Marita Golden’s book is an absolute must read for any writer but for the Black writer it is grandmamas best soul food dish washed down with purified water. This book made me laugh, cry, smile, reflect, and start writing again. I found this book on my first visit to the Politics and Prose bookstore while in DC interviewing for a job. My life was in a major transition and this book helped me to know I was making the right move. It took so long to read it because it was so personal to me I needed time off from work to focus. Included in the Appendix is a guide to resources for Black authors. I have already joined one writers group because of this book and plan to join more! Get it-read it and then write it!

I loved this book! A personable how-to, for my first encounter with Golden this was a beautiful introduction to who she is and what she’s done for the world in terms of writing and creating space for those to follow her.
