Silver Bells

Rate this book
Every year, the Christmas Carousel in South Howle takes a beating, and every year, Dash Bartholomew tenderly brings it back to life.

It’s a job he started fifteen years ago, when Dash became Dasher, one of Santa’s reindeer, and accepted the worn leather harness now hanging on the hooks at the back of the carousel barn. The one with its beautiful, silver bells that once made the most wondrous sound in the world, and now lay quiet.

That is, until Merry, a young, homeless woman wanders in looking for a place out of the cold. Unlike Dash, she can hear the sweet chimes of the bells, proving to him that it’s not the harness that’s broken.

As Christmas draws near, Dash finds himself drawn to Merry and her quiet, stubborn pride. However, unable to hear the sleigh bells Dash isn’t sure what Christmas this year will bring, only that the magic in that harness is far less important than the woman he’s come to love.

Sadie Hart lives in Michigan with two dogs, though one should totally be a Moose, and they both occasionally show signs of super powers. Like the ability to fly and mind read. Okay, maybe not the flying part. That’s actually her flying pig, Pignificent. Though his super powers also include laser vision.

During the day, while not wrangling super-pooches and pigs, Sadie works as a secretary in a library trying not to read the books. At night, she writes action packed paranormal romances with a heavy dose of the things that go bump in the night – both the spooky and the naughty kind.

This is a very short and magical story! I loved the redemption theme running in it and the very unique premise. It was an unorthodox romance, to be certain, and I would have liked a bit more explanation about Merry's cough and how she came to be homeless, along with more about Dash/Eric's past, but these were just my own hopes. The story still brought a smile to my face as is, and put me a bit more in the spirit of Christmas!

I LOVED this story. It's short and wonderful. Not sappy, totally unexpected, and unique. A homeless woman wanders into a barn where a man repairs carousel animals. Things take a very unexpected direction at the end.

This book could of been so much more. I liked the idea of it but it has too many questions I want answered. I didn't even understand the meaning of this story until reading some reviews, which I felt like were better told than the story.

Silver Bells is a really short story, but even so I almost didn't finish it. It was way too blah for me and not really compelling. I didn't really see Dash and Merry falling in love and the whole ending....is just strange to me (note I will discuss the ending later so spoilers ahead). Dash keeps the carousel in working order, getting it ready every year. Merry stumbles in one day and the two work on fixing up everything together. Dash tries to help her with food and such, but Merry is very proud and doesn't want to take any help.

Eventually Dash gets Merry to stay with him over night since she has a bad cough and is quite sick and needs to be out of the cold. She stays with him, and then it is Christmas Eve so he goes out to the shed and puts on the harness with the silver bells (which he cannot hear ring anymore, but Merry can!) and turns into Dasher, Santa's reindeer. Okay. Odd. Since he doesn't need the magic of the reindeer anymore Santa gives him one wish and he wishes to make Merry better. Then Merry gets a wish also since her dad had been a reindeer, but he died before getting his wish. She then asks to stay with Dash forever! Love! Just not good. It was so strange and I didn't see the connection at all and it was just not good. Really it is only 24 pages, but that was too long for me.

On the one hand I really liked the (eventually revealed) premise here. Santa takes in deserving, but wayward boys on the naughty list and has them pull his sleigh as one of his reindeer until they find the goodness he knows they have inside.

That's pretty gods' damned awesome as a premise.

On the other this wasn't REALLY a romance persay. It has about a guy trying to make right a checkered past, a mysterious woman who stumbles into his life and...secrets.

We learn a bit about Dash's personal history - rough details but details we're not given about Merry. They don't talk much and when they do it's so mired down by Dash's "secret" that it hardly makes sense.

While I understood why Dash made the choice he did (using his Christmas Wish from Santa to cure Merry of what I'd lay odds was consumption) I have no idea why Merry made her choice. We're told of the little moments the two shared, but we never FELT them as part of the story so they didn't have a solid weight.

This was a very sweet story. The end was unexpected and made me smile with realization. I enjoyed it a lot. It is a story more than a book but it was a very sweet read.

It is obvious that Sadie Hart is an excellent writer. She can string together ideas and words-and do it beautifully.

This book contains 2 short stories. The first one felt a bit like a character study- a short one. The character of Dash is sad and slightly jaded. The homeless waif turns out to be someone old enough to be involved with an older man-who turns out to be not as old as he is portrayed to be. WAIT!! My head hurts!! Huh?

This story is not so much a story as it is a series of doodles on the back of an envelope. It’s as unsatisfying as a bowl of rice crispies when you are craving a steak. I hope I didn’t pay money for this.

The second story is just rather strange and disjointed- and just ended. No middle-it starts off and just ends.

Disappointing. Ms. Hart- go back to your story board and flesh out your characters and fill in the blanks or at least color in with some details. You obviously can write- you obviously have some dysfunctional and dynamic characters running around in your brain. You know what world you are in- bring us into that world instead your head. Seems like a curiously interesting place to visit.

