If you love Twilight and ever wondered what a witchy reimagining might be like, then this is the book for you!

It was fun to see some of the same characteristics that I love from the series also reflected in The Knowing. I couldn’t help but giggle and smile the whole way through with all the subtle (and some not so subtle) nods that Twihearts will surely appreciate!

I also enjoyed the unique, darker vibes and magical qualities that the witchy aspect adds- perfect fall/winter YA read!

🖤earth magic
🖤mystery & suspense
🖤found family (circle)

While the connection between Charles and Lottie was my favorite, there is a full cast of characters for readers to get to know! I'm excited to see what the author does with the next book since she has established an older and younger generation to work with.

"The Knowing" by Kimberly Patton beautifully depicts the genuine challenges of being a teenager—navigating family dynamics, grappling with identity, and finding a sense of belonging—all while immersing readers in a captivating world filled with witches, hidden covens, and age-old magic. This YA paranormal romance follows Lottie, a girl who finds herself stepping into a realm of magic when a coming-of-age spell is activated on her 16th birthday. To her surprise, she learns not only that she is a witch but that she also has a soulmate.

As Lottie's birthday draws near, she becomes plagued by vivid nightmares, and peculiar events unfold around her. From the opening lines, the writing draws you in, and the characters are so relatable that you can easily visualize their journeys. I found myself completely invested in Lottie. She’s a wonderfully genuine character, and her romance adds a delightful touch to the narrative. I cherished her relationships with Charles, Mathilda, and her parents. If you enjoy gripping villains, enchanting witch tales, intriguing mysteries, tender romance, themes of found family, ancient spells, shapeshifters, and more, then this book is definitely for you.

For the past week, I've been craving "Breath of the Wild." Why? Because of this book. You see, BotW and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina came out around the same time, which means I was often playing BotW in the background of season 1, hanging out on the couch with my wife and brother, and it's a very potent memory of being comfortable and happy.

It took me a day or two to realize that it was The Knowing that was making this particular light go off in my brain! But that's definitely what was happening.

If you are a fan of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, if you're a fan of the Raven Boys, give this book a try! It reminded me a little of both, except the four boys and one girl of RB is four girls and one boy in The Knowing—and I really liked that particular dynamic.

I also enjoyed Lottie as a stubborn, emotional, slightly myopic teenager, because that's how I remember it, and I liked that she was allowed to be young and foolish, but also she was called out on it when she veered too far, and so her imperfections felt clearly chosen and honored—not an accident or an afterthought.

I also very much enjoyed the build up of the plot. The little details hinting that something bad is brewing (pun intended) start early, and every time I saw one, my inner detective was like, WRITE THIS DOWN! The plot deftly lays the tracks for the big finale, which was fast-paced and engrossing.

And honestly, love the witch lore and the curse (no spoilers) behind everything. Really creative and interesting.

If you're up for some witchy hijinks with teenagers who genuinely feel like young people, give The Knowing a try!

Cheers to Ms. Patton for taking me back to being 16 but not in a “cringe omg I was so awkward” way, in a “omg that’s exactly how my brain worked and heart felt” way. Seriously, this coming of age fantasy is a book I wish I could have read when I was in my early to mid teens. I would’ve felt so seen in the protagonist, the wonderful Lottie. Poor Lottie has experienced terrific nightmares as her 16th birthday approaches. She also notices increasingly weird behavior from kids at school, as new friends advance, and old ones retreat. Patton does a great job capturing the often insular imaginings of the teenage mind.

Things I really liked:
💜 There was never any “drama.” Lottie is a teenager, but she is maturing and handles things like one time friends rejecting her and frustration with her parents so well. And that was really refreshing to read, and Patton does this realistically. Between so many characters where there is friction, there is also healthy dialogue and that’s really original.
💜 Charles, our love interest, is so sweet.
💜 the imagery is really easily envisioned! For some reason, I kept picturing the town a little bit like the town in Stranger Things or Twilight! The setting was really easy to click into visually, and all of the scenes where the kids are at the movie or the mall were so nostalgic and well done!
💜 SCARY VILLAINS
💜 plot twist about 90% in I did not see coming!
💜 Beautiful magick lore
💜 Lottie Lottie Lottie

Read if you love spooky vibes, a witchy story, a sweetheart love interest, ancient covens, found family and mysteries.

