EXCERPT: It was the day before Christmas Eve, and I was ready for my guests to arrive. The beds were all made up, I'd put flowers in the rooms and plenty of towels. I'd decorated the Christmas tree and in a spurt of unexpected enthusiasm got out all the other decorations, hoarded over the years, to cover every surface with little light up houses, candles and ornaments. Stephen hadn't approved of a lot of them, he said it made the place look tacky, and it probably did but I didn't have to worry about his opinion any longer.
I'd put a small Christmas tree in the attic bedroom for the girls and decorated the staircase, which looked marvelous with a swag of artificial greenery, some fairy lights, and festive ribbons and under the tree, an exciting pile of presents beautifully wrapped and decorated. Even Marty, who had voiced the opinion that sticky tape was not needed on a properly wrapped gift, couldn't fail to be impressed.
I went to open the fridge door, to have a last look at all the things in there. A very pleasing collection of lidded boxes neatly stacked up. I had even bought a pineapple, some goat's cheese, and fresh figs and I can't stand any of those things. Then I went on to the pantry to admire the stocks of emergency gin and Baileys, and the monstrous turkey that had been soaking in brine and spices for two days.
I took a deep breath. Everything was ready and, courtesy of the big bowl of potpourri on the hall table, the house smelled of Yuletide cheer. I felt a little bubble of happiness and hope well up inside me. I'd been through some dark times over the last few years, but now perhaps I had got a grip of my life again, and I was ready to sow it to my family.

ABOUT 'SISTERS MAKING MISCHIEF': Joy Chandler has had enough!

All she wanted was a lovely family Christmas with perfect turkey and luxury crackers. Instead, daughter Sara announces she’s getting divorced...and where is the fizz? MY THOUGHTS: I love this uplifting book from Maddie Please best of all the books I have read by her.

Maddie writes with realism and humor. Both characters and the situations they find themselves in are relatable.

Maddie has always loved Christmas - the joy of bringing all her loved ones together under one roof has meant a lot to her. But since Stephen left, the wheels seem to have rather fallen off the wagon, and this Christmas was worse than ever! Dejected, she heads off to visit her sister Isobel in France.

Isobel and her mother-in-law Eugenie would warm any heart. Eugenie plays on her age, but she is a wily old bird. Isobel is the antithesis of Joy - a fly by the seat of her pants kind of person. She and husband Felix fight like cat and dog yet clearly adore each other. The villagers are all welcoming, but seem to know everyone's business, including Joy's. And what they don't know, they will make up!

I loved Joy's gradual awakening and acknowledgement of all that was wrong in her life. Her bucket list of goals/changes she wants to make to her life is brilliant. I could take it and make it my own.

This is a fun, warmhearted and poignant story. I read it with a smile on my face, and that smile has stayed there ever since I finished.

I received a free copy of, Sisters Making Mischief, by Maddie Please, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Joy thought her Christmas was going to be relaxing a typical, but then her daughter, Sara, said shes getting a divorce. her son John and his wife Vanessa, are going to New York, so Joy decides to go to France, to visit her sister Isabel. This is exactly what Joy needs to get away, and find herself again, I really enjoyed this book.

Joy is excited about having her family over for Christmas. She wants everything to go perfectly. She decided at the spur of the moment to see her sister in Europe. This book made me laugh.

I'll admit it this author is an automatic read for me. Why you may ask. Because of the author's humor and situations where people actually do what you would want to do in the same situation but don't dare to. In other words, I love this feel-good relaxation book packed with laugh out loud moments and have more than once nodded my head yes to certain situations.
A nice and relaxing Christmas holiday was what Joy was expecting as she waited for her daughter and her family to arrive for the holiday. She had been eagerly expecting her daughter, daughter's husband and two grandchildren vesting. Instead, she got her daughter arriving without her husband and in tears and the children sullen and rude.
A divorce is in the works for her daughter and she's hitting the bottle hard. Her son arriving with his family will surely work out better. When the siblings are together, they seem to be fighting worse than the children.
Where's this relaxing holiday with family?
When her sister suggests she visits her in France we see the real Joy come to life again.
While her family seems to be in shock that she's left them she comes to realize there's more to life than being at their beck and call. While sister Isobel beats to her own drum she gets Joy to open up and live life a little again. The experiences are marvelous and not at all what she was expecting but will she want to go back home again? The book left me smiling and happy. Quirky characters, fast paced, and I loved the dialogue amongst the characters. I'd sum this up and sunny and delightful!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

I had previously read Old Girls on Deck by this author and enjoyed it so I was looking forward to this one. Sisters Making Mischief started strong. I laughed several times as I was reading it.

