this author won't let the couple be together as long as there are more books in the series that she wants to write, they will have to wait until the very last book is written, and then probably until the last page of that book. There are so many series out there where the "couple" finally get together and are a good team in fighting evil. Those authors still manage to keep the story awesome even though they are together... ex: Night Huntress, Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson, Barrons & Mac from Fever series, etc. And throw in a few more juicy intimate details too! Some authors go over the top with the sex, but this series doesn't have enough. :)

I think those are the main points. So while I do enjoy this series I also want to throw the book against the wall (well, maybe not my Kindle). I wish the author would work on these few things and then I believe the series would rock!! The Heller series especially needs help because those books could drive me to murder (well, murder Heller anyway).

I absolutely loved this book.

Yes, Tess does some stupid things that no one in their right mind would do. But her reasoning behind them is always based on doing what is best for her loved ones, and her own idea of what is right.

I am loving the growing friendship between Sarge and Tess, and was really glad to see Melissa appear in the book. Honestly at one stage reading the previous book in the series I wondered if Melissa was made up just to get the women of Little Town off his back.

The characters are all written well, from all the Bycrafts to Tess's dad, Young Kenny, Sarge...you name it, I think they have been incredibly well written.

I appreciated the two main plots throughout the book - the bikies and Red Bycraft and found both of these well done.

If there is anything I didn't like about this book it is one teeny tiny thing: the fact that Tess refers to Jake as 'honey-boy'. It drives me bonkers. But does it matter? Nope!

This is one fabulous story and I can't wait to get into reading the next in this series.

An extremely well deserved 5/5.

Poor Tessie. Red Bycraft is truly one of the worst socoipathic characters that I have ever encountered. I think he is almost in Hannibal L. territory. That said this book was non stop. Lotss of action and suspense. Tess and the Sarges relationship keeps you continually wondering. Wow Sarge needs to lose that deadbeat Melissa. She is a royal pain. I love that you get to explore a little more of the long standing curse of the Fullers and Bycrafts. Tess's scenes with Denny B. on the mountain will have you in tears. His character will suprise you in the end. Note to Author:JD please hurry up and finish the next Little Town book!

This book was just as impressive as the first book in the Little Town series. The character's continued to evolve as the book did and nothing felt rushed or fake. I loved the sense of humor found in the story as well as the seriousness of the situations that Tess constantly found herself in.

I do have to say that there is less humor in this book than the first but J.D. Nixon made up for it with the highly explosive situations that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Can't wait to read the third book in the series.

Tess is a wonderful strong woman that has a bad habit of doing things that can and has put her life in danger. She is flirting with being TSTL. Most female characters that have that problem I usually hate but she is trying to keep those she love and even those she doesn't safe. I can't get enough of this series.

And the saga continues. Still quirky and fun. This book was a tad bit darker, and my only complaint is that she retells things that about the character from the first book that we already know. I hate in sequals when authors do this.

So, this is my fault. Honest. I didn't like the first one but for some morbid reason, I want to know what happened next. I wanted to feel the hype. Unfortunately, my brain can only tolerate so many OTT, TSTL, and just flat our ridiculous situations that it just seems TOO MUCH. Too forced. Too GD ridiculous. For this lazy review, I'm just going to copy and paste a ranty email to a friend.

So, if you can absolutely suspend reality and try to enjoy utter ridiculousness and absolute unrealistic situations, you might enjoy this one. Apparently, my brain needs a little something more plausible to hang on to. I'll still give it 2 stars for the ability to piss me off and continue to read. (I try to 1-star books that I DNF or don't really like and bring zero emotion to the game.)

If you're wondering, I'll probably be a fcking idiot and read book 3 sometime, but only when my TBR piles absolutely fail me.

I gave the first book in this series four stars. For this one, I'm dropping it to three. It's still a good story. It's just not as well written.

In the first story, there were lots of times when the protagonist would stop in mid-recollection, to explain or remember some obscure fact from her history, and these explanations often lasted several screens on my e-reader. That happened in the first one as well, but I kind of forgave that, because it was the first in the series, and I was still getting to know many of the characters and their backstories. By the second book, it starts becoming a little frustrating, especially since much of the backstory that was explained in book one is re-explained, almost verbatim, in the second. For this reason, I think the second book could've easily been MUCH shorter.

This book also uses a huge number of different speech attributions. I don't remember seeing a single "said"! Again, it was like this in the first book, and there I just thought it was quaint. By the second, it's becoming quote distracting.

As examples: "'That's great!' I enthused," or "'Tessie!' he reprimanded."

How do you enthuse or reprimand speech? Using the word "said" would've worked just fine for those of those examples, and there are plenty others.

Anyway, on to the actual meat of the story. Tessie and the Bycrafts. It's still a pretty cool premise, and Tessie arch-nemeses are still putting her through hell. Near the beginning of the book, I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of Tess and Red Bycraft (hey, it's in the beginning, so no spoilers) running around the nudist colony!

And just to mix things up, there's a new enemy on the horizon too.

Unlike the first book, there isn't really any mystery involved here. But it's still thrilling, and I was still pretty engrossed in the story.

I will probably pick up the third book in the series, just because I want to find out what our heroine gets up to next. And I guess that's a testament to the author - although her writing is beginning to get on my nerves, I will keep coming back for her stories!

I read the first of the little town books last week and couldn't wait for this installment. I enjoyed the nook and loved the interation between sarge and tess.

I love tess's character and see how her character is changing as more happens to her as realistic.

