Two estranged sisters, one father accused of murder, zero time to catch up.

Ivy and Rose share only one thing: a father they don't know. Ivy, an on-leave FBI agent with a predilection for order, and Rose, a reformed hacker with a knack for chaos, are summoned to their father's private investigations office when he goes missing. The sisters come running and finally meet—over his assistant's corpse.

With their dad the number-one suspect in this brutal murder, Rose hatches a plan to pose as his partners. She and Ivy tackle a wealthy client's case in a small town with big secrets, all the while digging up dirt on the townspeople's ties to their father and his assistant's death.

Can these odd-couple sisters work two cases, or will one of them be next to disappear?

Fans of Janet Evanovich, Jasmine Webb, and TV's Castle, who like traditional mysteries with twists, red herrings, and humor, will love this fast-paced series opener.

Interesting character development between the sisters. Easy to see this as a series you would follow. I was disconcerted by what felt to me like a very abrupt ending. Occasionally it was difficult to remember which sister we were following. There is a lot of jumping back and forth between their thoughts.

Yellow Tape by Alicia Ellis – Review

Yellow Tape by Alicia Ellis is a lively contemporary mystery that teams two estranged sisters, Ivy and Rose, in a twisty and humorous whodunit. Ivy, an on-leave FBI agent who thrives on structure, and Rose, a reformed hacker who thrives on chaos, are summoned back into each other’s lives when their long-absent father goes missing and his assistant is found dead, with their dad as the prime suspect. To untangle the mess, the sisters pretend to be his new partners and take on a wealthy client’s case in a small Georgia town full of secrets, red herrings and unexpected alliances, all while trying to uncover what really happened to their father and his assistant.

At first the quirky contrast between Ivy’s meticulous instincts and Rose’s bold improvisations made solving clues feel fun and unpredictable, and I genuinely enjoyed watching them forge a bond amid sleuthing and banter that softened their past distance. The mystery kept me guessing, and the way Ellis explores trust, family and fresh starts kept the momentum moving briskly despite occasional slower stretches.

Rating: 3 out of 5 because its sisterly chemistry and clever plotting made it an engaging start to a promising series.

Rating based on beta reading. It is very likely the issues I had were resolved. But 4 stars on a mystery is still HUGE for me.

In Alicia Ellis's novel, Yellow Tape, the first in the Gray Girls Mysteries series, two half-sisters—an FBI agent and an IT specialist and former hacker—meet by chance in the horrific aftermath of their father's disappearance.

The news about their father's disappearance takes aback both Ivy and Rose Gray. Their father is a private investigator and man who has been much missed in their lives. Upon arriving at Gray Investigations, the two discover the dead body of his assistant, Anna Baxter, who had notified them of his disappearance. To their shock and dismay, the Oak County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the case, names their father as the major suspect in Anna's murder.

To get the opportunity to interrogate a large number of individuals in the southern town of Willow Lake, Georgia, Ivy and Rose decide to investigate one of their father's continuing cases, which concerns a missing Monet painting owned by a VIP client. Surprisingly, the client offers to hand them a note she acquired from their father's office secretly in exchange for them waiving the investigation fees. As the investigation into suspicious parties affiliated with the client develops, one of them is discovered dead, and the painting is found in her possession. Unexpectedly, the client does not want the two to investigate the murder and further issues a terrifying message: "Tread carefully. Willow Lake can be quite unforgiving to those who stir its waters.”

The reader is in for a thrilling and unpredictable trip as two sisters who have not seen each other in twenty-eight years nervously stare each other down, each hoping to learn more about their missing father. Given their divergent viewpoints, backgrounds, and methods of operation, deciding to work together is an extremely challenging endeavor. Sibling rivalry continues to mount as they near an ultimately unclear discovery. Moreover, as they conduct their inquiry, a number of claims concerning their father and the deceased assistant intensify doubts that might further exacerbate the mental divide between him and his two daughters.

The compelling aspect of the writing is the author's ability to misdirect the sleuth reader owing to her amazing grasp of subtleties and a terrific sense of foreshadowing. And while she works to answer one mystery, other mysteries also start to appear, keeping the reader interested and involved the whole time. Fear and anxiety are skillfully evoked early in the novel by the clever use of the daughters’ resentment toward their missing father, which also prompts readers to consider their own actions in a similar circumstance.

Quill says: With its intricate relationships, dual narrative, hidden secrets, and cliffhangers, Yellow Tape by Alicia Ellis is an intelligently plotted mystery that soars above the level of extraordinary family dramas. A rereading may be necessary to dig up the nuances you may have left behind during the first reading.

**Review of *Yellow Tape: Gray Girl Mystery* by Alicia Ellis**

**Rating: ★★☆☆☆**

*Yellow Tape: Gray Girl Mystery* introduces us to Ivy and Rose, two half-sisters who are thrust together by a series of dramatic events surrounding their estranged father’s disappearance and a murder. With Ivy, a meticulous FBI agent, and Rose, a former hacker with a flair for disorder, the stage is set for an intriguing dynamic as they pose as partners to uncover the truth behind their father’s alleged crime.