The ending was also very cute. Similar to the beginning - it was witty and funny. The middle of the book was not as strong for me. I think I expected more escapades with the sisters.

The story is one of finding yourself and reinventing yourself after tremendous life change. It is an uplifting message and I love that the characters are older.

If you enjoy feel-good women's fiction, especially if you enjoy humor you should definitely give this and some other books by this author a go.

Sisters Making Mischief is a charming and hilarious story packed with humor, heart, and a hefty dose of chaos! Maddie Please masterfully captures the trials of family dynamics, aging, and rediscovering one’s self, all with a lighthearted touch that reminded me of Bridget Jones.

Joy’s escape from the pressures of being the family “dogsbody” to her sister Isabel’s rustic potato farm in France is both relatable and laugh-out-loud funny. The misadventures in France, paired with the sisters’ witty banter and mischievous antics, make for an uplifting and entertaining read. While the setting brims with charm and a dash of ooh la la, the real magic lies in the characters and their quirky, endearing ways.

That said, a few French errors pulled me out of the story momentarily, but they didn’t dampen my overall enjoyment. This book is perfect for anyone who needs a feel-good escape and a reminder that it’s never too late for a fresh start—or a glass of fizz!

If you love warm, funny, and life-affirming reads, grab this one and let Joy and Isabel’s journey lift your spirits. Maddie Please delivers another winner!

Joy wanted a nice family Christmas after struggling for the last 3 years to come to terms with the breakdown of her marriage after her controlling husband left for a younger woman. She had the perfect Christmas all planned out but it was anything but... Her daughter had just found out her husband had cheated and her son and his family was going to move to New York. It was a terrible Christmas where she did everything and her family complained.

Her sister Isabelle invites her to stay with her in France and tells her to let her daughter and her two girls stay at her house, whilst she joins them in France. Whilst she is there all the fun starts and Joy realises how controlling her ex was and how it is never too late to put yourself first.

This was a lovely book and it shows your never too old to start again, life is for living and don't sit around waiting to die (like Izzy's MIL).

I would recommend this book, as I enjoyed the pace of it, and it did make me laugh out loud many times, especially when the sisters are together

The first novel I read from this author was Old Birds on Deck which I enjoyed, so I was looking forward to reading Sisters Making Mischief. Joy has had enough. She just wanted a wholesome family Christmas without and drama, but clearly what was I possibly to achieve. Her daughter announces she’s getting divorced and her son and his family are moving to New York all whilst expecting Joy to wait in then hand and foot. She’s had enough and decides to head to France to spend some time with her sister. It was a pleasant enough novel with nice characters but I can’t say the book really grabbed me. It improved once Joy went to France, but I was expecting the sisters to have more escapades and that just didn’t happen. Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and the author for the chance to review.

I had such fun with this book! It truly was delightful! I didn't want it to end, and when it did, I had to wait to start another book, so that I could savor the feeling it left me.
I do think the title is a bit misleading. The sisters don't so much make the mischief, but rather find themselves falling into one silly antic after another. There was certainly loads of good fun along the way. There were so many adorable, witty moments that left me smiling and even chuckling out loud.
The book kept me on my toes, wondering what would happen next.
The best part was the development of the main character, Joy, growing into herself. It was wonderful to witness her revelations as she began to understand the person she had become and figure out the life she wanted to lead moving forward. It was really quite profound. The book is peppered with so many good nuggets, reminding us - or making us think - about how to live our own life.
Amidst all the fun, it was a tender, warm, poignant story that filled me with a strong sense of love.
I will definitely be looking out for more books by Maddie Please!

