Milline koletu saladus peitub St. Cecilia minevikus?
I was born in Ikom, Nigeria (where my parents were missionaries) and come from a Liverpool medical family, but am not a doctor of medicine. . After graduating in Jurisprudence from Jesus College (University of Oxford), I was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn. Despite qualifying as a barrister, my first love was English; this led to a PhD in English Literature at Birkbeck College (University of London).
In my academic career, I lectured and published widely on the subject of tuberculosis and nineteenth-century literature, but somehow managed to avoid contracting galloping hypochondria and turned my attention to crime fiction.
Please note this book was first published as “Night’s Black Agents”
When DI Markham's girlfriend, Olivia, finds that her good friend, Sister Felicity, seems to have disappeared.
Markham and his deputy, DS Noakes, are called to investigate. Unfortunately, they do find the missing Nun ... she's been strangled and left in a confessional box.
And she is not the only one who will lose their lives to a savage killer. But who wants to kill these children of God?
What Markham and Noakes find are lots of secrets that have yet seen the light of day. And why does Olivia feel that these killings are related to her past?
Again, this is the third in a series that is well written with a suspenseful mystery with lots of suspects to follow. The characters are impressive and the author has done a bang-up job of bringing them to life. Although third, this one is easily read as a stand alone, although I highly recommend starting with the very first book.
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Books n All Book Promotions for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
This is book 3 of 4 and I am really getting to know the characters. Markham is still a little insecure regarding his relationship with Olivia. Noakes is still the loveable brash individual and the newer team members continue to develop workwise and personality wise.
This book brings Noakes wife into the story and the reader is treated to a strong woman who likes to move in the higher circles and dresses accordingly. Trying to coach her husband to match up is a battle I doubt she will win. Her links with the church make her part in the story work very well.
Why are nuns and monks being murdered? This is the main question and as the body count increases Markham and his team are baffled. The clues are very well hidden and the team are, as usual, up against it to try to solve the case.
It has become the norm for Olivia to be caught up in the middle of the murders and this book continues that theme.
I spent more time working out the many quotes than working on the plot. Perhaps a bibliography would be a good idea. I am also not sure how many more murders Olivia can be involved in and remain sane. I think I will give the remains 9 books a miss for the sake of my sanity.
Another classic murder for Gil Markham to solve. The only drawback is the author’s continual use of words which need to be looked up! Any intelligent avid reader is used to the odd strange expression but this author seems to delight is the use of obscure words - rallentando being just one. This takes away from the story.
One of the best so far I have read in this series. Well written, a good plot and thankfully lacking some of the obsessive need to include a particular form of sexual behaviour which has been prominent in several of the other books. Here we have a straightforward whodunnit, why was it done. Everything takes place around associated religious establishments and convent, both sorely in need of funds. An elderly priest dies leaving, it is expected, his family's wealth to his Order. A nun who counselled him is murdered, and other deaths follow. Our team of detectives follow the clues and even though they don't pick up on some of them as quickly as one would like, well, it hardly matters. A good read, worthy of five stars. I will happily read more now that the writer seems to have got over curious obsession.
Third in the series. The Author is z very talented writer, in my opinion. She has a lovely command of the English language. Equally talented in developing a plot. I'm enjoying the series and getting interested in the characters. So far I'm find ing this series smart and very well designed. I'll be reading the next book. If you like British crime, you'll enjoy this. I think it's important to read this series in order. It's important to understand how the DS, DI and Olivia all grow and develop moving through each case. I recommend this series as a nice distraction from any stressors one may have going on in life.
DI Markham's girlfriend is receiving counselling from Sister Felicity following her involvement in the murder at Hope Academy. So it is a shock when the good sister is found murdered in the confessional at St Cecilia's convent. When more people die, it seems someone has a vendetta against the holy place. But is it someone with a grudge against monks and nuns to is the perpetrator closer to home.
And another strong church theme. Although I picked some of the story early, it’s still worth reading to see it all play out. Plenty of gothic elements- premonitions, glances, atmospheric scenes. Our hero and his girlfriend continue to feature- by now his girlfriend must think she’s jinxed.
Another very gripping story. The characters get more rounded in each subsequent book. This story is taught and well paced, nice meeting Muriel, Sergeant Noakes’s better half, adds a bit of comedy to some very bleak situations. Definitely highly recommended
This is an amazing series! With each book, characters grow and show themselves. The mysteries, although pretty grim, are also so well written, that one guesses to the end. And you will certainly grow your vocabulary and appreciate the amazing writing. Beware, though. Our hero is pretty dark! Highly recommended.
Couldn,t put it down. One night practically with no sleep, and only one book to go 😤 Very atmospheric, very descriptive. In fact in most of the book I felt I was actually there.
Olivia is getting help by going to St Cecilia church and talking with them, especially Sister Felicity. Noakes is still the blunt speaking, mismatch and they still talk of moving him out. For Markham he wants him, they work well together. Olivia has a mesmerizing effect on Noakes. Now a call from the church that a nun is missing, the one that is a friend of Olivia’s. As she feels they are related to her past, of which Markham is unaware of. Good plot and more murders of which Olivia is gets mixed up in.
A great new episode in the Markham & Noakes series. A surprising plot, again well written, although the Roman Catholic references are getting a bit too much. It's not yet Father Brown, but we're not far off.
Author’s usual nicely plotted murder mystery with clues enough so you know you should have guessed right and seldom did. Interesting reading. Clean. Narrator is clear and gives readers an engaging time.
This series had a promising start. Sadly, the books are less interesting by the time #3 came along. There is a lot of woo woo religiosity which wasn't overpowering in book 1, but takes over as the series progresses. The characters are very interesting, but the author feels the need to put the protagonist's girlfriend in danger EVERY TIME.
Another classic British murder mystery in the D I Markham series. They just keep getting better as the characters become more rounded out, or in D S Noakes' case, just rounder. Plenty of suspense as the body count rises and plot twists to keep you guessing. Highly recommended.
I'm really enjoying this series of mystery and murder. I love Noakes with his secret crush on Liv. And his relationship with his boss Onto my next in the series
Another great story by Catherine in This series featuring Inspector Markham and his sidekick Noakes. Lots of twists and turns and an unexpected ending.
Three stars a bit generous. Very disappointed- seems to be writing the same book every time. Only got half way through and skipped to end. Won’t read anymore. And she gets into trouble every book.
Sister Felicity of St. Cecilia's convent has been found dead in the confessional box. But she is only the first murder. Detectives Markham and Noakes investigate. An entertaining modern mystery
Author’s usual nicely plotted murder mystery with clues enough so you know you should have guessed right and seldom did. Interesting reading. Clean. Narrator is clear and gives readers an engaging time.