This short little story was a take on how Santa’s reindeer are commandeered. This one was about Dash or Dasher and how he finally found what he was needing after a woman came upon him fixing carousel figures for the next spring. Merry is on her own adventure to figure out why the bells do what they do and she finds Dasher and her heart in the process. Their little love story is a comforting way of seeing how two people who were lost can always find something that they really care about.

This was an interesting story. It was short enough that I think the book 'blurb' almost gave away too much of the plot, though at least the ending wasn't spoiled in the blurb.
I feel like the author could have done more 'showing' instead of 'telling', but all in all, it was an interesting little story.

This short story seemed more like a c0ncept for a story rather then a complete story. It was the bones of what could have been a very good Christmas story but there was not enough meat to actually get you involved with the characters. It made large leaps without detail. I think it could have been much better.

Silver Bells is a magical Christmas story where a man repairs carasol horses every year and has a set of Silver Bells that do not work. A woman comes to his work barn on a cold winter night and he gives her shelter. They find the magic together and a happy ever after life. How the magic works is the most important point of this short story. Loved it.

Very cute

A short, simple story that is super cute. A different spin to Santa's reindeer. The characters are cute and the plot is endearing.

I spotted this while browsing for some Christmas reads. It’s a short story, didn’t take long at all to read it.

I wish it had been longer, as I fell in love with the characters and the whole story was just so ingenious. A new one on me.

Dash works on the old carousel in the South side of Howle. Not the nicer side of the town. He lovingly sands them and removes the graffiti the town kids paint on the animals, restoring them to their former glory for another year.

George, the night watchman, stops in for his daily chat, motioning to the harness and bells hanging quietly. He tells Dash, not for the first time, to get rid of them as the bells are broken, but Dash just shrugs. He could never part with them.

…..Dash knew the sound of those bells. The pure, beautiful chimes that stroked down his back with all the caress of a lover. They were silent now, but they hadn’t always been.

One afternoon, while working on one of the animals the door to his repair barn opens. Turning to see who has entered, he discovers a young woman. She looks down on her luck in her tattered clothes and exposed, reddened hands. It’s really cold outside and Dash sees no harm in letting her stay awhile.

Not wanting to frighten her, Dash turns back to his sanding. He hears a small voice behind him,

“So, what’s your name?”

and a friendship begins with Merry.

When it’s time to call it quits for the night, Dash tells Merry she’s welcome to stay in the barn. When he arrives the next morning, he discovers Merry gentle sanding a reindeer. She seems very adept at it. They sit quietly, working through the day and this becomes the norm.

Noticing that Merry’s cough is getting worse, he persuades her to stay at his house, in the spare room. Their friendship has started to become something else, something more. But Dash has a secret, one he can’t tell Merry about.

The secret is in the bells. Why are they broken? Why can’t he hear their sweet sound anymore? There is only one way to get answers, and he’s getting them tonight.

Silver Bells is a sweet, romantic Christmas story.

There is a great surprise when you finally learn about the harness and its bells. The author came up with something so original and so cool. I loved the whole idea.

I gave Silver Bells Four Stars because it left me all warm and smiley inside and I loved the whole idea!

This review was originally published on Melissa's Midnight Musings on December 19, 2012.

This story is very short and sweet. We meet Dash, a seemingly lonely park caretaker who lovingly restores carousel animals by night. One night, Merry, stumbles in to the barn where he's working looking for somewhere out of the cold to stay. Dash lets her stay and tries to help her, but she's too proud, and demands to work. So they each work together on the animals, and over time a bond develops between them and they begin to care for each other.

Since the story is so short, we don't really get to see the full development of this, but what we do get to see is nicely done. There's also a bit of magic as Dash and Merry both meet "Nicholas" and he grants them each one wish. There's a cute little twist in this that Dash is one of Santa's reindeer, and Merry's father used to be before that. I'd never really thought of a twist like this before, the reindeer being normal people, and only having a limited time to be the reindeer, not hearing the call of their harness bells after they don't need them anymore. I suppose it's the same way with the tradition of Santa. After a certain point in our childhood, we're let in on the secret that he isn't real, so this runs along similar lines.

A short, sweet, holiday read.

My Review: I love this story, it has such an interesting concept and story. You kind of know where it is going from the start but you don't know the significance of the silent bells. I really enjoyed Dash and his quiet way that really helped break through Merry's fear and walls. The only thing that could make this story better would be more! I want so much more of this story, I want to know about all the others from the past and current!

This was a sweet story with an interesting take on Santa and who and what his reindeer are. It was hard for me to get into the story which was not very short. The character were just dropped in without any real introduction as to who they were. It was hard to have any feeling for either of the characters even though you knew you should because this was going to be a sentimental tale. Once you get past the rather lackluster beginning the story moves a lot more quickly.

Dash Bartholomew lives and works on the south side of Howle, a less than desirable area. He keeps the carousel animals looking good for the summer season through the winter. He has a harness with silver bells attached that he can no longer hear. Merry is a homeless woman who ducks into the barn he works in to get out of the cold and wind. She is a proud woman who will not accept charity but is willing to work and help Dash with the animals. She can hear the bells and finds the sound sweet and comforting because she heard similar ones when she was a child. These two people have more in common than they know.