first of all, thank you, NetGalley, for providing me with this arc in exchange for an honest review.

i can honestly say that from the very beginning, joy was kind of making me angry. She was just always complaining!!! and she wasn't even putting any effort into her family, she just LOOOOVED to complain about them all. not going to lie, all of her family (kids and grandkids) were getting on my nerves, and it continued to be so until the end of the book. i know i mentioned joy complaining about them like three times already, but they also weren't showing her an ounce of respect.

moving on, kind of started vibing with joy after she went to visit her sister in france. also, liked the french phrases, kind of helped me with my french and i learned a couple of new phrases. so, thanks for that! but again, i was expecting to see sisters spending time together, just you know, some wholesome family moments between the duo, and we did get them, but just not enough. a bit disappointed.

and for the end, we have luc. where did the romance come from? i was not expecting that at all. still don't know how i feel about it, but good for them, i guess.

KU Free Trial | No irritating, shoehorned-in misunderstandings! | I really enjoyed this one, and good thing, after not being enthused with the last couple of hers I read, and hating some similar other authors I tried. A big part of the difference was this book not having an unnecessary moment where the protagonist gets offended for no reason and decides that the man she barely knows is being intentionally rude to her, so makes a fool of herself by flouncing around being a real bitch to him in retaliation for the imagined slight. There was a moment when I thought "here it comes, she's taking that the wrong way and getting frosty", but she shook it off. I had been about to give up on the genre, but I'll give it another chance.

This book was a fun and uplifting read, making me laugh out loud multiple times. I especially loved the bond between Joy and her sister Isabel, which added depth to the story. Joy’s personal growth throughout the book was beautifully done, and I love how she came to realise that it’s never too late to prioritise yourself and live life on your own terms.

This book was an absolute joy to read, I truly adored it . There’s something very refreshing about reading books based on characters in their sixties and how they are doing all they can to enjoy their lives . The main character Joy has decided after having her family spend Christmas with her that’s she is going to spend some time with her sister Isobel in France . This wasn’t something Joy had planned to do but after the Christmas she has had she needs a break . This book made me smile so much as we follow Joy’s adventures in her sisters home in France . There were many times I laughed out loud . One of my favourite characters was Isobel’s Mother in Law Eugenie, who was such a wonderful and funny character. I laughed out loud so many times at her comments she was truly hilarious . There was also a touch of romance to the story . To sum up Sisters Making Mischief is a gorgeous read that I thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend.

Joyful and inspiring. While written about a senior aged woman, there is much in this book that can serve as inspiration for any age, male or female. Joy starts the story stressed, trying to provide her children and their families with the perfect family Christmas. That doesn't go well. Joy soon comes to the realization that while she's growing older, she isn't growing older happily. She decides a trip to France to spend some time with her more spontaneous, enjoy the moment type sister. Isobel is a delight, full of humor and genuine love for her husband Felix, who runs a book shop, and Joy gradually comes to realize that her priorities had included everyone but herself. That's where the story really begins to take off.

It's a delight. Not because it's easy, but it's wonderful to see someone not only realizing all they have allowed themselves to miss out on but taking action to make changes. I won't detail the plot other than to say that it was fun, full of humor and adventure. Even Isobel, already living her best life, finds a path to making it even happier with Joy's more disciplined focus and ideas. Joy finds....well, I doubt I'm giving away anything to say she finds the possibility of second love. She also learns to tolerate rambunctious, fun-loving dogs, Marcel and Antoine, who have distinct personalities, too. I mean, while Joy's adventures, or should I say misadventures (wait until you see what she does to a Chanel outfit, borrowed at that), provide humor, some of the scenes involving the dogs made me chuckle aloud. Let's just say, leaving their footprints in newly poured cement and Marcel's frustration at trying to get a too long branch through a too narrow opening will make dog owners everywhere grin.

