A Kiss for the Holidays

Rate this book
Asher

I can still remember the very first day I met Dalton McKenzie and the day I fell in love with him, too. But after an awful party game, I realize that no matter how often he kisses my cheek or holds my hand, he will never love me the same way. Putting space between us seems like the best idea, but when we wind up trapped together in a tiny cabin with only one bed, space is not an option.

Dalton

Asher is my best friend. He's been by my side since we were nine years old, so when he starts pushing me away, I know something's wrong. He's colder than the snowstorm brewing outside our cabin, but it's not until he reveals his biggest secret that I finally understand. With my feelings for Asher clearer to me than ever before, I want to give him the best gift this Christmas.

A perfect kiss.

A Kiss for the Holidays is an MM, best friends to lovers romance. Featuring two adorable besties, sweet and spicy moments, low angst, a snowy setting, arts and crafts and lots of affectionate forehead kisses and pinkie holding. It’s part of Home for the Holidays, an LGBTQ+ holiday novella collection by eleven incredible authors.

I had to shove at least one holiday book in there before Christmas and I’m glad it was this one!!

Asher is an outcast, he chooses to blend into crowds, and spends his free time buried beneath the wonderful knowledge of books. He is reserved and sensitive, never thinking twice about wandering into parties or socializing. Until a radiant boy comes barreling into him, linking their pinkies together and announcing them as friends. He brought energy into Asher’s and of course, Asher couldn’t help but fall for him.

Dalton is outgoing, pure vigor, and his one stabilizer has always been his best friend, Asher. He is the only one who is able to calm that raging storm of thoughts in Dalton’s head. And although he loves and treasures him as a best friend Dalton has never thought of him as anything more. Until they suddenly become stranded in a cabin during a snowstorm and all the secrets come spilling out.

I had a really good time with this book!! Short and sweet. Your casual jock/nerd trope with some Christmas magic sprinkled in. And although this book is also steamy I have to say my favorite moments were when they decorated the cabin with crafts made from popcorn, pinecones, and twigs. So if you're looking for something laid back and Christmassy I would totally recommend this one. Thank you to all my friends who have already read this and made it pop up on my feed!!

Ugh… cute, cute, CUTE!

This was such a perfect little Christmas novella - full of my favourite soft tropes: very clingy besties to lovers, pining galore, bi awakening, the classic “everyone knew but them,” and a snowstorm that traps them in a cottage with, naturally, just one bed 😏

What surprised me most was how well the story built their personalities and shared history. For such a short novella, their emotional groundwork felt convincing, and once the “stranded together” part kicked in, everything clicked. Suddenly they had all the time in the world to talk, tease, warm each other up (literally), and finally get to all of their firsts.

Speaking of which. The steam. HELLO?? This novella had no business being that hot, not least thanks to the unexpectedly dirty mouth on one of our boys 🔥 I was absolutely not prepared and I’m not mad about it lol

Oh and then there‘s the little sausage dog Beate (as in, the German name Beate; my fellow Germans will surely giggle about that as much as I did. What an awesome name for a dog lol).

Sweet, wholesome, christmassy, hot, and overall a fantastic first pick for this year’s holiday reads. I really vibed with the writing and the chemistry, so I’m definitely tempted to check out more by this author 😏

“You’re so wet, love.” He kisses my neck again while his hand squeezes then releases my cock. […] “All this, just for me. I bet you’d taste like honey”. 🔥

Kissing him feels like everything good. Like that feeling you get when you walk into your house after a long trip - that comfort of being back in your own space. Asher feels like comfort. And he tastes like mine. 🥹

Many thanks to all my friends who made this book appear so often in my feed until I finally gave in and read it.
It was adorable, funny, heartwarming, and hot.
The perfect Christmas combination, and I just love friends-to-lovers stories.
I can't get the beginning out of my head, how they met, and especially Dalton as an overexcited, affectionate friend. Even though I could have strangled him for being so ignorant of his feelings, even though he knows Asher so well and judges him perfectly.
Anyway, all the little things that annoyed me led to a snowstorm and being trapped in a cabin.
It's really very spicy and beautiful how they grow closer.
Even though I have to wonder what it's like without proper washing facilities... but better not to think about it, it's just a silly little Christmas story, so switch off your brain and enjoy.

