There’s a long list of reasons why I shouldn’t crush on the sexy firefighter.

Logan Murray is not only my brother’s teammate, he’s more than ten years older than me and seems to curse my very existence. I shouldn’t care but I do.

Oh, and did I mention I’m now the nanny to his twin daughters? I need this job and I can’t risk messing it up.

But the more time I spend with the single dad makes me think that his growly exterior might just be hiding something more.

I’ve always been taught not to play with fire. But for him, it might be worth the burn.

"I still wasn't sure what I had to offer, but there was no denying I wanted the chance to show her."

⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was a really quick and easy read.

I loved Logan pretty instantly, and loved the little grumpy x sunshine thing he was so determined to keep up. You know, for appearances sake. Even if he was terrible at it.

I adored Izzy becoming part of the family, and the two twins loving on her instantly.
It was a really special relationship, that was really nice to see as it evolved, as well as her relationship with their father.

"He was everything I'd ever hoped for and more. And I was intent on showing him exactly that."

The pacing was well done, while also having a really quick rhythm.
The slow burn burned (get it? it's a firefighter romance. It's funny)
While a little predictable, there were still some suspenseful moments, and I ate up every minute of it regardless!

This is my first AJ Ranney book, and I'm sure it won't be the last - I need to know what happens after that epilogue!

Thank you, AJ Ranney, and The Author Agency for the opportunity to read this eARC!

⭐️ 5/5 stars –Grumpy single dad. Sunshine nanny. Slow burn that actually burns. The spice hits, the banter slaps, and the emotional payoff is worth every simmering glance. Add a subplot that quietly hooks you for the next book? Yeah, I devoured it.

🌶️ 2.5/5 Spice Rating –It’s open door and explicit, but this one’s a slow tease—not a page-after-page of panting. You’ll get the tension (and boy is it thick), a little sexting, a lot of “we shouldn’t,” and then one scene that fully delivers. Think less smut marathon, more “finally letting go after weeks of eye-f*cking in the kitchen.” And yes… he praises. You’re welcome.

🖤 1/5 Darkness Rating – This one’s light on the heavy—no major triggers, no gut-punch trauma arcs. There’s grief, yes, and some emotional weight (he’s a single dad with real feelings, okay?), but it’s handled with care and stays mostly off-page. Basically: feels, not devastation. You’re safe to swoon without bracing for emotional damage.

What I Loved:

The tension. Like, set-the-kitchen-on-fire tension. The way Logan tries (and fails) to keep his cool while Izzy just exists? Delicious. I also loved the found family vibes—the twins are actual scene stealers, and Izzy sliding so naturally into their world made my heart melt. The coparenting angle was beautifully handled too. As someone from a divorced home, seeing it shown in such a healthy, respectful way felt surprisingly healing. And the banter was Fantastic. I’m a total sucker for sharp, flirty back-and-forth, and this book delivered. Add in that emotional payoff when Logan finally lets go? Yeah, I was all in.

The Story (No Spoilers!):

She’s the sunshine nanny who swears she can handle anything—except maybe her older brother’s grumpy best friend. He’s a single dad, a firefighter, and walking, brooding proof that self-control is a damn shame. She’s totally off-limits. He’s emotionally constipated. And yet… here they are, sharing a house, parenting chaos, and enough tension to burn it all down. There’s banter, babysitting, a little backyard sports seduction, and a whole lot of “we’re just keeping it professional” lies. Spoiler: they’re not.

Final thoughts:

This one has it all—grumpy single dad energy, sunshine-with-a-bite nanny vibes, and a slow burn that crackles from the first look to the final payoff. The tension builds beautifully, the spice is open door and explicit without taking over the story, and the emotional core is solid without ever dipping into heavy drama.

The writing is clean and confident—no fluff, no filler, just smart pacing, believable dialogue, and fantastic banter (which we know I’m a sucker for). Plus, there’s a subplot simmering beneath the romance that definitely adds intrigue and has me side-eyeing the next book like, okay but when?

Burning, tender, and just the right amount of filthy—this one’s going on the re-read shelf.