So lots of humor and lovely descriptions, but it is the message of living every moment that will resonate most with readers. As a senior myself, I found myself unconsciously nodding as Joy sorts out where she lost herself and how to find her way. Her bucket list is definitely interesting. While I have no interest in some of the items, I took notice of her repeated idea of not having to make things perfect for everyone else. It's a big moment when she finally removes her wedding ring, signaling openness to a new relationship with the initially rather mysterious Luc. In fact, some of the early humor is of everyone conjuring up ideas of his past, Isobel's mother-in-law seeming convinced he is a medical doctor. Uh, well, maybe not, Eugenie, but he may be the answer to what ails Joy. What a delight to see the very realistic relationship develop between them, slow, stumbling build and all.

Bottom line, I loved this book and am wondering how I have managed to miss Maddie Please books before this one. I will definitely be remedying this soon, I assure you. Thanks so much #BoldwoodBooks for introducing me to Joy, Isobel, Felix, Eugenie, Luc, and, yes, those fun ones. I appreciate the early look and will be avidly looking for anything else from Please. Loved the virtual trip to France, that's for sure, and the imaginative glimpses into Joy's thoughts. I'm pretty sure I'd want to be her new best friend if she were a real person. It was wonderful to see her take charge of her own life.

**Sisters Making Mischief by Maddie Please**

From the very first page, the author draws me into a captivating narrative that revolves around the themes of family dynamics and the journey of self-discovery. This charming tale is a delightful blend of warmth, humour, and uplifting moments—truly a feel-good piece of women’s fiction.

Joy sets out with the simple aspiration of enjoying a perfect family Christmas. She envisions a festive celebration filled with a golden-brown turkey, luxurious holiday crackers, and the comfort of her loved ones surrounding her. However, her idyllic plans quickly unravel. Her daughter, Sara, unexpectedly drops the bombshell that she is getting a divorce, turning Joy’s hopes for a nice bubbly family Christmas into a bitter disappointment. Meanwhile, her son, John, along with his seemingly perfect wife, Vanessa, share the news that they are moving to New York City. To add to her exasperation, Not even a single family member has taken the time to make her a cup of tea!

Feeling overwhelmed and unappreciated, Joy makes a bold decision to step away from the chaos and negativity of family life. She heads to France to visit her younger sister, Isobel, believing that a change of scenery will provide the emotional reset she desperately needs.

Isobel runs a rustic potato farm in the picturesque countryside of France. Although the farm is far from luxurious, Joy relishes the chance to reconnect with the more carefree version of herself that seems to have been lost in the demands of family life. As Joy immerses herself in Isobel's vibrant world, she begins to reflect on her role within her own family. Does her family only see her as a caregiver? Where has all of Joy's joy gone?

During her stay with Isobel, the energy is infectious. The sisters share boisterous laughter and playful moments, and their time together uncovers an adventurous side of both women that had been long suppressed. The lively atmosphere of the French countryside injects a much-needed dose of excitement and romance into Joy’s life. Before long, she finds herself navigating new opportunities—whether it’s exploring a charming local market, meeting a captivating new man who shows interest in more than just her culinary skills, or beginning a new job that reignites her passion. Joy starts to embrace the mantra that you’re never too old to embark on a new journey.

The vivid descriptions of Joy's experiences and her tireless pursuit of every opportunity make the story come alive on the page. My only criticism of this beautifully crafted story is that I found the ending too abrupt; I wished for more time and additional chapters to savour the conclusion and delve deeper into Joy's transformation.

Sisters Making Mischief by Maddie Please was a book was so beautifully written from start to finish. The author Maddie wrote this book with so much love it showed and was a breath of fresh air to read. It bought back memories of my own Mum trying to make everyones Christmas special, but we all forgot how hard she worked trying to please us all..........I so needed tissues at the beginning of this book......Before you know it. . . . . . Your mum is just memories of Christmas - and never will be the same for me. So this book made me sit back and think about my Christmas's when I was younger.

So, Joy Chandler has had enough!

All she wanted was a lovely family Christmas with perfect turkey and luxury crackers, and everyone to have a lovely family time together.

But, That wasn't going to happen!!!!

Her daughter Sara announces she’s getting divorced............

Now, her son, John and his so called perfect wife Vanessa announces, they are leaving for New York, in the New Year…......... All Vanessa is worried about are her vegetables etc organic?