“I loved the taste of salt on your skin. Loved licking those adorable freckles on your stomach. I keep wondering what it would be like if I licked a little lower.” I am not proud of the mewl-like sound that leaves me as he wraps his hand around my cotton-covered erection.
“You’re so wet, love.” He kisses my neck again while his hand squeezes then releases my cock. I always imagined I’d be self-conscious of the fact that I produce excessive amounts of precum, but I am far from embarrassed when Dalton says, “All this, just for me. I bet you’d taste like honey,” before he dips his hand beneath the cotton and runs his finger along the tip, groaning at the beads of liquid he finds there.

This seemed very promising and cute at first – childhood BFFs, the pining, their family Christmas retreat in snowy Austria.

But the story went downhill for me pretty fast when it turned into smut half-way through. There's no development between Asher and Dalton, it literally goes from 0 to 100. Totally unrealistic and not my thing. I skimmed through the rest of the story just to finish it. There’s even time for some miscommunication towards the end.

This was my first read from this author and I don’t think their writing works for me.

“He reaches out his pinky finger and I place mine in his, watching as his grubby finger wraps around mine. […]
“There, now we are best friends for always.”
“For always?” I ask, the phrase sounding a little unusual to me.
“Yeah, for always. Because forever sounds too much like never and always means no matter what, even if things are bad. Always.”

This was really sweet and simple. I love seeing lifelong best friends finding love and being *in* love, and discovering everything sexual together. Dalton’s awareness of Asher’s feelings was pretty quick and easygoing.

I was a bit annoyed that the first thing they did together wasn’t kissing — like they go straight to rutt, frott and a blow first 😅 — but honestly, it made sense. They had so many doubts and everything felt so new, so that first proper kiss coming *after* all of that actually worked. It was sweet and intimate, and the build-up to something hotter was soooo good! Their chemistry is amazing, and it comes from years of just being there for each other, so adding intimacy and turning lovers was so natural. And once they started kissing… they did NOT stop 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠

Sex-wise, well… these boys have stamina, that’s all I’m saying. That cabin could tell stories, especially under ultraviolet lights 😅😅😅. Dalton was all in basically from the first moment, and seeing Asher’s confidence grow was adorable. Perfect 🥵✨🫶

We even get a mini third-act breakup, and it honestly hurt because they both ran away from each other. And I have a huge pet peeve with the whole “EVERYONE KNEW HE LOVED YOU BUT IT WASN’T OUR PLACE TO TELL!!!” Like why??? They’re family and close friends — aren’t they the ones who are supposed to open your eyes? Tell you important stuff?? God, I hate this lazy excuse authors use.

I know it’s a novella, and for such a small book we actually get plenty of emotion, pining and context to their story, but I still wished we’d gotten more of their “before” — their teenage years and how Asher survived all those years of solo pining. But overall it was good, super cute 🥰 Everything gets accepted without any issues at the end by family and friends, and I honestly believe their love will only grow stronger. That epilogue as adorable 😊

And that poor dog never barked or went out even once in those 3 days lol 🤣

“I love you, Asher. I am in love with you. I can look back on countless days of our past together and see it now. See that I have loved you for a very long time. I will spend every day proving to you that you are everything to me, Asher Ryan.” […]
“I love you, Dalton. With every fibre of my being, I love you.”
“That’s what I was hoping you’d say.” His eyes have gained back their sapphire sparkle. He stands then reaches out his hand to me, pulling me to my feet. Dalton links our pinkies together and, in a move reminiscent of that day twelve years ago, he moves our hands up and down in a shake.
“What are you doing?” I ask, looking down at our linked fingers.
“Promising to love you - for always.”

Best friends to lovers.
The MCs are 20/21.
Asher has never been kissed and has been in love with his best friend Dalton for years.
On a Christmas family holiday in Austria, snowed in alone in a cabin in the woods for 3 days, they figure things out.
Sweet and at times very cliché.
Not bad, but not a book I'd re-read.

📝 REVIEW & THOUGHTS:

This was so cute and sweet. I was expecting it to be completely angst free, and that was not the case with the pining involved, but it was still such a sweet and cute love story!

