Anne Hagan is the author of more than twenty works of fiction in the mystery, romance, and thriller genres. She writes of family, friends, love, murder, and mayhem in no particular order and often all in the same story. She’s a half owner of the weekly discount eBook newsletter, MyQueerSapphFic, the managing director of the non-profit, iReadIndies, a wife, parent, foster parent, and an Army veteran. She draws from all of those experiences when she writes because truth is often stranger than fiction.
4 stars. A very fun and dark collection of horror novellas. Sapphics and horror will always grab my attention so I was excited to pick this up and I can say that it definitely deliver. There were some duds in here but the ones that were good were really damn good. My favorites were:
-‘Beautiful Eyes’ by Selina Shaw - My favorite of the collection. This was bad ass and graphic. A woman sets out to hurt the man who hurt her best friend whom she has a crush on. The writing was fantastic and the story was so incredibly unhinged. -‘Mama Always Said’ by Ocean - It was the writing style of this one that really did it for me. The plot was good as well but Ocean’s writing really made it stand out in the bunch. -‘Red String’ by Alisha Kelley - This one was so fucked. I loved it. Easily my second favorite in the collection as the ending had me flinching and squirming. I was SHOOK. -’Walled In’ by Ann Hagan - The plot twists in this were really good and I did not see it coming. Also, that ending was really good. I need to read more by Hagan asap.
Overall, this was a really good collection and I think there is something for everyone if you’re in the mood for some spooky and sometimes fucked up quick reads.
I'm not a horror lover. I've read a few of the stories. It'll take me awhile to get through them all. (I did read TJ Dallas's first). But the stories are first rate, the writing provocative and scary! Even if you don't like horror, take your time reading it. You'll be able to get through it. If you like horror, you'll really enjoy this book. Remember the proceeds go to GCLS! 5 stars!
This horror anthology starts with a bang, and the shockingness doesn't let up. While all the stories ae scary in one way or another, some are more intense or shocing than others. Some had unexpected twists. The editor, Anne Hagan, said she broadened the premises of the genre and it worked. These 11 stories run the gamut of scariness.