Joy, is counting up to 10 and this is not the first time she has done this since they have all been there!..........Not one of her children or anyone has asked if she is ok and would she like a cup of tea! She feels like she is their personal slave!!!! and dishwasher!!!

Thats it!!!!! Joy decides she’s going to leave them all to it and head to France to visit her younger sister Isobel. She so needs a break from it all. This is what the doctor ordered!!!!

Isabel’s home is called The Potato farm in France, it's old and very rustic, but its loved and you can call it home.

Joy is now hoping to find a bit of the old her again and to breath fresh air again......Some me time with her sister Isobel.

Will Joy's family really only think she's their dogs body?

Where has Joy’s joy gone?

Are they going to miss her?

Joy knows being in Isobel company for a few hours she will be laughing and enjoying her life again. Isobel always has the way of doing this especially as she is loud and chaotic. Being together brings out both sisters’ mischievous side! Now, being in France adds a welcome touch of ooh la la to Joy’s life again.

Soon, she has a new job, maybe a new man will walk into her life and maybe even, a second chance at living!

WoW. . . . . . I loved this book so much I highly recommend it. It will make you cry, smile and laugh out loud.
A wonderful read.

Family Christmases sadly aren’t always the joyful and love-filled celebrations seen in Hallmark movies. Joy so wanted it all to be perfect, had done so much preparation, and was looking forward to showing her adult children how well she was coping on her own after divorce – only to find her daughter hitting the bottle after her own husband’s fling, her son and daughter-in-law more focused on upcoming changes in their own lives, and the grandchildren all playing up big style. And as well as all that, none of them shows willing to lift a finger to help – so the opportunity to go and stay with her sister Isabel on her potato farm in Brittany once the festivities are over, leaving them to sort their own lives out, is a welcome one.

Isabel’s lifestyle may be a little chaotic, but the warmth of her welcome does Joy a world of good – and sorting out the brocante in the barn, perhaps looking into valuing some of the items and putting details on line, helping her brother-in-law add an English section in his bookshop, along with adding decorative touches to the soon-to-arrive shepherd’s hut (if that base ever finally gets finished – the pace of life is rather different there…) will more than fill her days. And as well as enjoying time with her sister, wishing she’d done it rather sooner and more often, she also gets to try out her French conversation with others in the surrounding community, all wonderfully drawn – including Isabel’s eccentric and ever-present mother-in-law (a fantastic character, who made me laugh so much!) and their mysterious near neighbour who becomes a potential love interest after a less than auspicious start.

Joy’s stay gives her plenty of time for reflection too – a chance to decide what she really wants from life, particularly when she realises her family at home are getting on with their own lives just fine without her. There are so many funny scenes – a fair few that still make me laugh when I think about them – but a number of really well-written emotional moments too, as Joy discovers a bravery she hadn’t thought she was capable of. I really loved her, and identified with her so strongly – she’s very real in every possible way, trying so hard to find her way and recover her zest for life, and I was willing her on at every setback and obstacle.

The setting is perfectly drawn, that taste of armchair travel that I always so enjoy – and I thoroughly enjoyed the relationship between the sisters as it was slowly rekindled. Her whole time in France is infused with the warmth that her Christmas singularly lacked, with Joy grasping every opportunity and new experience that came her way, having fun, and never putting things off until a tomorrow that might never come. It’s never too late for a fresh start, whatever your age and circumstances – and sharing Joy’s determined efforts to live her best life was an immensely uplifting experience. This book really was an absolute delight – and one I’d very much recommend.

This is a delightful story that mixes family drama, self-discovery, and sisterly escapades with a touch of French charm. This heartwarming novel follows Joy, a woman at her wit’s end with her ungrateful family, as she escapes to rural France to visit her free-spirited sister, Isobel.

The story opens with Joy’s chaotic Christmas spiraling out of control. Her daughter Sara announces a divorce, her son John and his perfectionist wife Vanessa reveal they’re moving to New York. Thankless chores mark the much anticipated holiday and there’s a distinct lack of gratitude or joy! Frustrated and exhausted, Joy makes the bold decision to prioritize herself for once and head to France, seeking solace and adventure with her sister, Isobel.

