Athena’s life was almost normal. And then her ex-best friend nearly killed her. Twice. He was saving her too, so it was okay, right? Well, it’s complicated. Oh, and she found a gun in her brother’s stuff. But that’s fine, he’s not in a gang, he’s just a superhero. And don’t forget the girl who can use electricity at will, the basement full of weapons, and that group of college students who have nothing better to do than save the world.
Either Athena was going crazy or everyone else was.
Now the superheroes are claiming Athena as one of their own, which, to be fair, she caused herself by spying too hard. It seems fun though. What could go wrong?

Perfect for fans of Miraculous Ladybug, Big Hero 6, and Scooby Doo, this childhood-friends-to-enemies-to-lovers series will explore darker themes with humorous additions. absolute chaos, funny but intelligent villains, slow burn, and magical realism disguised as technological errors. Don't be fooled by the tame beginning, be prepared for the intense ride ahead.
Trigger violence, bullying, brief mentions of sexual assault.

«I will willingly fall off a window.»
«I'll catch you as many times as you need.»

A big big thank you to Maria for not only sending me a copy of her book, but also mentioning me in her acknowledgments (still have no words for both..).

She is a small author so it would be really kind of you, the person who are reading this, to check out this book or even her other novel ‘You deserve Perfect’ (Which is a M/M ‘lovestory’ that deals with the struggles of an eating disorder/family/friendships/..)
To support her. Because every small bit helps, and if more people read the books=more opinions=she can improve in her writing from them even more!

Let’s get back to Electra Shocked now;

~NONSPOILER~

This book is a YA superheroes novel of Miraculous Ladybug meets Big hero 6 but not in a ‘goodbye my little akuma’ way but more in a realistic way with the ‘villain’ having a real backstory to come out like how they did.

I am a simple girl, if I can connect with the characters easily but make them have (selfmade)powers? IM SOLD.

I loved that we got both the POV of Elena and Athena, because that makes you realise that two people with a sad background can still turn different ways in the end with how it affected them when they seeked out help by certain (wrong) people.

The story had me hooked to find out who exactly Mr Dark was aswell. I did had my guess and at points I was really certain who, but then it threw me off again w someone else, and was guessing again.

The prologue you can already read for the next book made me wayyy too excited to know what happened with Ray. I am also still curious about what exactly happened between the two of them, which was definitely a big mistake.

I got so sad when her violin broke tbh… Like that whole scene made me wanna tear up :/.

~WITH SPOILERS~

As I said, for a lot of times I was so so certain about who Mr Dark was; a lot of those times were Ray, but then other times I was fr convinced it was Dylan.
I think I only figured out it wasn’t Dylan when Athena saw him under the table.

Tbh at some times I also wished it was someone completely new, because Ray did some veryyy questionable things which even almost made me wanna tearup when he pushed her against her violin and fr made her freak out with how much pressure and kinda bullying he was doing.
I do hope he get a redemption arc in a way in the next book (and omg im sooo excited bcs of the prologue of the next book, like WTF happened????!).
So I sometimes fr wished it was a completely different character, who would treat Athena so good and right.

«Did she hate seeing them happy or did she hate not being happy with them?»

Anyway a bit about Elena.
The first chapter made me connect SO MUCH to her, but not in the horrible bullying way but more in the way about how she talked about coffee/caffeine (I highlighted a lot about her before I knew she was going to be the ‘villain’)
Tbh in her eyes, the others are the villains, and I completely understand why she turned to violence and revenge. I actually felt so bad for her, but that obviously does jot condemn her actions.

«He gave her control, He gave her authori-ty, He gave her a name.
Thanks to Him, Elena was gone. Now, She was Electra.
Strong. Menacing. Powerful. Nobody would make fun of her again.
After this, the name 'Electra' would be a threat.»

Emma (hehe nametwin slay) she was such a dumb (in a funny way) and cool character and ao layed back, (and a wingman ifykyk #drivingskills)

Daisy, was funny (in a dumb way) and her power was honestly so so cool and badass. I would also love to see the progression between her and Val, bcs yes I am a hopeless romantic by heart.

Let’s jump into Val his character now.
He was also questionable to me, because sometimes I fr thought he was such a good brother and they would be having a good sibling relationship, but then he also hurted Athena in ways that I just couldn’t overlook. And I know siblings always have fights but sometimes it goes too far. With him and Ray scheming things up and also trying to stop Athena from playing her comfort violin messed a bit with my brain.
But then other times he was so kind again and when they hugged it made my heart so happy. Because I do not rlly like her mother and so on… So her having a good sibling relationship would alrdy help a lot. Same goes for her and Sara ofc.

I love how unbothered Sara is, but still doesn’t wanna mix with what’s going on because she will be made fun off💀 typical young person tbh. I don’t blame her tho lmaooo.

I don’t have lots to add anymore for Athena, only that I’m literally on her side for everything. Idc if she doesn’t wanna talk to people because she has a reason for it. I wish people would show her more love, because she so so deserves it.
Please let her be happy in the next book🙏 . I can’t see her sad anymore.
The fact she could also understand Elena so well, fr means she went through hell and back. I also think Athena has the most empathy of all characters. She doesn’t wanna hurt herself by talking with the others, but she also feels bad for them at the same time, which means a lot.

That scene on the swings at the end was probably my favourite. Swinging and having a deep talk is always good. I also liked that they didn’t end up kissing or completely making up, because it was just too early for that in their situation with what’s going on and with what happened in their past.
As I already mentioned, Ray was QUESTIONABLE, but then he also did cute and loveable things that made my heart flutter.

«She was worth it. He'd let the whole school burn to the ground, with every single student inside, if it meant saving her.»
«She asked him to leave her alone. He would respect her wish at a time when her life wasn't at risk.»

At last I would like to say one more thing to round this up.
I really liked this story, because I literally couldn’t stop reading it and fr wanted to know how it ended, but it did have a few flaws (that I tbh didn’t rlly care about), but I know Maria can improve overtime! She has proven yet again how a great writer she is, and I would literally read her grocery list.
And I can’t wait to see where she goes in life with her writing, and how she improves.

You deserve perfect by her is still my favourite tho🥲

I was able to read an ARC copy of this book and I definitely have a few thoughts about it. The story has some neat tropes like found family, friends to enemies to lovers, and lots of angst. I found that the conflict in this book was pretty compelling, but there were definitely times where I was left a little disoriented with the writing style. You kind of have to push through the first chapter or two to really understand what’s happening, which is not really ideal when the book itself isn’t that lengthy.

The author does a great job of making the main characters relatable and humorous- but I definitely feel that the writing itself has some ways to go. Overall, this was a fun, short read and I’d recommend it if you like any of the tropes mentioned.

I had the honor of receiving an ARC copy of this book, and I'll just say I'm in love with it. The characters are so intelligent and so stupid at the same time, and I couldn't get enough of the chill, friendly vibe. It gets pretty dark at places, but it's also funny. I'm not sure if I hate Ray or if I want to hold him in my arms and comfort him. Definitely recommend!
