I eventually grew bored with this narrative and I found it did not grab my interest. Try as I might, I couldn’t get excited about the story and felt that not a lot happened. By the time the big reveals came at the end, with some high action scenes, I had mostly lost interest in the story.
This is part of a series. I have read the first two and by now, book three, we are seeing Olivia on the cusp of retirement with her boyfriend, Brian. You don’t really need to know anything about these characters because the cases they are presented with in this book are isolated from the other stories. In my opinion, this book still wasn’t as good as the opening story and I don’t think the writer really captures the excitement and intensity of the first plot.
However, the opening scene is pretty shocking as readers see an awful crime scene with no apparent motive. This leads to Brian being pulled in to help as Olivia supports an old friend with a messy marriage separation. I could not tell whether Olivia’s client was fully telling the truth and I think I yearned for the writer to add more twists and turns to this plot. Instead, it became just a mundane divorce with accusations flying from both sides. Yet, in the final scenes of this story, I thought it was most interesting and really could not have foreseen its conclusion, making me read a paragraph more than once!
Brian’s subplot is linked to the opening scene but again, I don’t think I was ever fully invested into it. There were plenty of suspicious people that could be behind the crime but I couldn’t get too excited about the investigation. I liked Brian’s character – he is definitely a “Mr Nice Guy” – but thought that sometimes he was a bit too placid. Instead, I enjoyed the scenes between him and Olivia, seeing his caring attitude when it is evident that Olivia might not be safe on this final case.
Overall, I thought this book was a bit of a disappointment and I was glad to have finished it. Whilst I hadn’t enjoyed the second book very much, I was hopeful that this one would be better. Unfortunately, I don’t believe the writer had the same powerful plot as the first instalment, so I don’t think this is a series I would continue, should Olivia come out of retirement any time soon.
With thanks to HQ and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was okay. Positives: ✅Love how Olivia is always hungry even when she's stressed. Bored with all these people in thrillers like "oh I'm so stressed that I can't eat!" ✅Love domestic Brian. A few things that irked me, although didn't ruin the overall story were: ⭕Mikala never actually put any clothes over her sexy undies before she stormed out of the house to the club?? ⭕Felt like 2 separate stories smooshed into one just for the novel word count. Would have been better as 2 novellas.
Love this series! Olivia Sinclair is an attorney in Marin County and getting ready to retire, along with her Pi boyfriend, Brian , to Lake Tahoe. But her old friend Lauren convinces her to take one final case and it is a doozy. Ava is trying to escape the clutches of her evil and domineering husband but it isn’t easy. The twists and turns of this case are constant but Olivia and Brian work together to drive it to a thrilling ending.
Olivia is still at it, even on the cusp of retirement, and she and Brian make not only a great team but also a great couple. Paired together in another gripping addition to the series, they must work together to find their suspect in a murder, help a potential divorcee escape her alleged abusive husband, and stay alive to see their retirement through to fruition.
I love the Olivia Sinclair series! I was effortlessly pulled into the drama and glued to the pages well past midnight (when I had to get up early in the morning!). What a fantastic novel. Olivia is one of my favorites.
This is my first novel from this author and sadly I think it will be my last: the plot just never really grabbed me, it was too slow paced and I just didn’t particularly enjoy it. I would rate it 2.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, HQ and the author for the chance to review.
The suspect by Terry Lynn Thomas. Publication date set for the 5th of December. This is my first book by this author. Good paced story. Good book. I will read more books from this author.
THE SUSPECT kept me on the edge of my seat and turning pages trying to figure out exactly what divorce attorney Olivia Sinclair and her detective boyfriend Brian have gotten themselves into as Olivia takes on one last case ahead of her retirement. Love these characters and their connection, and the ending I didn't see coming! This is a great suspense series to sink into!