Once in France, the novel takes a vibrant turn. Isobel’s potato farm is far from luxurious, but it’s rich in character—just like Isobel herself. The dynamic between the sisters is beautifully crafted: Isobel’s bold, carefree nature is the perfect foil to Joy’s initially reserved demeanor. The rustic setting and French charm help Joy reconnect with a version of herself she thought was lost. Their mischievous adventures are both hilarious and touching, as Joy learns to embrace spontaneity and self-worth.

What makes Sisters Making Mischief stand out is its balance of humor and heartfelt moments. Joy’s journey is relatable for anyone who has felt overlooked or taken for granted, and her transformation is both satisfying and inspiring. The addition of a budding romance brings a sweet and hopeful layer to the story, while the novel’s themes of second chances and rediscovering joy resonate deeply.

Maddie Please’s writing is as warm and lively as her characters. Her sharp wit and vivid descriptions make the French countryside come alive, and the relationship between Joy and Isobel is the heart of the book. Their antics are funny, and their shared history adds depth to the story.

Joy’s journey reminds us all of the importance of self-care, the power of sisterhood, and the joy in embracing life’s messiness. Perfect for fans of uplifting women’s fiction and stories that celebrate starting over.

Being with Isobel is loud and chaotic and being together brings out both sisters’ mischievous side! And being in France adds a welcome touch of ooh la la to Joy’s life again. Soon, she has a new job, a new man and maybe even, a second chance at living!

My Opinion

Joy has been looking forward to celebrating Christmas with her family, until they all begin to arrive. When Joy’s Christmas isn’t as perfect as she pictured, she takes to opportunity to head to France to stay with her sister. Whilst this book begins at Christmas it is not overly festive, with the majority of taking place just after the New Year – so this book can be read at any time of year.

For me this was an absolutely delightful read and Maddie Please has once again focused on some older characters – but do not let age put you off, they will still make you laugh.

I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Actual rating is 3.5 star.

Little bit of a mixed bag. I didn’t like Joy’s family, specifically her kids and grandkids. Like, wtf? Have some respect for your mother/grandmother. She’s not a servant, for starters! My mother would have put all of them in their place…which brings me to Joy. Joy kinda lets them treat her poorly, in my opinion, and does nothing more then complain about them…a lot for the first while. In all fairness she was just hoping for a relatively uneventful Christmas with her family only to have a divorce announcement and a moving away announcement dropped on her. So, she lets her daughter, and her children move into her house and takes off to France to visit her sister.

Her sister, Isabel, has a potato farm in France. Once she gets to France, things get better and less…annoying. The sisters have some pretty entertaining banter, and Joy has some amusing adventures. Joy starts to learn that it’s okay for her to put herself first and that’s good. The lady needs a perspective adjustment. I will say I was a bit disappointed that the sisters didn’t have more adventures together.

I did enjoy the French the author plugged in there. My French is about a decade and a half of rusty, so I really enjoyed that words and phrases were dropped in there, even if there might have been a mistake or two, especially because it’s taking place in freaking France. There better be French somewhere in the book! Lol

Conclusion

The book is mostly a funny fluff read, once you get over the complaining. It really drives home the idea of living for yourself and actually living your life instead of just existing.

I totally felt Joy’s pain in having gone overboard to have a wonderful Christmas with the family to have it backfire somewhat with no one really lifting a hand to help. I was infuriated for her although I did have every empathy with what Sara was going through and would probably be the exact same.

The story really takes off when Joy goes to visit her sister in France. The idyllic location and one of the most unforgettable characters in the form of Isabel’s mother-in-law. OMG she is hilarious and I don’t think there was one part of the story where she appears in that I wasn’t laughing. She really is brilliant and even though I could imagine what a pain she could be at times, I absolutely adored her.

There are so many wonderful elements to this story with Joy trying to work out what she wants from life. Giving a helpful hand to her sister and brother-in-law with their businesses as she certainly has an eye for things. Along with this we have an interesting love interest who seems to have an air of mystery to him. I thought Joy was so brave and it does inspire you in wanting to make changes to your life.

