This is book three in the Kit Melbourne series and sees Kit carrying out more duties for her boss, the Vampire Guild leader. Doing all the tasks her and his fellow vampires cannot do during the day. Kit has come back somewhat changed after her journey to the Fae realm in the last book, as she tried to save the life of her boyfriend Lawson, who was caught up in a curse that had sapped him of almost all of his life energy. It took months for Kit to return, to find he had awoken, but forgotten all about them having any sort of relationship. Now he is in a serious relationship with another woman from their dojo, Hannah, who keeps him on a very short lease and doesn’t want him to have anything to do with Kit anymore, which is hard for Kit. She can’t throw off her love for him, or even her need to have him in her life as a friend, but she isn’t getting any chance to even remain friends with him.
She still has her unhealthy relationship with vampire Fain, but he is getting more demanding in wanting her blood, never mind her companionship and he starts to become ill, something that shouldn’t be possible in his vampire state. She is no longer just human, seemingly now part Fae and has to learn mage-craft as part of her duties for the Guild and its leader. Especially in protecting his home during the day when he is vulnerable and she has to place protections spells around the grounds. She is being trained by the outgoing Dayrunner, but he isn’t much better at mage-craft than her. It seems someone has been fiddling with the protection spells and she is told not to bother the Guild Council leader with her problems.
Her new flatmates think they have a ghost in the house, as she now has the uncontrollable power to telekinetically move objects, without even trying to. All it takes is her emotions getting the better of her. She has to try and avoid Fain’s attention, as he is getting more dangerous and practically attacking her instead of being in a relationship anymore. She is wary now of being out and about once the sun has gone down, especially after finding some curses laying on her doorstep, one which harms a good friend of hers, instead of Kit, who was the actual target. It seems someone is trying to kill her, but is it connected with her role as the guild leader’s Dayrunner, especially with the hatred for humans amongst the members of the Vampire Council. She is sent away for an action she unknowingly committed that was against the vampire laws. She is sent to gain knowledge of any vampires in the area and also to purchase a load of gemstones, to be used in spells.
She is up against the enemies of her boss, who keep trying to get her into trouble, rogue vampires and newly turned vampires, as well as a jealous girlfriend who dislikes her closeness to their boyfriend. Her life is yet again in danger and she is in a particularly ‘delicate’ state whilst all this is going on. Whether her boss will believe in her and ignore the rumours being bandied around about from certain vampires and vamp initiates, who don’t want her to be part of the Vampire Guild. If she is going to survive for much longer, she needs to uncover who is attempting to curse her and put a stop to it. This is another fantastic read in this series and certainly sees Kit facing a lot more danger and more magic than she can handle on her own. I hope there are going to be a good few more books to this series, as I can’t wait to read the next one. I would definitely recommend this unusual series to anyone who likes to read paranormal tales with vampires, shifters, Fae, mages and much, much more. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
