Gabriel Maguire thought he'd buried his past until the night he met Holly, only to lose the woman he cared about, again.
Holly Jacobs has always put the cart before the horse. A prodigy who shot to stardom in textile design, she never knew a normal life—and there's nothing she longs for more than to be normal.
Pregnant before she even knows the name of her baby's father, Holly has put the cart miles ahead of the horse this time. But when she and Gabe meet for the second time, they decide to have their baby together. Holly finally begins to accept her unique way of doing everything backward, but Gabe's very normality drives her up the walls. Then his tragic past rears up; pain and loss threaten to destroy forever the fragile bond that has blossomed between him and Holly.
Sometimes the only way to get where you need to be is to put the cart before the horse.
Bestselling Author Bernadette Marie writes contemporary romances and believes in Happily Ever After. The married mother of five believes in love at first sight, quick love, and second chances. An avid martial artist, Bernadette Marie is a certified instructor and holds a second degree black belt in Tang Soo Do. She loves Tai Chi, traveling to Disney parks, and having lunch with friends. When not writing, or running her own publishing house, Bernadette is probably immersed in a Rom Com, from which she will often quote one liners.
What can I say? I didn't really enjoy it. Sorry, Ms. Bernadette Marie, no offense. But I guess this time, this story is not for me.
I felt that there were too many events and emotions put in at the same time. There were moments when I was like, "Whoa, where did this come from?" (Not in a good way). There were also some inconsistencies. At first, the wedding dress was at the lead character's mom's place. On the next chapter, it was at the shop! Tsktsk. It may seem minor, but I still noticed.
I did finish it though. But I didn't read through the whole thing anymore. Too hard.
Her other books seem pretty interesting (if not popular).
I really enjoyed this read the first time through in 2014. Yesterday evening I decided to reread it since it was at the beginning of my reading addiction when I first read it..my opinions on books have changed over the last four years.
Revised Review 09/20/18
Holly, is a thirty-year-old prodigy who works hard and has no time or energy for a social life. Her co-workers convince her to go along with them for a night on the town and live a little. Live a little she certainly did in the arms of a stranger. Now she's pregnant and needs to find the man who fathered her child even though she doesn't know his name. She snuck out the morning after because of embarrassment (and the worry of what her mother would think if she knew) and they didn't exchange last names or phone numbers. She didn't date, have boyfriends or one-night stands. To be blunt, she was prudish and messed up because of her mother's treatment of her. She lived her life doing whatever she thought would please her mother...but nothing would.
Since she was extremely intelligent and in college at fifteen years of age her mother stuggled with the attention her daughter received and would do whatever it took to steal that attention away. I thought she was pretty awful but it was in a subtle way, like the put downs that were said low enough that only Holly heard. Holly's wants and needs were pushed to the side and she was definitely second place. But, she was young and naive and hadn't figured it out altogether. She just knew her mother was not nurturing and she disliked her deeply. In her mother's eyes Holly did nothing - absolutely nothing - right...don't forget she was brilliant and excelled at just about everything. But she picked on her relentlessly.
Now our Hero/sometimes zero, Gabe. I didn't like him. He's a widower who owns a restaurant/bar. He is a lonely man since the death of his young wife and has not let himself become involved with anyone since she passed. He lives in the past with his dead wife in his head. He keeps a picture of her beside his recliner and talks to her all the time. The way he went on about his dead wife got to be quite sickening. Every year on the anniversary of her death he got wasted and the heroine found him one evening on the floor of his room crying over the wife's picture. It gets worse. It is clear that the dead wife is number one...no doubt about it. Holly came in trailing in at second place.
When they both flew to his parents' home out of state so they could meet, he actually took her to the cemetary to introduce his dead wife to her and his unborn child. He then kisses his fingers and touches the angel on the tombstone. It has been six years...six years and he still is so torn up like the accident just happened. Then at the very end something happens and it was so uncalled for.
Not only was he a thoughtless toad but he left her out of life decisions. They were engaged and he just goes out and buys a house without any input from her. One of his employees knew he was going house hunting and told him to be sure he included Holly and if he purchased it without her she would be very hurt and upset. He does it anyway. He tells Holly that he's going to take her ring shopping and never does. Just turns up at the wedding with a big gaudy ring. He was always saying things he would do with her and then ended up doing them alone. He just about ruined their relationship by buying that house but she gave in! That irritated me to no end. If people don't suffer consequences when they mess up...what's the use. How will they ever learn??!! They just figure they'll get their way and they continue in that vein. Everything had to be his way. She would put up a fight but he always won. Even his employees told him that and warned him it would wreck his relationship with her...but he does what he wants.