Kimberly Patton's The Knowing is a captivating addition to the YA fantasy genre. It seamlessly combines the everyday struggles of adolescence with the allure of witchcraft and destiny. At its heart is Lottie, a seemingly ordinary teenager whose life is upended when a fleeting, unspoken thought urging her crush Charles to look at her actually works.

This unexpected incident propels Lottie into a hidden world of magic, where she discovers her place within a coven alongside Charles and three other young witches, Wren, Sunni, and Rowen. Bound together by a history that stretches back centuries, the group must navigate the challenges of their mystical bond and the threat of a dark witch whose pursuit of Lottie raises unsettling questions about her power.

Patton excels at grounding the supernatural within the familiar rhythms of teenage life. Lottie's voice is fresh and relatable, and her relationships-with friends, family, and her coven-add warmth and humor to the narrative. The novel balances lighthearted moments with a growing sense of danger, resulting in a story that feels enchanting and suspenseful.

With its blend of modern coming-of-age themes and timeless magical lore, The Knowing offers readers an engaging, fast-paced tale that will resonate with fans of YA fantasy.

The Knowing is a cozy, autumnal witchy Young Adult story that pulls you deep into a 2000s nostalgia with its invigorating atmosphere and intriguing characters that you immediately fall in love with.

As the story develops, it dives into a darker themed-atmosphere which was quite unexpected, thrilling and loveable. So you definitely get a beautiful mix of this paranormal story.

With that being said, and everything that I love about this story, one trope I absolutely loved with all my heart -is not only the beautiful connection Lottie has with her friends/coven, but - it is the "I'll find you in every lifetime" trope between ***SPOILER ALERT*** Lottie and Charles. MY HEART <3

So if you're looking for an engaging autumnal-vibe book for the remainder of October or any other time of the year, do yourself a favor and pick this one!

The Knowing is a supernatural coming of age story that is both charming and captivating. Kimberly Patton’s spellbinding debut captures the magic of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the teen angst of Twilight. I was taken on an incredible adventure with Lottie as she navigates the newly discovered world of powerful witches, family secrets, and a mysterious enemy that threatens to destroy everything dear to her. Add a dash of romance and teen drama and you have a fun, fast-paced novel that will keep you turning the pages until the very end!

The Knowing by Kimberly Patton is a sweet, cozy coming of age paranormal romance. Shortly before turning sixteen, Lottie is plagued by unsettling dreams and strange occurrences. Additionally, the popular kids at school suddenly take an interest in her. She soon discovers that she’s a witch—and happens to have a soulmate. This tale is full of secrets and surprises and magic and mayhem. There’s action, mystery and plenty of moments that tug at your heartstrings. I especially enjoyed Lottie’s relationships with Charles, Mathilda and her parents. Told in third person from the perspectives of both teens and adults, this witchy tale will appeal to all ages. 4.5 stars.

This was a little Teen Witch, a little Craft, with dashes of Charmed and even Sabrina. I loved Lottie. In YA lately, so many characters have lost that teenagerhood, and it loses that YA narrative. Patton hits it out of the park with Lottie, Wren, Sunni, Rowen, and Charles. They're teenagers who have school in the morning, go to the movies, and blush when their crush looks their way. It's super sweet to see them come together and bond. Their magic and the history behind it, their lives, etc. wove together well and gave the story its "page turner" feel. Patton hit it out of the park with her debut, and I can't wait to read more from her!

This book instantly threw me back to my teen years, it felt like watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch all over again, with that mix of fun, mystery, and magic. It pulled me right in with its witchy vibes, the secrecy, and of course, Lottie herself, who has no idea she’s a witch.

But just when I was enjoying that light, hazy, young-witch feel… it went dark. Boo. Totally caught me off guard! The story suddenly deepens, the evil surrounding Lottie, the eerie revelations about her identity, and the sense that darkness might actually be stronger than the coven protecting her.

I was especially hooked by the elders’ storyline, Mathilda and her circle trying to uncover who the real threat is to the witches and to Lottie herself. Those chapters gave me chills and had me on the edge of my seat.

The book is packed with mystery, backstory, and slow, steady unraveling. I only wish Lottie’s true powers had been explored more, they’re hinted at several times, but never fully shown. Still, the teenage love story will definitely make younger readers swoon, and the twist near the end genuinely shocked and broke my heart for her.

All in all, The Knowing is a witchy, spooky read full of secrets, goosebumps, and heart. It’s got that nostalgic teenage charm mixed with real darkness, and I loved every bit of that blend.