There were a lot of short cuts taken, I have no idea when they were supposed to have fallen in love because there was nothing to indicate it had happened. Like I said, a sweet story but not very filling.

This was a remarkably clever story. I really liked what it was about. I thought it was unique and far far too short.
This was a pretty chaste short story. I don't believe there was even a kiss in this. The romance was not the whole focus.

According to Goodreads it's only 24 pages long and there's a lot to not give away! I did feel we were arriving a little in the middle of the story though. It's set 15 years after the start of Dash's story. While that might not be the sensible place to start, it would have been nice to see some sort of start. Also, Merry's conclusion was a little odd. Will she be back next year?!

Apart from the short and the confusion, I really liked this story idea. I don't think I've ever read anything like this before. I wish it was a series of 9 books...

I feel badly I am giving this story 1 star. 1.5 stars is a more accurate rating from me on Goodreads rating system. I tried to love it, but I feel there was a lot missing in the story. I would have loved the story to be more developed, to feel smooth in the transitional parts of the story. Instead I left feeling like I had been on a disjointed and bumpy ride. I *did* very much enjoy some of the descriptions of what the characters were doing. When I read about Dash restoring the animal pieces, it made me want to feel the sawdust, smell the scent of when one sands an object. It made me feel a bit nostalgic and wish I was in a wood shop. A very nice job in several of the descriptions, but it wasn't enough to make up for what I feel is missing in the story.

A beautiful Christmas short story. It is about a man named Dash, a carousel worker who is doing his yearly maintenance. on faded, chipping, and graffitied carousel animals. In his workshop, he has a harness of silver bells that no one can hear. Then, one night a woman named Mary wanders into his workshop to get away from the cold. This will change his live as well as hers. And it all revolves around the silent silver bells.

A beautiful surprise surrounds the silver bells. It takes a new approach to Santa Claus. A wonderful short story I recommend everyone to read to better appreciate the Christmas spirit.

This was a cute little Christmas romance with a nice twist including select chosen people who transform into reindeer each Christmas. Overall the story was well written but too short for my taste. It begins by introducing the main characters and how they came to be. The story jumped several times to future events without closing out the previous ones and this left me feeling like something was missing. I guess because it is such a short read the author was satisfied but I would have liked more.

While I would have enjoyed a more thorough build of the story I enjoyed it and would recommend the it for a quick read to get you into the Christmas spirit.

This is the story of Dash, an honest, hard working man. every year for the last 15, he has maintained the carousel in his hometown. one year a down on her luck woman shows up looking for somewhere warm to rest her sick body. she helps to sand the graffiti off the carousel pieces with Dash and in return for her hard work, he takes her home and cares for her. there is one slightly different thing about Dash though. on Christmas Eve he dons the harness from the reindeer on the carousel and becomes Dasher, one of the fabled reindeer of Santa. This is a marvelous story with an adorable ending. I definitely recommend this short read!!

This book is a very different short story than I have ever read before and it's a very Christmassy story.

Silver Bells is the story of Dash who till yesterday could hear the music of silver bells but cannot hear them from today. This leaves him be a shell of a man, working alone waiting for Christmas. In comes the sick girl into his workstation who apparently hears the music of the bells. So what happens next? Whats their story? and will they get their happy ending? Well most important yet, Who is that girl?

This story is rather different and sweet. I didn't guess where the ending was going and where I actually loved the characters. It just pulls you in and leaves you sappy happy.

Sweet little novella that is a quick, enjoyable read... just don't look too deeply for plot explanations because there are none.

Dash takes care of the Christmas carousel and is also one of Santa's reindeer - Dasher to be precise- when he puts on a harness and transforms... sort of like a were-reindeer. I guess. Anyway, he can't hear the bells on the harness which seems to be a very tragic thing for him but it all ends up fine because he meets a very nice homeless girl whose father was Rudolph.

Yes, I know how it sounds but it's still rather sweet. Just go with it.

So I had just finished an ebook I was suppose to review and was bummed because it really wasn't good. I didn't want to go to bed yet although it was extremely late so instead I went on to the Kindle store and looked at the free books that popped up. I was so glad when I found Silver Bells because it was just what I was looking for, a short Christmas themed story with a little bit of love thrown in too.

I had no idea what this story was about when I started, and I was really skeptical as to whether I would like it when I read the bit about the guy being Santa's reindeer, but as the story progressed I got into it a bit. I liked Dash/Erik and Merry, and I liked the story that was told between the two of them. When I got to the end I found I had enjoyed the story. It wasn't perfect-- it was a little cheesy-- but it was cute and a nice fun, fast read.

Ehh, it was free and a short story so I figured why not? I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting, but this was overall an odd short story. It did feel a little bland and I was more interested in the characters fixing up the carousel. The connection between the two people never felt there, especially given the HEA nature. I would have liked a bit more backstory on the magic than what was there. Not something I would read again or recommend.

While this plot was creative, it was a little weird to me. It's more of a supernatural (some would say "magical") tale. It's not really my thing but a lot of other people liked the book so if you like "magical", give it a try. The writing was good and the content was clean. I'll give 3 stars just for that.