To say I was disappointed in the characters in this book is putting it mildly. I have to be honest and tell you the story seemed to move very slowly and there was a lot of repetition. I certainly won't read it again!!
Have you ever come across a book that you started reading and just couldn’t manage to put down? … Wanted to zip through the book like a speed-reader, but didn’t want the story to end? That’s exactly what happened for me with Cart Before the Horse by Bernadette Marie. I’ve definitely found a new (to me) author whose books will be on auto-buy status. Her writing style is beautiful; a true pleasure to read. Her characters are well-developed, very relatable, funny and compassionate. I could go on and on, but am more anxious for you to pick up this story and dive in like I did.
Prodigal Holly is a no-nonsense, talented, professional woman working as a textile designer who ends up pregnant after a one night stand with Gabriel Maguire. Two months go by without seeing him until she seeks him out to plop this bit of news on his lap. Gabe’s character was oftentimes heart melting. His past trauma could cause him to react either way (accepting/denying) in response to Holly’s news of being pregnant. While his reaction may seem to good to be true, I was looking for a sweet romance and got exactly what I wanted out of this story. I enjoyed seeing them develop throughout the story, overcoming their individual fears and hang-ups.
Bernadette Marie definitely accomplished writing a feel-good romance with an HEA, which I thoroughly enjoyed and hope you will too. I found her writing style to be very clear with an easy to follow rhythm and engaging dialogue.

An ok story. I think I’m being generous with the stars. Straight laced Holly was a child prodigy who struggled to fit in and always seem to do everything backwards. At the age of 30 after having her first drunken one night stand she finds out she is pregnant. After tracking down the father Gabe, she struggles with control after he wants to be involved then proposes, tells her he loves her and she ends up living with him in quick succession. Gabe was widowed and insecure Holly can’t believe he can love her when he chose his last wife and she believes he is only with her because of the baby. It got a bit repetitive with the insecurity, not wanting to give up any control and bursting into tears all the time.
I'm sorry I just couldn't get into this - it was typical fluffy chick lit, but the characters got on my nerves.. HE was moody - too nice and then too angry - his mood swings seemed kind of unnecessary. SHE was too mechanical - focused on career, but I didn't ever feel warmth from her - I'm not sure how these characters 'fell in love'.
The Cart Before The Horse is a beautiful story about life. Sometimes life doesn’t always turn out like we think it should, and definitely not the way we always plan. This is a story that makes you fall in love with its characters. You’ll find yourself wrapped up in the lives of Holly and Gabe, rooting for love to conquer all! This story takes you through both of them learning to love for the first time, and learning to love again. Bernadette pulls you into the story, you won’t want to put it down!
I wanted to like this... It sounded great but Holly was such a whiny arsed Debbie Downer it killed almost all enjoyment in this book. And that whole bit with the ethereal dead wife pep talks... nah. Not my cup of tea... But I felt that Gabe saved this from getting one star or less... He wasnt perfect and thats fine but he was sure dang close!
I love when I feel a character's passion--and pain. Though it seems the title gives away the plot of the story, it really doesn't. The author still managed to reveal surprises throughout the entire novel. The characters were likeable, even when I felt like yelling at them, as I usually do when I want them to get their act together. Always a good sign when an author has me fussing at her protagonists. There were several powerful and emotional scenes that had me cooing, crying, and hoping. Definitely worth the read, and I will absolutely be looking for more from Bernadette Marie.
This was a light hearted, fluffy read to occupy a sunny afternoon in the garden.
Basically, everything in the MC's life is perfectly lovely - no money troubles, successful, job she loves, man she loves, man has a job that he loves, etc, etc.
However, MC finds ways to constantly worry, freak out or get anxious about everything. To say she has a chip on her shoulder where her mother is involved is an understatement.
So other than a complete inability to appreciate how lucky she is, the story was fine.
A nice, easy read full of emotions. This is a nice length and would make a great beach read, something that lets your mind relax and you don't have to think hard to enjoy it. The characters are sweet and shows that the love of two people can triumph over heartache in the end. Made my eyes quite watery at some points but also makes you smile too.
Truly liked the characters, especially Gabriel, although I occasionally found myself irked with Holly. The lost first love idea is generally overdone, but it worked okay here. Bit of a last minute twist at the end. Good writing overall. I recommend this book.
