KRISSY MATHEWS HAS RETURNED. Four years ago, the beautiful seventeen-year-old vanished in the forest near her home. Obsessed with solving the case, a young hotshot detective has hunted her relentlessly. Now she bursts through the door of her hometown’s hospital, a lifeless child in her arms and a man she refers to as her husband by her side. The police pry Jasper Ryan from her grasp and charge him with kidnapping. Her family has been through hell, the detective wants answers, and no one understands her feelings for Jasper. Gripped by Stockholm syndrome, Krissy attempts to defend her kidnapper, but cracks form in her selective memory of the years she spent in captivity. She is forced to question what she thought was true love, borne of the twisted abuse she suffered while isolated in a mountain cabin. She is torn between the captor who fathered her child and the handsome detective who will stop at nothing to lock him up. Mountain Girl is a wicked, turbulent thrill ride that will keep you guessing until the final page is turned.
SHELBY KNUDSEN has been a member of the all-female band Wild Honey for more than a decade. Her first novel, Mountain Girl, was an intense thriller about forbidden love and captivity. Her second novel, One Night Only, is an intimately informed story of one musician's obsession with fame, and how much she's willing to sacrifice to achieve it. Shelby lives in Fernie, B.C. with her husband and daughters. She is represented by Hilary McMahon at Westwood Creative Artists.
Great first book for a local author. It is always inspiring to see local ladies doing what they love.
I thought this book had an interesting storyline and plot. It is a page turner that keeps you intrigued, while also informing the reader about the layered dimensions of Stockholm Syndrome- which I found really interesting. However, it reminded me little bit of "Fifty Shades of Grey"... but more of an in the mountains version.
Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a twisty/adventure/love/mystery read!
A chance pick up from the local book store in Fernie, BC turned into a one sitting read. It's an easy read with great flow. I absolutely loved the little pieces of Fernie sprinkled into the book. Looking forward to more!
Shelby Cain’s debut novel shows the depth she can take her characters to, while keeping you locked in the story from start to finish. Krissy’s kidnapping, escape and hard battle to take control of her life and start living again is hypnotic. Can’t wait for her next novel.
I’d say a 3.5 star. It was a really good book all the way through till the end. I feel the book got a little lost or didn’t know how to end?… or I missed something? I think it just fizzled out for me. I get the concept and understand it but was expecting more maybe. Still a great read and happy I bought it. Always fun to read a local writers books :)