Ellis weaves a tale that promises the thrill of a mystery with a dash of familial drama. The idea of combining Ivy’s order with Rose’s chaos has potential, and the setup of a wealthy town with hidden secrets adds layers to the plot. The humor and red herrings sprinkled throughout hint at a classic detective romp, reminiscent of Janet Evanovich’s style and the intrigue of *Veronica Mars*.

However, despite the engaging premise, the pacing of the novel left much to be desired. The story’s progression felt sluggish, with moments of tension and excitement frequently overshadowed by lengthy expositions and slower narrative developments. While the characters are well-defined, their interactions sometimes struggle to build momentum, making it hard for the story to gain a steady rhythm.

In summary, *Yellow Tape: Gray Girl Mystery* offers a promising concept with its unique character pairing and investigative twists. However, if you prefer fast-paced mysteries, you might find the slower tempo a bit challenging. Fans of traditional mystery formats with a focus on character development might still find value in the story’s intriguing setup.

An Interesting start to a new series about half-sisters getting to know one another as they search for their missing father, a private investigator named Caleb Grey. Their birthdays are three months apart, so you already know Daddy was a hound dog. But he is their daddy. In their thirties, the girls have never actually met, but they knew of one another all of their lives. They will actually meet, for the first time over the corpse of their father's assistant in the tiny Southern town of Willow Lake, Georgia.

In their normal life, Ivy Gray is an FBI agent currently on administrative leave in Southern California. Rose is a southern girl whiz kid self-employed computer hacker. Both are called by their father's assistant, Anna Baxter, who requests they come to Willow Lake and help her find Caleb. Instead, they find her - shot in the head at her desk at his office. The local cops who also know Caleb Gray's ways consider Daddy to be the prime suspect in Anna Baxter's death. Both daughters are afraid he is victim number two or on the run to avoid being victim number 2.
We are left with an exciting, satisfying solution to the murder of Anna Baxter, but a cliffhanger regarding Daddy's whereabouts.

2 sisters, a missing father and a Monet

It begins with two estranged stepsisters arriving in the town of Willow Lake in search of their missing father, a private investigator who runs an investigation agency. His last case before disappearing involved Mrs. Isabel, a wealthy woman who hired him to find her missing Monet painting.

This first book in the series is a contemporary mystery, more of a slow burn than a thriller, alternating between the sisters' POVs and ending on a cliffhanger.

The plot revolves around the missing painting, with the father's disappearance as a backdrop. The storyline is engaging, with the straightforward narrative allowing readers to guess the connections between the incidents happening with the sisters and guessing its relationship to the missing painting or their father. The bittersweet relationship between the sisters adds a layer of humor and warmth, making readers root for them despite their snide remarks at each other. The plot twist was good and unexpected.

The plot at some parts did feel a little dragged hence the 4 🌟 rating.

This is a great crime mystery and very much worth the read. The story was really well developed and the characters were mostly enjoyable. There were a few annoying personality traits, but I don’t generally critic those things because we’re all wildly different people with different tastes. The story itself was well worth the time!

With that being said, about 95% of this book has absolutely nothing to do with the descriptive blurb. The book does not focus on solving the case of their missing father, it’s just sprinkled throughout the book as the sisters focus on solving another case. There’s also a lot of character backstory that is missing for both the main characters, but maybe that will develop in future books in the series.

The copy I read was an ARC with a warning that it still needed final editing, but honestly it was so well written that there were only a couple of places that stood out to me as needing work. I received this ARC for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved this book!

Ivy, an FBI agent, and Rose, who does something with computers, meet for the first time when they find out their father is missing. They both go back to his home in Georgia, even though they're each estranged from their dad. Once they get there, they stumble on a dead body and take on the case of one of their father's clients, hoping to find out what happened to him.

I loved everything about this book, especially Rose. Ivy is likable, but Rose is gutsy and funny. She would do things that made me cringe with worry for her, all while Ivy was the consummate professional.

The setting: The novel is set in a small town in Georgia, but it's not atmospheric. It's more of a typical small-town setting with interesting but average everyday characters.

Also, the mysteries are interesting with plenty of depth.

The best way to describe this book is to say that it's a rich, almost cozy, but definitely legit mystery novel. I highly recommend it.

After having read Alicia Ellis’s YA sci-fi mystery series Flesh and Metal, I was looking forward to reading more of her mysteries, and the “Gray Girls” did not disappoint.

I found by-the-book Ivy and very-much-not-so Rose to be interesting and compelling main characters I enjoyed getting to know. More often than not, their strong personalities set them on a collision course, yet they turned out to be a formidable team whenever they managed to get over their various hangups and brought their respective strengths to bear.

I was a bit disappointed that their investigation of the mystery that brought the sisters together - the disappearance of their father - didn’t seem to make much progress. But since this is the first book in a series, I assume more pieces to that puzzzle will be revealed over the course of the following books.