Denver Bride Series, Bk 1, EBK-M, Kindle, @ 10/2011, Read 8/13/2025, Fiction, Romance. A successful textile designer , who has been told her whole life that she puts the cart before the horse, that she does everything backwards, and not the "normal" way, discovers 2 months after the fact, that she is pregnant after her first and only one night stand. She decides she'll keep the baby on her own, even though it messes up her career and her life plan, but that she must find out more about the baby's father, including his name so that the baby will know his father's background. After meeting the 2nd time, Gabe insists they raise the child together, at least as friends. Holly is hesitant and doubtful, but Gabe is persuasive. The story is quite unbelievable for me, but people who enjoy romances will probably enjoy it! 2☆'s = Okay. Just not my style!
Holly always did things out of order. She finds herself pregnant before she even knows who the father is. When Holly finds Gabriel and he knows he's going to be a father he excited. But can Holly commit to him?
This book didn’t really do it for me. Holly created for drama. She was not a like-able character. It’s was definitely an inst-love book but I felt as if it did not have any substance. I would not recommend.
I enjoyed this book. I felt that it was a good read. It wasn't a book I would consider fantastic our riveting but moves with enough speed to keep you interested.
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA
Wow, this book just was probably the sweetest book. The characters were so well developed and the story was just so complete that I don't feel their was anything missing. This story was one that moved me to tears many times over. I found myself feeling what not only our female lead but our male lead was going through. This book pulled me in and I didn't want it to end when it did, but only because I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Holly and Gabe.
Holly finds out that on her thirtieth birthday she came home with a present she hadn't planned on. This book explores how can you feel you have lost all control in your life over one night of passion, then maybe along the way find yourself and who you were truly meant to be. Gabe gives Holly problems along every step of the way and literally turns her upside down, but can Holly truly believe him or is he just saying what their family wants to hear out of duty? This book will require a hanky or two. Very well written book.
Free Ebook. Technically a 2.5 I'd say but always vote up with a .5
Overall this is a "cute" book. The story idea is cute, the characters are cute. The story is too tidy and easy but that isn't what you are looking for in these kind of books. Typically I'd say this was a 3, but I felt like the spring portion of the book was rushed. I think flushing out more how they got used to would have been interesting and build the story more. Even more, the whole was way too rushed for something as dramatic as that. I feel like given the complexity of their situation and Gabe's past history, these events should have had way more importance and how Holly handled them warranted more detail and time. I almost feel like the author may have gotten bored towards the end and just rushed through.
Honestly I got this book because of the title. I had been immersed in Non-fiction for way too long and just wanted something light. I don't do romance novels but I loved the cover. Holly has been putting the cart before the horse her entire life. A prodigy who did everything before most people, graduating from college before most start, having a successful career in the fashion/textile world, she had the perfect car, job, and home. The good girl who never did anything outside the lines. Until her friend, Tracy, gets her to come out for a birthday night. Eight weeks later and Holly is hanging over the toilet with a Pregnancy test dangling from her fingers. What did she do and more importantly who did she do it with? Enter Gabe. Exactly the opposite of Holly, but with his own pain to live with. That's all I'm going to tell you because I want you to be as surprised as I was. Oh, my Bernadette, you may have pulled me into Romance!

Holly Jacobs, was different and had been made to feel different since childhood. She excelled in school, graduated at fifteen and completed a double major in college by age nineteen. At thirty she found herself pregnant from a one-night of drinking on her birthday and going to a hotel with a man. Because she did things out of order, Cart Before the Horse, she was upset because she could not remember the man or his name. This set the background for the story, until she finds Gabe, the father of her baby.
Cart Before the Horse is a nice love story that deals with a situation of an unexpected pregnancy, the death of Gabe's first wife and the relationship between adult children and parents. It becomes a light fun romance on one level while at another it deals with serious relationship issues and emotions.
Bernadette Marie does emotional stories so well. Her "Second Chance" is my fave of all her books, but this is a very close second.
Gabe and Holly each have dealt with turmoil in their pasts. Despite serious misgivings, Holly takes a chance on romance and love with Gabe. Their relationship unfolds letting both of them heal together while changing for the positive.
I really loved this couple and their journey from virtual strangers to happily ever after. Gabe's family was also delightful and really added to the feel of this book. If you love sweet, emotional romances, don't miss this one. Great read!