Sisters Making Mischief was the perfect reading tonic that picked me up. I adore stories set in different countries as there is a feeling of escapism whilst reading and you can easily visualise yourself doing the same thing. Hands down this is one of Maddie Please’s funniest books with plenty of laugh out loud moments that still make me laugh now thinking about them. A joyous and uplifting story that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

Sisters Making Mischief by Maddie Please is the most charming contemporary novel that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I always enjoy novels by Maddie Please as she writes with warmth, welcome and wit. Sisters Making Mischief is like the sun appearing on a grey day, it cheers the reader from the start.
The reader, along with the main character, is transported from a tense Christmas in Britain to a carefree new year in France. The atmosphere and problems in England are in complete opposite to the carefree, fun atmosphere at her sisters in the French countryside. There is a new life, along with new possibilities awaiting.
The lead characters are in their sixties and there is a sprightly mother-in-law who is eighty four. They all show that life is for living whatever your age. It is glorious to see characters not in the first flush of youth enjoying and being invigorated by life.
Maddie Please injects much humor into her tale. With an accident prone lead character, I found myself literally laughing out loud throughout the story. There were some truly hilarious scenes.
A family has stunted the life of a character. She has been a wife, daughter and mother who has shouldered all their problems. Now, newly divorced, it is time to learn to live again.
I absolutely adored Sisters Making Mischief. It was a wonderfully warm and fun read, with wholesome characters who inject life and love into the reader’s day.
I will leave you with my favourite quote:
“Love starts with a feeling but continues as a choice.”

Sisters Making Mischief by Maddie Pease is an entertaining story about a woman finding her own way at sixty-three, after a divorce, and her realization that her grown children are capable of living their own lives. All they wanted to do in her house was make a mess and argue. Her granddaughters were entitled and grumpy. After a Christmas week during which Joy felt pretty much a maid-of-all-work, she decided to go spent some time with her sister in France. She was the polar opposite of her sister, but maybe that was what she needed right then. After a small accident on the road, which she had caused through inattention, she arrived at Isabel’s which was the jumbled mess it always was. She started cleaning and organizing immediately. Isabel had two very lively dogs and a mother-in-law, as well as a husband. They were all entertaining.

Isabel had a couple of rental cottages and a barn that was sort of an antiques showroom. What it was was a mess. Isabel was a dear but she had different strong points than did Joy. Felix, the husband, wanted to, and did, set Joy up with a recently local man, Luc. Things didn’t work out at first, but soon she was seeing herself as a real person and her relationship wit Luc flourished. This was more of a slice-of-life novel than a real plot. It was a coming of age novel for a grown woman. It put on paper feelings most older women have and made them real and acceptable. It was a fun read.

First, Joy’s character development was a highlight for me. Her transformation from the overlooked family member to someone who rediscovers her zest for life felt genuine and relatable. I especially loved how you contrasted her life back home with the freedom and chaos she finds in France with Isobel. The emotional shifts she experiences were well-paced, though I think the story could benefit from a few more reflective moments where she contemplates her evolving relationship with her children—this could add even more depth to the character.

Isobel, on the other hand, is such a breath of fresh air. I loved how she acted as a foil to Joy’s more restrained nature, but it might be interesting to see a bit more vulnerability from her, too. It would add balance to her character and deepen the bond between the sisters, especially as they support each other.

The humor in the book was delightful and often had me smiling (and sometimes laughing out loud), but I think there’s potential to explore a few more “serious” moments, especially with Sara’s divorce and John’s move to New York. These plot points felt like they had a lot of potential for emotional impact, but I sensed they were resolved quite quickly. A bit more tension before Joy escapes to France might make her journey feel even more rewarding.

Lastly, the setting in France was wonderfully depicted, and the atmosphere was rich and vivid. The potato farm was a great choice—so unexpected yet perfect for the themes of simplicity and reconnecting with life’s basics. I think it’s a great metaphor for Joy’s situation.

Joy is doing her best, carving a new life for herself after her marriage breakdown but her offspring are wrapped up in their own lives. Christmas is the final straw, Joy needs a change of scenery and heading to France and her sister Isabel’s abode is it! What a difference!

