Something HUGE is coming… set in a world where humans and giants live in uneasy peace, two detectives from either side of the divide must work together to solve a bizarre crime!
Perfect for fans of fantasy detective fiction, it’s Chinatown meets Roald Dahl’s The BFG, in an all-new comic from the superstar team of writer Adam Rose and artist Magenta King.
After a race of giants emerged from deep sleep beneath the earth, a bloody conflict ensued in what became known as the Omega Event. Eventually a treaty is resolved and a the state of Brobdingnag is created, allowing humans and giants to co-exist harmoniously.
Yet tragedy threatens to shatter the peace, when a string of murders and disappearances sweep the United States. But a human and a giant with sizable detective skill are on the case – Detectives Tamaki and Gyant.
As the pair attempt to stop the criminal at large, they find themselves involved in a mystery bigger than either could imagine.
Written by Adam Rose (Corollary) and illustrated by Magenta King (Jenny Zero) this all-new story is a neo-noir fantasy with hard-boiled giants and grizzled cops, as these most unlikely partners must work together to solve a convoluted mystery.
“It’s fantastic! Noir, homicide, and giants. A weird mash-up that absolutely works. Go grab it!!!” – Patton Oswalt
Decades ago The Huge began emerging from underground in Australia. Needless to say humans were frightened and like with most things humans don’t understand they try to kill it. A war broke out but eventually The Huge and humans learned to coexist.
The Huge occupied Australia, provided transsportation for humans and in return humans provided The Huge with human goods and luxuries. Life was good.
Until The Huge and humans are murdered. That’s where The Huge named Gyant and the human Tamaki detective team come in.
Somehow a human who is imprisoned can communicate with a giant-in this case Gyant. He leads Gyant on an underwater venture to discover a dead giant and a mysterious mask.
Meanwhile a giant skeleton has dug its way to the surface of the Moon and is heading toward Earth.
What have all these events have in common? That would be telling!
In Huge Detective 1 writer Adam Rose (Corollary) and artist Magenta King (Jenny Zero) and publisher Titan Comics, questions will be answered and not in they way you may think.
A clever script, awesome art and perfect coloring all combine to make the square-bound comic book Huge Detective #1 a ‘HUGE’ hit!
John 16:33 - These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
This is a fun idea. The execution is lacking though. The premise is that one day giants around the world woke up. They took over Australia and still fight a predilection for eating normal sized humans. Now someone is trying to start a war between humans and giants and a human and giant detective have to figure out what's actually going on. The subplots about a human that thinks he's a giant and the giant corpse that is going to crash into the earth make this needlessly complicated. A simplified plot would have helped here.
Cool premise but the writing is messy and the story is not edited well. Giant people return to earth, fun! Than a semi-boring cop story takes over and is not so fun. A giant is hired to help a cop solve a mystery that involves both humans and giants, but I could not get interested in it. The characters are pretty flat and I had a hard time caring about any of them. They should have never added the Manny storyline, it was lame. Art is middle of the road, not terrible. I would skip this.
3.5 stars overall I really loved the premise of this; combining kaiju and Gulliver's Travels and the land of Brobdingnag being (re?)created on Australia and all was going well 'til nearly the half way mark and unfortunately there it took a Scooby-Doo turn, with a hint of pantomime (appropriate for the time of year that I read the book). Too bloody for a younger reader, I just felt a little bit disappointed by the end.
The world-building in this book was wonderful. It still carried a great detective through plot line with all the giant/huge overarching story. This will be a great series to recommend to readers at my shop who don't like superhero comics or horror titles.
Dont know if it matters but i read this as issues 1-5, and i gotta say the writing was not great. The premise was okay but also random. There was no explanation or backstory. It was a mix of interesting story, but poor execution (to me).
