I have this book on kindle; but I also really want to get it in paper back. This is one of favorite French books as it isn't just simple to follow along for beginners or just have us rememorize a bunch of vocab; but use them in a sentence that basically tells us about the life of Mr. Brown and his journey. We are reading a story as we are learning along with him. This makes it a lot more fun and I am able to remember things better as things are put into context and can try to visualize what is going on,
The biggest weakness these books have is lack of audios; but you can find plenty of free French alphabet and pronunciation guides online in order to help you out and book does try to tell you how you should pronounce things. So if you listen to those audios and practice record speaking what you read in the book, it should help and most people will tell you to have multiple resources (movies and shows may speak differently, hear words in different context or tenses and use more slang for example).
Overall, this is a great starting point still. I like to use this along with Easy French Step-By-Step, Learn French The Fast And Fun Way and Practice Makes Perfect Complete French All-In-One after I understand the basics. I am also using Rosetta Stone for writing, reading and Speaking practice as we put words we know to use in forms of short sentences and questions using pictures to help with the visuals.
I am studying French from a tutor, living in French-speaking Morocco, and trying to comprehend and even converse. This book was a clear straight-forward arrow thrown at this vast dart board.
the beginning of the book can move a bit too quickly for someone just learning the grammar. for this reason, i recommend you read a different introductory book in order to grasp the fundamentals of the language before moving on to this book. if you would rather not do the former, be prepared to read the beginning chapters several times in order to become familiar with the basics.
moving on to the latter portion(s) of the book, they are tremendous. you receive a parallel text with questions regarding the text and an accompanying explanation of the grammar. by the end of it, you will have a decent starting vocabulary. (i estimate ~800+ words?).
there is a dictionary in the back of the book which is also very useful. after you have finished the book, it easy extraordinarily easy to revisit chapters containing concepts that may confuse you in order to refine your understanding, due to the brief nature of the chapters. used in accompany with a french grammar reference of some kind and you will be good to go.
by the end of the book, you will be able to read news articles and understand the gist of what is being said (though many words will have to be searched in the dictionary).
If you are looking for eye-gougingly boring dialogues about - how creative - a man studying French, highly repetitive exercises, no audio material, and numerous typographical errors, this is the French textbook for you.
That said, the grammatical explanations are clear and concise.
Complete nonsense. This book is terrible for people trying to learn French. I took French for a few years back in middle school. Luckily I remember some of it and I could understand the first few chapters. They don’t actually teach vocabulary until later on in the book. It is incoherent and terribly planned out. If you are a first time French learner, do not waste your money on this book.
