Every lesson in the wild was a love lesson. Without knowing it, we were still at school, with everything new & pure, in the very heart of spring when nature's pulses were beating high & mysterious, keeping time with our own.In their hand-built, rustic cabin, their father still insisted on nightly Bible lessons but for John Muir, the primary lessons & sermons came through the flowers, ducks & fishes. Even after their mother's eventual arrival from Scotland, the boys seemed attuned to the rhythms of the land, learning to swim, avoiding venomous snakes and generally enjoying nature's beauty & bounty.
We were glorious & we were free, school cares & scolding were forgotten in the fullness of Nature's glad wellness. Everything was so novel & wonderful that we could hardly believe our senses, except when we were hungry or father was thrashing us.
