I was impressed by writer Zack Kaplan’s surreal series from Vault, Beyond Real, which dealt metatextually with existence and the dehumanization inherent in the systems that compose the rules of our society. That was coupled with some terrific artists doing creative work so the magic was no doubt hard to recapture.

Kill All Immortals, published by Dark Horse is a much different book but many of the themes and ideas that made the central spine of Beyond Real compelling are explored in new, brutal ways. Ultimately, Beyond Real was an existential story about hope and finding meaning in a world where our options are limited by forces beyond our control. Kill All Immortals, though, is a much angrier book. Not necessarily cynical but it is much more interested in exploring the cruelties and barbarities of our world. That is apparent just looking at the physical comic. Fico Ossio’s art is gritty, scratchy, and grotesque.

Immortal Vikings, violent face-offs, and family drama combine to make an epically gripping read told through art that beautifully conveys emotions, as well as the bloody aftermath of them.

An excellent read by Zack Kaplan and Fico Ossio.

11/5/2025 One of the closest comics in feel to a popular action movie, tho that's not necessarily a compliment coming from me. Kill All Immortals Vol 1 has a very specifically cinematic, Christopher-Nolan-filming-in-the-semi-dark vibe, and if that's your thing, then you're going to love this graphic novel, too.

The action starts with a cadre of Fortune 100 businessmen getting slaughtered by a group of very buff blond men who go by the name the Asvalds. Their victims can hardly believe that this family of Scandinavians would go to such lengths over mere business dealings, but the Asvalds are the original corporate raiders, happy to back up their reputation for brutality to their own advantage.

Well, all of the Asvalds except Frey, the glamorous daughter who'd rather watch fashion shows and do charitable work instead of getting involved in business and its attendant violence. Her latest boyfriend Owen Jabari is a journalist who's covering her good works for a feature profile. But when they're waylaid while driving in Kenya, Frey is forced into action to protect them both from ruthless mercenaries who aren't afraid to hold them at gunpoint, or worse.

Ordinarily, Frey is happy to fly under the radar and toe her family's line regarding power and discretion. But something snaps in her with this latest encounter. Bringing Owen with her, she travels to the Asvald's Icelandic home to have a confrontation that will soon see her at loggerheads with her own family and the secrets that they've spent centuries protecting.

I love this cover, and think it perfectly captures what a badass Frey is. Her depiction and the ending twist were very much the highlights of this title for me. The rest of the story mostly treads the territory between formulaic and underbaked, with a few interesting fillips that show real potential. Overall, it is perfectly adequate entertainment that would have been bumped up significantly in quality if the action sequences weren't so darned confusing. It honestly felt like the comic book equivalent of watching one of The Dark Knight trilogy movies: I know there's fighting going on, but actually figuring out who's hitting who and with what takes more effort than it should. And if you enjoyed those movies -- I thought they were perfectly adequate -- then you'll like this book too.

I am definitely interested in seeing where the ending twist leads, and hope this creative team launch themselves into spectacular new territory after establishing the back story with this first volume. While I didn't necessarily find Frey's final reckoning with her family to have had the most organic outcome, I'd definitely give this title at least one more collection before deciding whether it is truly For Me.

This is a pretty solid set-up, following a family of Vikings bestowed with humanity. In the modern day, Freya's relationship with a reporter poses an existential threat to her father's empire, thrusting her into conflict with her immortal family.

The character and story move along at a very fast pace, making for a fun adventure. Fans of The Old Guard will likely be pleased, though this story comes with slightly more explanation leading more than a few twists.

The art by Thiago Rocha and Fico Ossio deserves special note for bringing the adventure to life in vivid and very-released sequences.

There were a few beats that came a little bit out of nowhere but otherwise it still a fun and fast read.

Much more interesting conceptually than in execution. A very external comic, expressing (yelling!) every possible thought it has on the page and leaving no room for subtext or nuance. Wants to be both high concept and a frenetic action comic, but the messy art makes both parts a chore to read. The story (and the message it's trying to convey) would be so much more interesting if the brutal combat was used more sparingly and in key moments, rather than a constant barrage. There's no levels, which is frankly boring. Also they buried the lede in the epilogue for some reason, which is insane. I will not remember this comic in a week.

I really wish this had more substance to it *sigh*

The concept isn't very revolutionary, but it's lacking.... something more to really make it stick. Immortals, vikings, hostile takeovers, secrets. the usual trappings are here, but some character motivations seem undercooked, and even if the inevitable happens in the last issue or so, it still doesn't land well. This felt more proof of concept than a fully fleshed out story.

Also, including Succession in the tagline to give it some gravitas is kinda insulting to Succession. That is much better written and more compelling dialogue wise.

Billed as Succession meets John Wick which could only be true if you've never watched either of those properties. Yes, a powerful family is involved and yes, its bloody. The end. The book was devoid of thought and reasoning. No character development as decisions were made by the characters that defy reason. The plot was awful. The dialogue might have been worse. There were no stakes and next to no intrigue, except for a random twist that made little sense. The art by Fico Ossio was fine but there were some really strange faces. Overall, a quick, bloody blip soon to be forgotten.

What if some conspiracy theorists are right? That is the thread that Zack Kaplan uses in Kill All Immortals with Eric the Red discovering something that made him and his adult children immortal centuries ago. Now, his daughter Frey Asvald wants out of the family business and pairs up with a reporter. But how far is she willing to go to get free. What is she willing to do to discover how to kill an immortal. Read and find out?

P.S. Interesting hook at the end that hints that there may be more to come.

I like the parts where Frey kicks ass, love a viking woman who rips people to shreds. Art had some cool fight scenes throughout this, too. Otherwise I didn't love it, I think it went a bit too big fantasy action franchise without having anything new worth saying. It's like Fast & Furious the way everyone keeps saying "family" this and "family" that. Their biggest struggle with immortality is whether or not they want to kiss someone, wow boohoo.

Immortal vikings. Come on, how could I not?

I often have a difficult time rating graphic novels. I read them in one sitting so I don't have the time connecting to it like a regular book. The story and characters lacked some depth but this was exciting way to spend 30 minutes of my day and *I think* a good set up for what's to come. I'll definitely be checking out further editions.

So it's early in the story, but this all felt like just a reason for immortals to kill each other 😆 I mean it makes sense, I know that's the point (and the name). I wanted more attachment to the story and the characters. Run fight kill, run fight kill, fighty fight fight. There is potential here, but without some compelling story driven substance I might bail on this series.

Norse characters bought in to modern day is somewhat a trope that has been done a lot and ‘Kill All Immortals’ doesn’t offer too much new. That said, having the main character be Frey over Thor etc is a little refreshing. It’s violent, it’s over the top and it’s quite safe. But if you’re venturing into something Norse related you could choose worse than this.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, the premise was very intriguing, but in actuality, it lacked context and character building. I wanted to know more about the characters, especially Frey, as well as the immortality aspect.

I prefer more story and characterization over pages of action and bloodshed, but this is a worthy continuation of the tale.

Typical story plot, lots of blood, violence, and mediocre writing. Everyone is trying to write the next stupid action movie and it’s understandable and sad.

Turns out Leif Erikson is immortal along with his children. After a thousand years, his daughter has had enough when he tries to kill her boyfriend and she turns on her family. I found the premise intriguing. I didn't engage with the long fight sequences though. They just felt like random snippets of fighting as opposed to a fight sequence that flowed together. I also felt the art was weaker in these sequences. I really liked the stinger at the end and it makes me want to see more of this series.