C.S. Autumn always creates well rounded characters, and I was surprised she managed to also do that in this short novella. The characters felt real, they were well developed and just so cute.

Maybe, when you hold someone and they feel like home, maybe that’s love on a whole different level.

A perfectly cute read for the holiday season. Friends to lovers might be an oversaturated trope, but when done right, it just works.

“God, you’re so hard, Asher. For me?” I take his cock into my hand and it’s soaking. Not just a dab of precum, but completely dripping.
“Always for you, Dalton, always.”

I feel like I say this in basically every review, but smut + feels is always a winning combo. A Kiss for the Holidays was sexy and sweet, a short fluffy read set in a snowy cabin with two adorable protagonists.

“What are you doing?” I ask, looking down at our linked fingers. “Promising to love you-for always.”

I think I’m officially a grinch. Maybe I’m just not ready for Christmas stories. I have been down in the dumps lately because a sweet story like this should have warmed my cold soul but I just couldn’t handle it. I recently read a book about best friends to lovers and I love that tripe but something about the overall obsession with each other just as friends is strange to me. I also don’t like that the “straight” friend doesn’t feel sexual or romantic feelings until the gay friend confesses their love. Then the straight friend is all in almost immediately.

Don’t let my review stop you from reading this though. Maybe lll revisit this someday.

Asher has been in love with his best friend Dalton since he was 17 and has always held out hope that one day Dalton would love him too—that is until a juvenile party game reminds Asher that Dalton is very much straight and very much uninterested.

Dalton cannot wait to spend another holiday with his best friend and their families, only he can feel Asher pulling away and putting distance between them and he doesn't understand why. When a snowstorm traps them together and Dalton uncover the truth, he can't believe how blind he's been.

I'm such a sucker for best friends to lovers, and Asher and Dalton were too stinking cute! Their story was toothachingly sweet with just the perfect amount of pining, angst, and steam!

ARC REVIEW

This was a cute Christmas holiday friends to lovers romance. You’re looking for a short Christmas love story then this is definitely for you.

I loved Dalt and Ash’s relationship in this and how healthy it was. I also love their friendship and also the need to communicate, especially from Dalton. For someone who hates confrontation he didn’t hold back from voicing his worries when he noticed that Ash was changing towards him and that just showed how much he really loved his friend and didn’t want to lose him.

This was an easy read, cute, low angst, filled with the needed amount of spice and fluff.

So this is going to be a really difficult review to write, because at first I thought I would absolutely love this little novella, but then it went downhill, and it went downhill fast.

So the first half of the book is sweet mixed with stunning angst. We have the cute gay guy being in love with his best friend, the trope we all love and that never gets old no matter how many times we read about it. Sweet Asher is madly in love with his best friend, Dalton, and Dalton is the cute golden retriever friend who is a bit too clingy and is making life hard for Asher just by being himself. Then there's the dare, the declining of a kiss, and it's perfectly angsty and gives Asher a reason to push Dalton away, hurting them both in the process.

All that is just like you'd want from a story like this, all down to the moment when they get stuck in a cabin in a snow storm, with only each other (and a dog) as company, and only a fire and a shared bed to keep them warm.

A fight, harsh words, and finally the truth coming out. Asher is in love with his best friend, and Dalton is now left with wondering if what he feels for his friend might also be more than just the platonic love he's been convinced is what they share this whole time.

Still perfect. Adorable. Exactly how this kind of story should go.

If only the author hadn't rushed what happened next. It might have ended up being a 4-5 star read. But just the morning after they are suddenly rubbing off on each other. Dalton, who's never had any thought of possibly being into guys before, is there jacking his best friend off, and out of absolute nowhere he's calling Asher "love". Ugh. Too soon.

The rest is also rushed. It almost felt like the author got bored of writing a plot and wanted to turn the story into porn instead, and the charm of the story was gone. I almost DNF'd it there after their strange morning together, but I hoped the sweetness would return. Sadly it didn't.

So hadn't it been for the rush to turn it dirty, and the need to always put as much spice as you possibly can on as few pages as possible, as so many authors seem to turn to nowadays, it would have gotten a much higher rating. Now instead it's a 2 star, and an almost DNF.
