arc review:
growing up, momma always told anevae & her little sister, eiriana, stories about the kingdom of caellaias. this upset poppa, as he repeatedly told momma to stop telling them about these fairytales. they never quite agreed on the topic, but the girls never understood why it always upset poppa so much. they were captivated by these stories -- the royal family, the surrounding territories, the creatures that inhabited them. unfortunately, they only got to hear them when poppa wasn't around.
anevae relocates to colorado for work where she's able to research & conduct experiments from the comfort of her home, a cute little cabin in the middle of nowhere. eiri decides to move along with her, but she isn't a fan of the woods, so she finds an apartment in the city.
after settling in, anevae repeatedly catches sight of an oddly large, black & orange fox that is always right at the treeline watching her. every time she tries to get a picture of it to send to eiri, the fox runs off.
anevae decides to go & introduce herself to her one & only neighbor. she & maevye hit it off instantly, as they both feel a sense of calm & comfort in one another's presence. soon, they're spending more time together, as maevye decides to show anevae around the woods to get more familiar with the area & climate for her experiments.
before either of them realize, there's a shift in chemistry, as well as the atmosphere around them. a ward maevye once felt around the parameter of anevae's home is down & she can't seem to figure out why...until she does.
this was a cute, quick read. there's world building, character development, smut, lgbtq+ representation, shifters, vampires, & so much more. while it was enjoyable, there were a few things that stood out to me.
*note: this is the author's first book, so while i, personally, believe these are a few things that could be improved, i definitely believe there is a lot of potential for future releases*
thankfully, there were a lot of details about important locations, surroundings, etc., but there was too much detail/focus on less relevant things. while the smutty scenes were good, some of them also felt severely rushed & lacked some depth. some of the dialogue didn't flow as naturally as normal conversation, it felt very stiff & formal almost. the way they addressed each other at times just felt a little off/forced. i feel that if the details were focused only on necessary things, some of the scenes throughout the book were slowed down & extended further, as well as the conversation felt more natural/animated, this easily could've been a 4 star for me.
this book does have some trigger warnings, so please check them out before diving in. it also ends on a cliffhanger, so stay tuned for book two in the series. happy reading🫶🏻
