Beggar maid... Jaspar Challinor, Marquis of Lensborough, was appalled! Who was this redheaded, badly dressed waif in his aristocratic host's dining room? And why in the world was the proud Marquis so drawn to her? Wealthy lady! Lord Lensborough was a man well used to getting exactly what he wanted - and he wanted Hester! Convinced that she was a poor relation, the noble lord was about to receive the shock of his life...from a lady who would break all his very proper rules!
I've been published by Mills & Boon since 2007..but I'd been making up stories in my head for as long as I can remember. It was a long walk home from school, and there were no ipods in those days to keep you amused! When I wasn't daydreaming, I had my nose stuck in a book. My parents used to take me to the library every Saturday, until I was old enough to get there on my own, and my house was always full of books.
During school holidays, the whole family loved to visit stately homes and castles. As soon as we got home, my older sister and I would either dress up as lords and ladies, and romp around the garden, or, if it was raining, retreat to our bedroom where we would draw intricately detailed plans of our very own imaginary stately home, complete with secret tunnels, dungeons, and usually, a maze in the extensive grounds.
When I was old enough to go to university, I studied English literature, with Philosophy. I was not sure what I wanted to do after that, but meeting a handsome student of maths, who was the owner of a very powerful motorbike helped me make up my mind. Reader, I married him.
For many years I felt it was important to stay at home to raise our two children, but one day, when the youngest had gone to senior school, I began to wonder if all those stories I made up to occupy my mind whilst attending to mundane chores, would interest anyone else.
I started to write some of them down, and eventually decided that one of them was "deep" enough to merit attention from publishers. It took me almost two years to complete, mainly because I kept tearing it up and starting all over again. And having to keep going out to work to help pay for school fees, then university tuition, slowed progress down as well.
Needless to say, this masterpiece was rejected by every single publisher I sent it to, but by this time, writing had become an addiction.
Four more stories got rejected, before Mills & Boon bought "His Cinderella Bride", a regency romance.
I do have some other interests, besides writing! I love spending time pottering in my garden. And recently I've taken up ballroom dancing as a way to try and keep fit (and keep the romance alive in my marriage!)
Marquesses mother arranges for him to go to house party, so he can pick one of his mother friends daughters for his wife. But he likes their cousin. Who is not happy to be near men.
Annie Burrows’ debut historical novel for Harlequin Mills & Boon is a lusty and enthralling tale of love and life in Regency England. The hero of His Cinderella Bride is a wealthy aristocrat on the look-out for a wife – and, in shades of Jane Eyre, he meets her in a country lane in inclement weather, although I don’t remember a scene where Jane fell into a ditch full of muddy water!
After this inauspicious opening, we meet the book’s heroine, Hester, a similarly wealthy woman who hides under the disguise of a poor servant. Soon enough Annie Burrows transports us into a world of mistaken identities, evil, would-be rapists, illegitimate gypsy children, carriage rides, tavern brawls and London society. It’s all utterly charming and engaging, and the author’s conjuring up of an early 19th century atmosphere is very well done.
The book’s strength lies in the characterisation of the hero and heroine. Annie Burrows wisely keeps the focus on these two characters throughout and there’s never any unnecessary diversion to take away from the central romance plot. The dialogue is rich and full of passion and the romantic scenes are understated and heart-warming, everything you could wish from a category romance.
His Cinderella Bride is a brilliant piece of writing and a story I enjoyed and identified with from beginning to end. Annie Burrows is an accomplished writer and I look forward to seeing more of her work on the strength of this book.
\i always love a good romance, especially when it comes off the back of some seriously heavy duty fantasy reading! This is a charming story that shows that some things are simply not as they seem, though others are! A charming love tale with barriers and pitfalls and misunderstandings all the way through, this is a definite for anyone who has a romantic bone!!
This was a familiar trope of the dominating rich marquis Jasper seeking a suitable bride. The heroine Hester is the Cinderella of the story. I would have enjoyed this story much more if there were not so many misunderstandings in the second half of the story. Nothing was as it seemed and the main characters were very interesting.
Usually I don't like books where the entire premise is buildt on miscommunication, but here it actually works! The reasons are plausible, and although the story became a bit OTT it was still pretty fun. Very run-of-the-mill all in all though.
Trigger warning: attempted rape of child talked about in flashbacks. I did not like Jasper till the end; he was such a grouch, and didn't really know what he wanted to be. Hester was much put upon but proved indomitable. I was glad she got her HEA. It was also steamy in the last quarter of the book. We meet Captain Fawley, who eventually get his own book. I liked him better in this one.
This is a usual cliche of love stories but it is still well told.
Jasper Challinor, Lord Lensborough has come to The Holme to find a wife. On his way in he nearly runs down a women who is dressed rather shabbily.
He finds out that Hester is the niece of the man he has come to meet. He thinks she treated as a servant. All the way through the book they misinterpret each others feelings for each other.
Hester hated him before he arrived and after he nearly ran her down and did not apologise she does not like him at all.
She has a secret that I really looked forward to finding the truth about and she had a past that led her to be shy and men.
Jasper falls in love with her agianst his wishes.
I found the story enjoyable and well writter for the most part.
I liked the heroine and her background. All the misconceptions were a bit irritating. They made it again and again even with previous assumptions not turning out to be true. Oh well, I did enjoy reading it so ots all good to me.
Good read. Hero goes courting because he has to have a wife in order to get an heir and figures one girl is as good as another. Then he meets the poor relation, and she is nothing like he thought he wanted. It's a cute story and I liked it a lot. .
{from my text review file}His Cindrella Bride: Nice story line about the h. H not so great. Constantly thinking about either keeping OW or making h OW while marrying her cousin.
