This must-have set for all lovers of Broadway includes a 176-page lavishly illustrated hardcover book about the colorful history of the Broadway musical from its nineteenth-century roots to today; more than 150 full-color and black-and-white photographs of the most famous performers and productions; three full-length digitally remastered CDs with 60 of the greatest musical numbers every recorded, representing every generation of the musical; and a 32-page booklet containing commentary covering in detail every track on the compact discs, including notes on the score, book, and lyrics.
A fun read, with great photos of each musical - a lovely, large coffee table book. Sennett selects a handful of shows from each major Broadway "era" (as defined by him) and explores their inspiration, creation, content, and legacy. He's not afraid to share his opinions on the quality of books and scores, but shares space with quotations taken from major critics to give a balanced review of each musical. Better to browse than read straight through, and some readers may wish for more depth.
