A convict. A firefighter. A chance to slay the past and heal a wounded heart.

Firefighter Jackson Hall is content with his work in search and rescue with the aerial division in California. He also heads up the Cal Fire Inmate Program.
With his faithful golden retriever by his side, and the animal charities he’s dedicated to, he needs nothing else to make him happy.

Preferring life with no-strings-attached entanglements, Jax avoids anything more than hook-ups. That is, until one timid prisoner catches his eye and he finds himself doting on the inmate in ways he never expected.

Ayen Gonzalez was convicted of the attempted manslaughter of his husband, despite the brutal circumstances surrounding his marriage. His past is far less than ideal, and now he just wants to do his time and get out.

As a reward for good behavior, he is given the opportunity to work for an inmate program to be trained to fight forest fires. Ayen is more than happy for the opportunity to escape the prison walls.
Then he meets Jackson and his heart stutters whenever the striking older man comes near. Thing is, Ayen can’t quite figure out what he has to offer a man like Jax.

When the program ends, will Jackson be able to set things in motion to right the wrongs of the justice system in Ayen’s case? Or will he be stuck waiting three more years for the man he’s fallen in love with?

Trigger Violence, abuse.

It’s hard to think of too much to write that wouldn’t t be spoilers after the blurb, which is basically the plot without any embellishment. Jackson runs a training camp for those inmates who could get called on to fight wildfires in an emergency. I have heard of programs like that that help give another pool of people to call on during especially bad wildfire seasons, so the premise would be realistic. It would also make sense to draw from the non-violent offenders for the program, as you wouldn’t want to let violent offenders out in a chaotic, dangerous situation, so Ayen seems a realistic choice, too.

There is a spark or connection between Ayen and Jackson when they first are in close proximity, something about each one that catches the other’s interest. They are drawn to each other, and Jackson, especially, seems to take advantage of any chance to be near Ayen. He is struck by how Ayen keeps himself pretty isolated, only really spending time with his cellmate, who is a volunteer for the program, too. Ayen is resigned to finishing out the remaining three years of his sentence, but Jackson thinks that an appeal or review of his case is warranted after Ayen shares some details about his case, and Jax makes it his mission to find someone to look into it. As training continues, the convicts are drawn into a near fire where things escalate quickly, resulting in some status changes that may be what is needed to ease the way for the two to be together. Only time will tell the future for Ayen.

The characters are realistic and relatable, but things don’t always go smoothly, given a group of convicts that might not act as you would expect them to, with hopes their sentences could get cut or privileges earned if they worked hard and applied themselves. I liked the interactions between Ayen and Jackson, but was less sure about the realism of some of their times together., but it did work to move the story along.

I always enjoy this authors work, and grab her books when they come up for review. I have never been disappointed, stories are always entertaining, and hold my interest, flowing easily from beginning to end. Looking forward to the next installment.

Wow what a fantastic read
I could not put this book down I was totally hooked.
Ayen has been in jail now conflicted of murder when really, it should’ve been self defence. He had been with his husband for 10 years and the abuse that he put up with was horrific. But because some evidence was not allowed in his court case he was found guilty. He and his friend were selected to go on a fire program for inmates. And this is where he first spotted Jackson. The attraction was instant and very distracting to Ayen.
Jackson has been running this program for many years now, and in that time, he hadn’t been attracted to an inmate that is until he noticed a little bird, who is the prettiest little thing you’ve ever seen, and his name was Ayen. The attraction that he felt was instant, and Jackson found himself wanting to make sure he was protected, because some of the OCs were not the nicest of guys.
Jackson really put himself out there to spend time with Ayen, even to the fact of in the middle of night, going to Ayens room after dark, so they can spend time together. These two were electric. And Jackson knew he would do anything to make sure. Ayen Was given another day in court to prove his innocence. I’ve got to say that these two are just amazing together. I honestly couldn’t put this book down. The passion between them was intense and like fireworks going off. They both risked a lot to spend their time together. Was it worth the risk???? An absolutely brilliant read totally loving this series.

Eve Riley is back, and this time she’s brought a firefighter… and an inmate. Yes, you heard that right—“Jackson” gives us a love story between an inmate and a man who’s not quite ready to be swept off his feet, and trust me, there’s plenty of fanning yourself as you flip through these pages. Who knew Cal Fire’s Inmate Program could spark this much heat?

If you're here for a sweet, innocent love story, maybe take a detour. Jackson comes with a flashing neon “not for prudes” sign, and let me tell you, it lives up to every sultry promise. You’re not just dipping your toes into the MM romance waters—Riley has you diving headfirst into the deep end, where blushing is guaranteed, and putting the book down? Impossible.