Joy is a character I loved. The longer I spent with her, the more I saw her change and grow for the good. Maybe a trip to France was her ‘personal greenhouse’ to become Joy again rather than a mum, wife or grandmother.

Eugénie made me chuckle. At times she seemed determined to try to rile Isabel as a stereotypical mother in law. And Isabel, she was a delight. She brought Joy out of her shell with her sibling banter! You wouldn’t have believe they were that age!

Please transported me to rural France where I found peace amongst the chaos Joy found herself in. I was away from the hustle and bustle of working life in the more relaxed laid back feel of La France. I wanted to savour the book but I felt so comfortable with Joy, Isabel and Felix (to name but a few in a cast of many), I raced through Sisters Making Mischief.

Maddie Please has a new fan in me. I love my trip to the continent. Her characters are loveable her writing heart warming with scenes of comic brilliance! I want to read more from this woman’s keyboard!

The story follows Joy, who’s completely over being taken for granted by her family. She was hoping for a nice, drama-free Christmas, but instead, her daughter announces a divorce, her son decides to move to New York, and everyone expects her to handle everything without a single thank-you. Fed up, she decides to escape to France to visit her sister, Isabel—and that’s when the fun begins.

I loved watching Joy’s transformation. She starts out overwhelmed and stuck but slowly begins to rediscover herself in the most charming and hilarious way. Her time in France is full of misadventures, witty banter with Isabel, and laugh-out-loud moments that made me wish I could join them. And while the title suggests the sisters are causing mischief, it’s more like they stumble into one funny situation after another.

What really stuck with me was how relatable Joy’s journey felt. It’s such a feel-good reminder that it’s never too late to make a change and put yourself first. The story had so many little nuggets of wisdom woven into all the humor and chaos—it left me smiling and even a little inspired.

If you’re in the mood for a warm, funny, and uplifting read, this one is definitely worth picking up. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more from Maddie Please!

Joy is hosting a family Christmas for the first time since her divorce, she tries to please everyone as they demand different meals to suit their latest food fad, complain, argue, and expect her to wait on them hand and foot without a word of thanks. From Christmas Eve to New Year, she manages to keep her cool, I really felt for her and wanted to shout and make a scene on her behalf.

Expecting to wave all the family off, Joy is shocked when her daughter asks to remain while divorcing her husband. Faced with hosting her unappreciative daughter and also anticipating a role as childminder, Joy's sister's invitation to join her in France offers a perfect opportunity to escape the never ending dramas.

Joy's relief (and mine) when arriving at Isabel's rustic and chaotic home was immense, there she finds somewhere where she's loved and respected, and not merely regarded as The Provider. As the days pass, her confidence returns, she rediscovers her femininity and together the sisters improve Isabel's flagging business enterprise.

The characters are fun and believable, the plot humorous, recommended reading.

Within the first few pages, it was evident that Joy was both downtrodden and taken for granted. Despite her name, all the joy was slowly being sucked out of her and by the people who should love her the most. Families can be so thoughtless.
As the synopsis explains, Joy resolves to visit her sister and see if she can recapture some of the missing spark from her life.
I wish the protagonist had a different name because there are only so many times that I can refer to the joy in this book before I appear to have a limited vocabulary. As soon as she arrives at the potato farm, her life begins again, and she falls right into step with her new circumstances.
As I have come to expect from this author, the comedy is excellent, and the supporting cast brings depth and community to the story. I particularly liked the idea of a former supermodel loaning beautiful pieces to her friends. Unfortunately, it would never apply to me, as I am not coming to the party with a suitable silhouette.
The Brocante was easy to imagine, and I could also picture the shepherd’s hut. It sounded posh, as it even sported an en suite bathroom.
Of course, being set in France, the food is a strong additional character and brings a delicious layer to the story. I wouldn’t recommend reading while hungry, as you may find yourself eating everything in sight!
This book may include details about the setting, but the story is more about the sisters' reconnection and the discovery that there is life after divorce and retirement. I loved how Joy slipped into her new reality and found the courage to take what she wanted. Sisters Making Mischief is filled with Joy in more than one way.
