In his spare time, paramedic Ryan Boyd loves to collect and write about old PSA’s - Public Service Announcements. From terrifying vintage workplace videos to trippy ‘Stop Smoking’ ads, his hobby is quickly becoming an obsession. But when he opens a link to a mysterious video, these horrifying fictional worlds start to manifest into reality with devastating consequences…
Rob writes visceral, concept-driven horror stories, anchored by complex characters and offbeat narratives.
Born in Portsmouth, UK, Rob received his bachelor of arts in Film Production from the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham. Having trained in filmmaking, and working as a director and producer on everything from music videos to shorts to feature-length anthology films, Rob’s official writing journey started in 2020.
When not writing, he can be found watching cheesy 90s films, baking cakes and haunting local bookstores.
I read the author's first collection shortly after it came out and I've been a fan ever since, even though he is objectively the WORST, I keep coming back because his stories are just so good (since this is Goodreads I have to disclose that saying that Rob is the worst is a JOKE between me and the author not me posting a review "primarily about the author's behavior"). Long story short I've never been disappointed by any of this guy's stories and this little mix media/found footage horror story/cautionary tale was no exception, I loved it. It was short but effective and tremendously enjoyable to read.
A fascinating multi media horror novelette that explores the nature of reality. When paramedic Ryan opens a link to a video the fictional narrative invades the real world. Ryan is obsessed with collecting weird and wacky Public Service Announcements and his addiction to these, often creepy, PSA’s leads to real life horror.
This was super short, and super unsettling. The whole premise behind the YouTube video and how only he could see it. I've fallen down a lot of rabbit holes on YouTube, and I follow a channel called Chilling Scares, this sounds like something that would be on there had it actually happened. And who's to say it didn't? That's the scary part. It was an immensely unsettling story, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.
Carefully done found footage-slash-internet horror, a morality tale for today's online generation. Equally morbid and clever, this fast-paced short won't persuade anyone to stay off the internet, but will certainly whet one's appetite for more Ulitski stories!
