Rogue Agent by Dan Ford…don’t be put off by the start… it’s set in the future but quickly comes to the present. Main character Tom Wiseman, former FBI operative and now Army CID investigator is tasked with finding out what happened to a downed UN helicopter in the Middle East. He is pitched against a canny enemy and an old colleague Olsen.

He has obstacles placed in his way as he tracks leads and suspects with the help of many new colleagues, many junior in the services. Many twists and turns had me not wanting to put the book down, it will grab you as you go… ‘one more chapter…..ok just one more….’ It’s hard to put down!!

My favourite part was when he finally realises who the very smart and elusive enemy is that had involvement in the helicopter being shot down, and his dogged following of that foe.

I loved the book was hard to put down, I found it similar to Tom Clancy’s style which is a compliment to Dan the author. Not quite Jack Ryan but the same tenacious style.

Absolutely highly recommend this book you will love it. Can’t wait to see the next one in the Rogue Agent series!!👍

I am lucky to be able to review my Advanced Reader Copy (ARC), of this action thriller, and find it hard to believe this is a debut contribution in the Action/Thriller genre for this author. A fast paced action packed read if ever I’ve read one. Tom Wiseman (our main character) is likeable, humorous, smart and believable in the way he goes about his business.
Having travelled to this region during my own military career I can attest to the accurate descriptions of the sights, sounds and smells described by the author. I felt compelled to keep turning the pages till well after my usual bed time. If you liked ‘I am Pilgram’ you are sure to like this.
I highly recommend this seriously good read from Dan J Ford, and am already looking forward to the next instalment in the Rogue Agent Series.

Rogue Agent is fast paced, exciting and enthralling. The characters quickly feel like people you know. If you loved I am Pilgram you will love following Tom Wiseman across the world and back to front line action to save the world. Futuristic and fantastic, Highly recommend.

Rogue Agent is a near-future military thriller that hits all the right targets. Dan J Ford has created a compelling one-man wrecking crew in his protagonist, Tom Wiseman.

Wiseman, a Former FBI agent and current Army criminal investigator is contacted by his former mentor and Quantico trainer five years after Tom’s FBI’s career ended badly. His mentor – who Tom feels betrayed him – calls about a case involving a Saudi-born suspect who was shot and killed by the FBI. It’s tempting, but not tempting enough for Tom to reconnect – at least not yet.

Meanwhile, a United Nations helicopter carrying a governor and four crew has gone missing in Afghanistan. Tom’s job is to find it, figure out what happened, and locate any survivors. But as Tom delves deeper into the mission, it’s clear there’s far more at stake than he originally thought (including, eventually, the discovery of a suspicious weapons shipment). It’s the beginning of an action-packed journey and intertwining plot that will lead Tom from Alabama and West Virginia, to Amsterdam and elsewhere.

Readers looking for a military thriller in the style of Brad Thor’s Scott Horvath series have come to the right place. Wiseman is a one-man wrecking crew who leaves it all on the field every day, despite suffering from crippling PTSD. One perfect line from Wiseman’s enemy perfectly sums up the enormity of Wiseman’s impact: “One man has done this to us? One lowly FBI agent?”

Ford, the author, a decorated combat serviceman himself, proves to be particularly gifted at creating believable action scenes. Throughout the book, he delivers all the goods military thriller fans are looking for: a suspicious old case that just won’t go away, a present-day threat with national security implications, and a flawed but talented agent on a path to redemption.

Thematically, Tom’s high-functioning memory is an intriguing gift that’s mentioned more than a few times, and human cognition is a running theme in the story. Ford juxtaposes Tom’s abilities with lots of creative and colorful dialogue, as well as plenty of compelling secondary characters. And for those who love cutting-edge tech, being mildly futuristic, Rogue Agent also explores interesting territory relating to cybernetic brain implants and other tantalizing future innovations.

In a nutshell, Rogue Agent is an exceptional series debut that will leave you wanting more.

”Rogue Agent”, is an exciting debut thriller from Dan J. Ford. At the heart of "Rogue Agent" is the protagonist, Tom Wiseman, war hero, FBI and CID Agent, whose life takes an unexpected turn when he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens not only his agency but also global security. When Tom’s FBI mentor betrays him (?), Tom returns to the Army and the CID. When tasked to investigate the downing of a UN helicopter in Afghanistan, an ambush sets Wiseman on a mission to uncover a conspiracy, a conspiracy involving terrorists, government officials and big pharma / big tech (some really cool high-tech). And maybe a hired assassin or two. Ford’s protagonist could have easily gone down the familiar super-hero trail. Wiseman has a superior memory and knows his way around a gunfight and fistfight, but he also suffers flashbacks from the mission that scarred him physically and psychologically. The pacing of the “Rogue Agent” is another highlight, as Ford skillfully builds tension through a series of twists and turns. I was a little confused as the story starts out with Tom in the FBI, sharing some personal moments with his family, a female friend and her teenage tech-savvy foster child (who we’ll hear more from). Once Tom leaves on his Afghan mission, the action picks up and as the pages fly by, you anxiously wait for the various plot lines to meet. Dan J. Ford’s “Rogue Agent”, an excellent debut thriller and a protagonist to add to your TBR list.

Book Review – Rogue Agent – Dan J. Ford – Paperback
ROGUE AGENT by Australian author Dan Ford is a different kind of action thriller but notably good. Set five to 10 years in the future, protagonist Tom Wiseman, a former FBI agent and now an Army CID (Criminal Investigations Division) special agent is tasked with investigating a downed United Nations helicopter in the war-torn Middle East.

While investigating he quickly realizes that he is up against a cunning adversary and surprisingly a former Bureau colleague and mentor whose career continues to escalate within the FBI.

Wiseman's ‘old-school’ investigative skills and superior memory were the highlights of this narrative. He definitely knows how to handle himself both with a gun and with his fists. Ford’s accurate descriptions of the ‘sights, sounds and senses’ of the story were described well. Ford is a good ‘raconteur.’

The pacing of the plotline was also enthusing. Ford skillfully built tension through a number of twists and turns and kept me reading with anticipation of “what-next?” He did a nice job in bringing the various plotlines together at the end.

Rogue Agent is a gratifying and likable mystery crime thriller read. Special thank you to Dan Ford for the copy of Book 1 of a sure-to-be exciting series.

Convoluted unrealistic plot with so many characters and side plots that the story doesn’t hang together. Did not help that there were so many typos to distract. Then halfway through the story it devolves into a killing frenzy that seems completely out of character for the protagonist who seems to be well liked by those under his command and a very capable agent. Never explained what Ultravision is, what it’s used for or why they need to recover it, or what it has to do with the overall story. Even the love interest is complicated - choose one woman and stop thinking about the other already. Action packed, but not in a good way.

Military mystery thriller meets "near future" science fiction.

It should have worked... but something in this debut of the Tom Wiseman series just seems a little "out of focus" for me.

The action is there, almost every chapter.

I will read the next one as I find the time, for now I will be sharing "Rogue Agent" in our free little library and I hope the next person who reads it enjoys it even more than I have.

Great first book launching into this genre!! Can't wait for more of Agent Wiseman adventures. Dan J. Ford put enough unknowns in the book so he can go both forward and back in Agent Wiseman's life. Read the Novella Investigating Agent first. It works well if read first or after Rogue Agent.

Great read! I was quickly wrapped into the story and read a quarter of the book in one sitting. Exciting plot that was unpredictable and takes you on a great ride. You know a good book when you are disappointed that it ends. I can't wait for the next one.
