I read the first 4 chapters of this book in under an hour... while I was supposed to be promoting my own work at an event. It's just that good! If you're a fan of vampire movies (and I'm a total nerd for them), you're going to love this as much as I do. The writing is crisp and witty, drawing on Conrad's own humor, playing with a variety of vampire movie tropes, and planting easter eggs for nerds like me. The characters are just as fun and quirky as their names suggest -- Mad Maggie, Big Benjamin, Overboard George -- but this doesn't sideline the seriousness of topics like homelessness, substance abuse, and addiction that are simultaneously being tackled in this novel. The mix of comedy and kindness is one I'd like to see more often. I can't wait to read the next book!
This is a 4.5 half star rating to be honest, and that's because it gets a little slow in the middle, which makes the ending feel rushed. I've seen the same issue in best sellers, so I'm rounding up to 5 stars because I had the good fortune of meeting Conrad, and he's a delightful and gracious author.
This book is more than a vampire horror story. It's a dive into the life of the homeless and drug addicts. It makes you reconsider the value of these people on the fringe of society, their humanity and their intelligence despite their situations. Conrad weaves his fictional, at times brutally graphic, world with the very real horrors of life on the streets. It was hard to decide which was more creepy to read about. Well written, and I'm not usually a horror reader.
Such a fun book to read! I loved the characters and their quirky personalities. The author's unique approach to the storyline had me hooked and I could not put the book down! There is a perfect mixture of horror and humor. I look forward to reading the rest of the series and seeing how the adventure unfolds.
