Digging for Sylvia: a golden shovel poetry collection

Rate this book
A short collection of poems inspired by the poetry of Sylvia Plath

What was the appeal and how did I come to create this collection of golden shovel poems? First of all, I fell in love with Plath’s biting language. I felt a kinship in the way she used metaphor, but it was her choice of words that punctured through the often opaque imagery that caught my attention.

As I read more of her work, I started to understand her more. Eventually I felt that many of her poems spoke to me as a person with a chronic illness, because I also often feel removed from the rest of the world.

I have found that the confines of the golden shovel form force me out of my usual syntax. It also helps me to create more original imagery. The form helped me to push my poetic practice to another level. I hope you enjoy reading these poems as much as I did creating them.