But what I love most about this book? It's not just about the steam (though, believe me, the steam is real). There’s heart here—Jackson and Ayen are more than just two guys finding love in a tough situation. They’re kindred spirits, crossing paths in the most unexpected, fate-driven way. Riley’s knack for weaving emotional depth into her romances is in full force, giving you those moments that tug at your heartstrings just when you think the heat couldn’t get any hotter.

So, if you're a fan of MM romance and looking for a rollercoaster of emotions—complete with sizzling scenes and a whole lot of heart—grab “Jackson.” Just maybe keep a fan nearby.

Intense! Jackson, is content with his job, his career his animal charities, his inmate fire program and his dog. He think he wants for nothing. Ayen, is a domestic partner abuse victem convicted of the attempted manslaughter of his husband. Ayen, is given a temporary reprieve with the inmate firefighter program. He is grateful for the opportunity to escape prison life for awhile, but then he's thrown into Jax's orbit and his esteem issues overwhelm him. Jax is equally attracted. The uncertainty, the seeming impossibility of any relationship, the complexity of a past abusive relationship and the outcome of Ayen's case, plus the intensity of firefighting class, draw us into a reading that is not ligh or easyt. Good character development, excellent adventure. Great descriptions you can almost smell the atmosphere and feel the heat. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Jackson is a firefighter supervising a prisoner learning program. Thanks to the author for a unique set-up and setting in the mountains. He "adopts" a much younger prisoner, Ayen, who seems vulnerable and out of place. They are attracted to each other, but both know it is totally inappropriate. As the details are revealed, we love these guys so much! Both come from lousy families, but Jackson has had more time to find his own people, and he goes to them for help to free Ayen from an unjust conviction. They get involved despite knowing better and get away with it! Ayen's backstory is truly awful, and we root for him to come into himself and allow Jax to love him.
My only problem with the book is some poorly written bits, poor grammar and word choice at times. These things distract me from the story.

I loved Jackson (Smokejumpers Book 5) by Eve Riley. Ayen was an inmate in the firefighter program for inmates. Jackson was the leader of the program. They instantly had a connection. Jackson couldn’t understand why someone as gentle and sweet as Ayen was an inmate. When he learns the truth he’s determined to do everything he can to help his case. Ayen was in a bad situation and meeting Jackson has opened his eyes to real love. He can’t get his hopes up but he wants to. Jackson made a mistake but he won’t lose Ayen. I loved the storyline and the characters. I would definitely recommend this book and the series.

Eve Riley always has me excited for her new book. I wait in anticipation of who she is pairing with the smokejumper and how their lives are going to be changed. Always for the good, but with struggles along the way.
When Ayen was selected for a SAC group to be trained in fire identification, there was something that drew Jackson to take an interest and keep an eye over him. The circumstances of his incarceration were suspect and led to further investigation.
I couldn't put this book down as I was worried about Ayen's safety.

I loved this book! Even though it's wildly inappropriate that Jackson, in a position of power, made advances to a vulnerable adult inmate Ayen in his fire fighting program. Jackson is so tender and delirious of the smaller, gentler Ayen that brought out his protective side. This book brings out your own feelings for justice and to see these two get all they deserve. You are left with happiness and joy for them and the wonderful Roxy. I received a copy of this book through Booksprout and this is my voluntary opinion.

"Jackson" is book 5 in the Smokejumpers series. I absolutely loved this book. There is instant chemistry between Jackson and Ayen. And as I have come to expect from a Eve Riley book, the story pulled me in right from the start. There are both tender and tense moments as these characters work towards their happily ever after. I always look forward to books by this author and I cannot wait for what comes next.

Jackson is part of a team of firefighter who run a program with prison inmates and this is how he encounter Ayen.
Jackson had for years been part of a team of firefighters who run programs for inmate from the local prison. They aimed to teach them how to fight forest fires with the hope it would help rehabilitate them.Ayen was in jail after shooting his abusive husband and looked foward to this program as a way to spend some time out in the open away from the prison.

'Jackson had been my first taste of the forbidden fruit after having gone sober for so long. He’d sunk down deep into my bones and made a home there, rooted indefinitely.'

I loved this book. I like the premise of the two meeting through an inmate program- Ayen being the convict and Jackson the firefighter. There was chemistry and connection between them and I was soon hooked to the story. I enjoyed learning about both men and couldn't wait to see how they could form some kind of relationship. I also liked Tyson and was glad Ayen had at least one friend while in prison. 5 stars.

Really like the Smokejumpers series, always intense interesting stories. Jackson is a firefighter/search & rescue officer working in Sacramento. He also runs a program for nonviolent inmates at the fire training facility. That is where he meets Ayen one of the inmates. This story has so much going on; including unjust sentence, rescuing inmates, a sweet dog and finding love.
