On a world torn by war, two women discover a love that defies boundaries, challenges allegiances, and that just might mean the survival—or destruction—of all they hold dear.
Roshan O’Landha, a Gantharian resistance fighter, works hard to maintain her cover as a wealthy businesswoman as war on occupied Gantharat seems imminent. When the Onotharian forces strike an overwhelming blow to the resistance, Roshan sends a plea for help to Kellen O’Dal, Protector of the Realm. In the meantime, Roshan is forced to work closely with Andreia M’Aldovar, a woman she once cared for who now holds a pivotal position in the Onotharian interim government. Andreia also guards a secret, one that if known could cost her life at the hands of either the Onotharians or the resistance. As the two women struggle to prevent annihilation, Roshan is given the only order she may not be able to obey, not even to save Gantharat—assassinate Andreia M’Aldovar.

This one did not hold as much of the charm as the first book in the series. The romance seemed very one-dimensional and wooden. At times I cringed at how awkward the dialogue came across and the way the two love interests acted around one another. The parts that featured the rebellion were fine but a little weak. I was not as affected by the political situation as I could have been. I wanted to feel why the rebels chose to risk life and limb to take back their planet rather than be told. The infiltration parts were good and definitely carried the book for me.
Not something I would recommend to my pals, but if you are looking for a sci-fi lesfic with a pretty robust world, lots of political dealings, and decent action scenes this might be something worth picking up.
Another 4.5 star rating for this series. This focused more on another protagonist couple and once again the dynamics were pretty well done. Suspense was a little less in here as compared to the predecessor but that wasn't a problem per se just my observation. Look forward to what's next.
Mixed feelings about this continuation. This book felt more chaotic and muddy than the first book in the series. It certainly feels like middle book syndrome but that's just my take on it.
I liked it enough to see it through to the end but I will admit I had a lot of "What? Why though? *toss ereader away for a sec before picking it back up and continuing to read*" moments which took away from the experience as a whole. That said, I hope the next in the series will take me to greener pastures.
Well, during the first part, I've felt like re-reading book 1 "Protector of the Realm" in a different setting. Characters are pretty much the same : - Andreia = Rae : women of power with strong daddy/mommy issues - Roshan = Kellen : strong females fighting the oppressor in a desperate way
Both hate each other, but circumstances force them to act like a couple. They quickly realize having deep feeling for one another that cannot be fulfilled, only to end madly in love after a week.
The whole story was so very predictable : Boyoda's true identity, the love story plot, the encounter of a long-lost relative, the prison uprising, Andreia final twist..
On the bright side, it's an easy reading and I like the whole prison rebel breakout story. Even if that could have been more developed.

Mixed feelings, but first half of the book is very likeable. However, in the middle, once the story switches and starts to be about the rebels, it becomes less interesting. Mainly, I think, because of weak world building.
So obvious, I saw the plot coming from a mile away - and I was extremely disappointed not to have more on the same characters from the first book. Fortunately?, I’ve read a series from this author in the past.
I loved this story! The addition of new characters while keeping our favorite old characters is a wonderful way to continue the story. I loved the plot, the writing, the characters, and everything else.
This was really great, not as great as the first one, but still great. The action was amazing and the suspense keeped me on my toes. The romance had a good scene, but it felt like it was dumb at the beginning, but it had a good susprise. The drama was great, friendships put to the test and loyalties. It was just great and I can't wait to read the next sequel.
Holy hell! Loved the different stories coming together to kick major butt. Usually I lose interest with the second book or it starts declining in quality. I loved this as much as he first book! I was rooting the whole way for them and at the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. Great work!
Started out great but dnf at 50%. Loved the action and political intrigue but the romance was slow to develop and scenes with Kellan, the heroine of a previous book, became too much of a distraction from the main story.
