After an ill-timed heartbreak, Craig Swagger takes, what he thought would be a directionless drive. Instead, he finds himself broken down in the small town of Lakeside, Oregon with no vehicle, no place to go, and an evaporating bank account.
By necessity, or fate, Craig runs into the owner of The Chariot, a local bed and breakfast. Jasmine O’Hara, a modest, single-mother, seems to resent unsolicited, unregistered, visitors, and only begrudgingly agrees to rent Craig a room for an extended time period in exchange for basic assistance with repairs and maintenance.
In this down-to-earth tourist town, Craig encounters a quirky and entertaining collection of people that he discovers embodies the meaning of community like he’s never experienced before. It’s the rising affection for Jasmine, and an unlikely friendship, that convinces Craig that he might have found where he belongs. But when the winds of his past blow in and an unpredicted storm threatens to take everything that he’s come to love, Craig has to find peace with the one thing he’s never believed in before—forever.

Hi readers!
As an author, there is nothing I find more exhilarating than encountering those remarkable moments when what I thought was “my story “develops, much like a child, and becomes a story of its own. Boldly tugging me along, luring me to chase after startling discoveries and uncovering rightful identities of yearning characters.
As a person, there is nothing I find more exhilarating than living in the actual moment and experiencing life all around and within me. I believe a good author knows how to write, but a great storyteller knows how to live. _____________________________________________
Chancing Hope (Romantic Suspense) - Book Review Published June 2018
"This author is a MAGNIFICENTLY gifted story teller! This book was hard to put down and so I didn't! I used all of my spare time to immerse myself in the story and that was simply done because of the way this author used her flair with words to pull me in! I loved the symbolism with the animals and the people. It was not lost on me. The book is filled with descriptions of characters that were so real that I imagine I knew them. And believe me...the antagonist is not someone I WANT to know...AT ALL! The story is compelling and I actually found myself scooching to the edge of my seat more than once as I read on and on. At LEAST I didn't scream at the characters, out loud that is. I do wonder if there will be a sequel or even a movie script for this book. I'll follow her story telling career to find out!"

"BEAUTIFUL The way this author has written these characters makes you feel like you are experiencing exactly what they are going through. I felt their sorrow and pain and cried right along with them. I never really knew how much it took to manage a ranch or the heartaches it could have but this book shows you just how hard and rewarding it is. This book also shows you about following your dreams, unconditional love, and what a family should be. I will always think of this story and smile when I see an eagle. Thank you for such a beautiful story."
Review by JR _____________________________________________ For The Garden (Thriller / Mystery) NEW RELEASE Published May 2020
Years ago, the unimaginable murder of eleven-year-old Samuella Rose left Sarina Rose, her twin sister, in a downward spiral and plagued by nightmares. Fifteen years later - the case still wide open - the only way she has managed to keep her head above water is due to her attractive massage therapist, Duane Whitson, who she battles to keep at a distance, and Clyde Small, the detective who has never given up on combing every lead in search for justice. However, it’s her unlikely roommate, Becky Bracken, that introduces her to dream interpretation. But that’s not where the interpretation stops.
A cold shiver covered Becky’s arms and legs with goosebumps. This was beyond superstition or hoaxes. This was actually happening. Graver still, she suspected, Sarina had no idea.
Had me captured from the beginning and I had to keep telling myself to breathe at the end. I lived in Lakeside for years so I had my own visions of streets and paths and fishing holes that I was imaging throughout the book. Another excellent book. Thank you Lisa.🙂
After his soon-to-be fiancé ruthlessly breaks his heart, Craig Swagger feels the only choice is to leave his life in California behind—nothing is left for him besides a dead-end job and reminders of Vanessa. With only the clothing on his back and the keys to his Mustang, the crestfallen man takes to the open road and drives north, seeing where fate will take him. Unfortunately, fate has him stranded in Lakeside, desperately needing a mechanic. Repairs could take days, and Craig needs somewhere to stay.
An impromptu encounter with Jasmine O’Hara, the owner of The Chariot, a Bed and Breakfast, is precisely what Craig needs. In exchange for his handiwork and doing odd jobs, Jasmine agrees to allow him to stay for an extended time. While she is a gracious host, there is a rigidity about her, and she hides behind a stoic exterior. Still, the more time Craig spends with her, the more he sees glimpses of a softer side he wants to explore.
Meanwhile, Craig fully immerses himself in Lakeside’s charm—the quaintness, slower pace, and sense of belonging that a tight-knit community provides. But a storm—literal and metaphorical—is brewing, threatening everything.
“A Home for Love” by Lisa Slater is a character-driven novel with magnetic small-town charm. Lakeside, Oregon, vastly differs from California’s busy, materialistic lifestyle and is far away from Craig’s cheating ex. Readers will instantly be at home within The Chariot’s walls and feel a sense of kinship with Craig’s burgeoning inner circle—Jasmine, Makana, Love, Zipper, and the mangy but lovable furball affectionately named Pono. Themes of family, friendship, and love are woven into the pages. Like hot cocoa on a cold day, the story will warm readers from the inside out.
We’ve heard the saying, “It takes a village” when raising a child, but the same can be said for a grown adult. Craig enters Lakeside lost and brokenhearted, looking for a mechanic. Still, he quickly realizes his car isn’t the only thing needing fixing. Slowly, a community forms around him, prompting his healing and offering camaraderie, purpose, and unconditional love. Each of his relationships teaches Craig something new about himself, and Slater does an excellent job of highlighting his process of self-discovery.
“A Home for Love” by Lisa Slater will appeal to readers who enjoy books about community and connection. The quirky characters that comprise Craig’s inner circle will entertain you with their eccentricities and pull on your heartstrings—a wholesome, feel-good book from beginning to end.