This is the first book I have read by this author, but when Hidden Gems offered the ARC, I thought it sounded interesting. It did not disappoint and would like to see where the Gray sisters go after this story. The story reminds me of a Hallmark movie with sisters who inherit a PI office.
Ivy and Rose Gray come together when their father is missing and find his personal assistant killed in his office. Both girls are estranged from their father but have been called in to help him. Ivy is a buttoned-down FBI agent, who is currently on-leave indefinitely. And Rose is a former hacker and free spirit who is the complete opposite of Ivy. Their personalities and skills complement each other as they investigate what happened to their father and they need to take on another case from their father’s business.

I enjoyed this well-paced book about two very different half-sisters, who are actually strangers to each other, coming together to investigate their father's disappearance and the murder of his assistant. Ivy is a straight-laced FBI investigator on leave, while Rose is a bit of a wild child, with computer hacking capabilities and a questionable past that we don't learn much about. Early on, I wasn't really a fan of Rose, but she grew on me, and the character development of both Ivy and Rose, as well as the many other characters, was very well done. The book was entertaining and well-written, but I strongly disliked the ending, which is why I am only giving three stars.

Ivy and Rae are half sisters that have never met until their father's assistant reaches out that he is missing. They arrive (separately) to find that the assistant has been murdered in his office. Now there is a murder as well as their missing PI father to solve.

The sisters are quirky but likeable. One is very much of a follow the rules while the other is throw the rules out the window. They have to learn to work together which does not go smoothly. Small town characters that interaction with our duo are very believeable.

This is more of a cozy mystery type than thriller. My biggest complaint is the story ends with too many things unresolved. I don't want to say what as it would spoil the story.

Received as a review copy from Booksirens, this is an honest review. Yellow Tape is this beautiful mix of intense family drama through sisters Rose and Ivy as their individual worlds collide over their shared father having vanished, leaving behind the man's assistant dead with the womens father presumed to have done the killing. When they find themselves forced to find whose behind the priceless art theft from done of their father's clients; Ivy and Rose find this to be the key to search the town and question everyone they can to solve tow crimes that seem to linked together in a web of the town's secrets. It's their not so legal way of going about the investigation that unravels the truth they their own lives.

Highly recommended.

I read this as an ARC and thought it was a cute story; it went into a different direction than I anticipated.

I liked the dynamic of two sisters finding each other for the first time and jumping into their father's business. They each had perfect skill sets for solving mysteries, investigation and crime fighting.

However, I see where the writer was going with getting people in the town to trust the sisters, but it doesn't make any sense they worked so hard to find a stolen piece of art before finding their missing father, or the murder of his assistant.

I see how the story line kind of sets the tone for the two sisters to start working together but its clear finding their missing father should have taken precedence.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one in the series. Each chapter was from a different main character's viewpoint of what was happening at their point in the story. The author kept me guessing which I loved. Just when I believed I figured it out, the author threw me for a loop with something I didn't see coming. I sort of got lost for a few pages in the middle, like the overall pace of the book slowed down and I had trouble following. But the book overal was great! And the book tsught me a little about art.

What do a missing person, two deaths and a "copied" painting have to do with each other?

When the book starts and you think it is going to be about a missing father and two half-sisters. As things progress and get dicey, you find out there is more to the story than the missing father. Wealth and privilege don't make things any easier. The twists and turns and how everyone is involved keeps you on your toes and, at the end of the book, still wanting more. Cannot wait to see if the half-sisters survive each other in the next "chapter" of their lives.

This book was decent. I ordinarily love mystery books. I felt by the end that most things were resolved. Only, we never found out what happened to Caleb. This frustrates me to no end. I need to know what happens next and I feel like things aren't wrapped up nicely like they are in most books I read. Other than that, I loved this book. The plotline is genius, and everything seems straightforward. It was fun to try and guess what was going to happen next, and this book sure kept me guessing. This is a definite must read!

A captivating thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Ellis's writing style is engaging and draws you into the story right away. The characters are well-developed and relatable, making it easy to become invested in their journey. The plot is full of twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end. Ellis does a fantastic job of building suspense and creating a sense of urgency throughout the book. Overall, "Yellow Tape" is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a gripping mystery novel.

I loved it! I enjoyed the push and pull between Ivy and Rose, that turned into a very productive relationship by the end of the story. I liked the fast pace. The women were always on the go searching for clues about the painting or their dad's disappearance. Once again it's the least likely people that have their mental break from reality and wreak havoc. Some very dramatic and intense scenes that are edge of your seat quality. I thoroughly enjoyed this journey with one crime solved and on to the next one for for this dynamic duo. I'm here for it all!! I'm looking forward to more.

I enjoyed reading this book. I liked the relationship between the sisters in the book. They had me laughing at some parts because I can see the dynamics between them. I liked how the author tied in the theft of the painting to the murders. There were times where I thought that I knew who did it and then was so wrong. I am looking forward to reading more in the series.

This is a new author to me and I mostly liked the story that I read and I kept tuning the pages. By the end of the story, they were no closer to finding their father and didn't have any clues, hence why I said mostly.
There was a little too much unfinished, but I will gladly read some more from this author.