I do question whether her friend and super fiona really could have got to where she is with the way she speaks and I cringe with the other characters at her verbal abuse.

she does make some good points- tess's dad and his selfishness. Yes he is supposed to be dying (though never seems to go for any treatment) and he would like to die in Little Town but when he can see that she has been stabbed , shot nearly raped etc.. you would think his paternal feelings would come into it and he would say I would actually be happier if we were somewhere else and I knew you were safe.

also at times like when she was missing come to be there for her . and not whine re leaking roofs knowing that she has no money

what they all seem to miss is that yes Jake is in a hard place family and her but there are times where he should say - enough is enough he is my girlfriend you can not try and murde her.

or be should at least be there for her. The time she was missing he stayed at work "worrying" you wouyld think he would be there helping to look for her. He does extra shifts to help others was there noone to cover or take compassionate leave

Tess just fails to see that he does things that keeps him happy and not always considers what she needs.

but also and thinking there is something definatly gearing up to happen between the sarge and tess

I love J.D.Nixon's books. The Heller series is a favorite of mine and I enjoyed the first book of the Little Town series, so it pains me to give this book three stars, because while I liked it, I should have liked it more.

My problem was Tess's devotion to Jakey, a man who feels really bad about his brother, the murderer, rapist and brutalizer of women, trying to kill Tess, but (shrug) what's a guy to do. He's my brother, ya know? Not only is Tess devoted, she acts like a thirteen year old groupie when Jakey's around. Maybe the Romeo/Juliet scenario appeals to some and I realise Nixon needed a romance to interfere with the growing connection between Tess and Finn. But Jakey? Jakey is a cardboard cutout, while Finn has become a full blown character with recognizable speech patterns and nuances that help you see and feel what he sees and feels. If Jakey has to hang around, give me a reason. Make him more than handsome and good in bed. Explain to me why a 27 year old woman would be interested in this selfish and self-centered boy.

Will I buy the next book in the series? Yes, I will. I want to see how long it takes Tess to come to her senses. I still love Nixon's style and quirkiness and I'm eager to hear more about the happenings in Little Town. I just don't want an h that might become TSTL.

While the Bycrafts are still after Tess she manages to find trouble in other ways. I did love how Tess was able to give Red a great smack down and get him out of her way, giving her a bit of breathing room. I'm still have trouble getting my head around Tess being able to date a Bycraft, while the rest of them try to kill her.

There are times that I have to question Tess's actions, like when she went after the bikies by herself. There was no way that that couldn't have ended well. I did like that Tess stood up for herself and Kylie, even if they did get the better of her.

I really like the relationship between Tess and Sarge. Sarge seems to always be confounded by Tess, how she attracts trouble, her relationships with the Bycrafts and the town in general. I like how all the preconceived notions that Sarge has about Little Town are getting smashed and he is finding good things about being there. It doesn't bode well for some relationships in his life, but I think he will be better off without them.

"Wow" is really all I can do after reading the last sentence of this book. I thought that the first book in this series was gripping but this one was just as heart-stopping. I love how the author keeps Tess incredibly strong-willed and stubborn. She's an amazing character. But showing every now and then the side of her humanity in small spurts of breakdowns but remaining the incredibly strong character that she is.

I've never liked a female character in a book as much as I like Tess Fuller. She's definitely a role model one aspires to be. And Finn aka Sarge compliments her so well. Their partnership is amazing.

I have to say I love the non-love, spine-tapping angst this book gives me for wanting to drive the Sarge and Tess together but it not really happening. It's driving me insane and making me need more in hopes that a little something more with blossom between the two.

P.S. I despise Melissa

Tess is definitely one of top favorite female characters. She is tough and fearless. She spent the beginning part of the book chasing as well as fighting off Red Bycraft while the latter part dealing with bikers engaged in heinous crimes against under-aged girls. I enjoyed the chemistry and teasing between Tess and Finn as well as their comfort level with each other. Finn was so caring and protective of Tess. He made sure Tess was well fed and stocked up on Tim-Tams. To me, they are such a perfect pair and I felt angry when reading scenes of Finn with his spoilt socialite fiancée, Melissa. It was unbelievable that he could be engaged to that girl. I am waiting desperately for Blood Feud.

I enjoyed this more than the first book in the series - there's lots of action and more of a story, less domestic detail. Tess is a good character even though she does completely dumb things; like other reviewers I found her father's pathetic selfishness and her boyfriend's apathetic gormlessness hard to believe - that they both make her stay in a town where half the population keep trying to kill her and do nothing to stop it. There were lots of nauseatingly violent scenes which are somewhat at odds with the humour and quirkiness of the story, and the wrap-up was a bit disappointing, unless she's going to finish off some of the bad guys in later books...

Great read! Poor Tess still keeps getting in trouble with the Baycrafts. They are a nutty bunch! It was good to see Finn and Tess's working relationship/friendship grow. I still can't figure out what Tess sees in Jake besides a good romp in bed. He doesn't stand up for her at all when dealing with his evil family...and some of the stunts they pulled on her were pure evil. Nixon is great at writing a compelling crazy family! Now on to the 3rd book in the series.

Another excellent book by J.D. Nixon. Well developed characters. Great villains, wonderful relationships between the characters. I only hope that JD did not pattern her main characters in the Heller and Blood series of books after personal experiences. If she has, we should all take up a collection and buy her a suit of armor. Plenty of action, romance, and tense moments that will keep you reading until the very end.