Craig was going to propose to his girlfriend & he gets home to find a strange man in their bed. Craig packs his clothing & leaves. His car breaks down in Lakeside. He is forced to stay in town & chooses to stay at Jasmine’s business. He becomes bored & helps Jasmine around the bed & breakfast & then reaches out to other citizens in Lakeside who need help. DHS & hospice are worried about the baby when Jasmine dies. Craig marries Jasmine & adopts the baby. Craig’s father puts together a team of experts to handle Jasmine’s diagnosis. The day of her scheduled surgery, she codes! A very interesting book & Ms. Slater has portrayed a believable, caring town of compassionate people. I highly recommend this book!
A Home for Love by Lisa Slater grabbed me from the very beginning. As a single mom doing it with the smallest amount of help, I connected deeply with Jasmine O’Hara’s journey—her strength, her doubt, her resilience. So many of her thoughts & struggles felt familiar, and as the story evolved, I found myself understanding the rest of her in a way that felt real and emotional.
This book made me both cry and smile. One of the things I loved most was Craig & his family. They weren’t perfect, but they were exactly what Jasmine and her son needed. They showed up with warmth, patience, and quiet strength, exactly when and how they were needed.
Lisa Slater writes with heart & honesty, and I’ll definitely be picking up more of her books.
I was totally captivated by this story. The characters are so real, I felt like I was right there with them, working, dreaming, sharing their lives, heartbreak, frustrations, conflicts, and struggles for survival. This story reveals resilience in the face of adversity, and the bond of community, and the discovery of oneself. Ultimately, I laughed, I cried, I held my breath. A truly wonderful story of love for one another as each one struggles with life, striving for variations of “success”. A really good read! Thank you Lisa Slater for writing this book!
This book shockingly wrecked me. I have tears running down my face as I type this, lol. The writing was funny and kept me on my toes, just like all the twists and turns and hilarious characters did! The ending was exactly what I wanted, but not what I thought I would get
This book was a gift to my mom and I from my grandma, and it's even signed by Lisa herself! Definitely one I'll be keeping on my shelf for some time 😊🩷
I loved this book for several reasons. My children grew up in Lakeside and it brought back many memories of their childhood. The other reason was the storyline. Love conquers all. Well done Lisa.
