When Rod Allbright's cousin Elspeth arrived for a visit the day after school let out for the summer, Rod thought his vacation was ruined. But after they are kidnapped to Dimension X by a monster named Smorkus Flinders, Rod realizes that Elspeth is the least of his problems. After all, what's a bratty cousin compared to cranky monsters, furious aliens, and the discovery that you are stuck in the middle of an interstellar power play?
And that doesn't begin to take into account the horrifying personal decision that Rod will be forced to make before his adventures are over.
A great read! Bruce Coville is excellent at creating exciting narratives that tingle the imagination! I purchased this at a rummage sale, and it was the only one in the series there, therefore I have started reading the series a bit out of order. I should have stopped and waited until I could at least get book one, Aliens Ate My Homework, and probably till I had the complete set so that I had more to read, but I just could not put the book down. I would not recommend reading in the order that I have, but you will be able to have a great time reading it no matter what order you read the series in. Along with how much fun I had, I also noticed the deft way Coville inserted some incredibly important life lessons simultaneously with the joyous reading experience. If you can get your hands on a Bruce Coville book, I suggest you do it, whether you are a child or an adult. You will gain a lot by reading his books no matter what age you are!
Honestly, this one is a little weaker than the first book in the series. Yes, it expands the world of the books a lot, but it's not nearly as mindbending as some of Coville's other stuff, and ultimately the entire book is about a character who ends up being a secondary antagonist at best. Much of this book feels kind of unimportant, however it does take some important steps in setting up the overarching plot.
The second and probably best book in the Rod Albright series, this book leaves Earth behind and immediately goes into other dimensions. Rod Albright is kidnapped and goes to Dimension X. Even though I always read it as “Dimension 10,” it is actually the Roman letter X, probably for the same reason why the character name BKR is pronounced “Bee Kay Are”. This is a great adventure that charmed me way more than the first book did.
Shenanigans continue and now escalate as we begin to even transcend dimensions! The whole gang is back with the addition of Elspeth. New Worlds await! This one's pretty fun if a bit of a step down from the first. Little Joel remembers enjoying the third the most so onwards and upwards! (Did you know there's a fourth? I somehow forgot! It's on Order now too.)
Too brittle for me. Boy has irritating girl cousin. Captured by aliens, they find themselves in strange and inexplicable situations. (At least the author makes it clear he has no intention of explaining.)
I absolutely loved this book when I was younger, so that likely has something to do with how high I rated it. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed this book for the most part. There were just a few aspects that felt juvenile to me, which makes sense since this book is intended for younger readers. The action is fun and the writing is silly enough to be interesting to young children. The book is paced fairly quickly which is good for the younger readers, but left me wanting a bit more in regards to the description of certain scenes.
Overall I highly suggest this book for younger readers, probably up to the middle school age range, but older readers probably won't find it nearly as interesting, and should probably read something else.
The book " I left my sneakers on Dimension X" by Katherine Coville was one of the worst books iv'e read. To call this book exiting or interesting just doesn't feel right. This book talks about how Rod and his "annoying" cousin Elspeth, get trapped in a different world called Dimension X, where aliens live and terrorize them. I would recommend this book to people who like alien stories and adventures. I don't think this book had enough detail. I would rate this book 3 stars because it's not the worse book iv'e ever read, but I didn't like it that much. Although I didn't really like this book that much, I have to admit that it does have some good parts to it.
Still fun/silly/charming, but this is very much a 'middle book' and it shows; I remember not enjoying it as much as the rest of the series when I was a kid, too. There's an adventure, of course, but it's pretty clear that the point of this book is to set up the larger conflict involving BKR and Rod's father which drives the third and fourth installments of the series.
This is the first one of Bruce's books that i read! I was in love i read the whole series and camped out at his section in the library. It has been 14 years since and I still love this series.. This help give me a true love of reading, i suggest this for any kid that loves syfy but not sure about reading.
This is the second in the Rod Allbright series. In this book a monster steals Rod and his cousin and takes them to Dimension X where they jailed. Their alien friends rescue them, but they have to get rid of this monster is wants to take over all of the dimensions and kill everyone on earth. It's a cute little book. Bruce Coville certainly has an imagination!
I think I should not read any more Bruce Coville from now on to preserve the enjoyable haze my mind formerly had around his work, until I read this awful book with dumb adjective use and a poor plot that tries to disguise that fact by introducing a new monster every other page. So.
I wish Bruce Coville would write more books about aliens. He hasn't written any since the conclusion of the I Was a Sixth Grade Alien series in 2001. I guess I'm stuck rereading the ones he has written.
I hadn't read the first one and there was no problem being filled into this installment!
The characters are near, fun and unusual. The action is plentiful and the dialogue is simplistically rational! Lots of good life lessons can be learned in this book as well!
Oh my goodness I read this when it first came out and realized that was in 1994, I feel old. Love Bruce Coville and remember this being one of the few non-R.L. Stine books that I read. Plus I thought the cover was amazingly cool, so sad to see the reprints have some crappy update.
This was the first book I read where I didn't need to read the original to understand this one; even though it's a sequel. I saw aliens, said hell yes to it, and started reading.