I love a good age gap, brother’s friend, firefighter, so I ate up Logan & Izzy’s story! Logan’s determined to ignore her and his attraction to her…until Izzy gets hired as the nanny and she’s suddenly in his house. That touch of forbiddenness increases the tension, and I loved watching these two give into their feelings. The suspense kept me on my toes, and I immediately need the next book to find out what happens. I loved Izzy and the girls, I loved Logan as a growly papa bear, I loved the camaraderie with the guys, and the relationship with his ex. Really enjoyed this one, and I’m excited for more!

Logan, the grumpy firefighter, and single father of twins, has a busy schedule. Between a crazy work schedule and being afather, he doesn’t have time to date. However, Izzy, the nanny his ex-wife insisted on hiring, is pure temptation all the time. There was a reason he didn’t want to hire her.

Izzy is such a sweetheart. Beautiful, younger than Logan and a baker too. The twins absolutely adore her and she switches between the two households to maintain consistency.

I love the relationship Logan has with his ex. They co-parent well and she encourages him to pursue Izzy.

This is definitely a slow burn, but I read in an afternoon. I couldn’t put it down.

Thanks to AJ Ranney and The Agency for choosing me for an ARC review.

I love these two. I had high expectations for this book and as always AJ Rainey delivered. Logan and Izzy are adorable. This book is single dad, nanny, forced proximity, brothers teammate, age gap, truly all the best tropes put together. I've been excited to learn more about Logan since Recklessly Yours and Bravely Yours. And again definitely did not disappoint. Logan is grumpy and sandoffish as he tries to keep his distance From Izzy... after his ex-wife unknowingly puts him in an awkward position. His overprotectiveness and the love he has for Izzy is so sweet. Cannot wait for the next book!

Logan is a firefighter who is also a divorced dad with two daughters. Izzy a 21-year-old who is working as a nanny and is also the sister of one of Logan's co-workers. Izzy is hired by Logan's ex wife to nanny the girls going back and forth between the two, but she has had a huge crush on Logan for a long time. This is a slow burn but a great read, its so amazing!!

Playing with Fire is the first book in the series Half Moon Lake Heros. Logan is a single dad with twins and firefighter. Izzy is his teammates sister and his twins nanny.

This was a cute, fluffy romance that was such an easy read, I finished it within 24 hours. It was low stakes, low drama, with a few feelings but no deep hard FEELINGS, we just graze the surface.

The slow burn of the romance was fun, and Logan and Izzy had some cute banter “Grumpy Papa Bear”

The pace of the book was really well done and has been set up well for the next book in series.

This was a great book to start the Half Moon Lake Heros series off!

His Unexpected Second Chance at Forever -
Logan’s attraction for Izzy had him turning into a sourpuss, as he couldn’t pursue her because of the bro-code, so finding out his ex-wife had employed her as the nanny for his kids, made him even grumpier. Izzy’s initial interactions with Logan were awkward as he always had a scowl on his face, but she noticed a change in him the more time they spent together, which ignited her attraction towards him.

The sparks between Logan and Izzy grew stronger and led to them finally acknowledging their feelings for each other, but not everyone was happy with their relationship. Luckily, Logan and Izzy defended their relationship, which ultimately convinced everyone they were meant to be together. Unfortunately, Logan’s actions nearly derailed their relationship, but a discussion with Izzy’s brother made him realise the error and immediately rectify the problem, which gave them the opportunity to work together towards the life they wanted.

This forbidden romance story has enough scorching-hot tension to leave your panties wet and enough angst and suspense to have you on the edge of your seat in anticipation, guessing who the perpetrator is. If you are looking for an entertaining story that can help you escape for a few hours, then grab a copy of this book now.

ARC Review

This book had a lot of my favourite tropes (single dad, fire fighter, nanny, age gap, brothers best friend) and I ate everything one of them up with Logan and Izzy!!

Logan has developed feelings for Izzy so he is less than impressed when his ex wife hires her to be their new nanny for their twin daughters. Izzy’s attract to Logan only ramps up (especially when she sees him topless fixing a car) but will Logan finally give into his desires and let Izzy in.

Logan was succcch a good single dad. His co parenting relationship with his ex was so amazing, they were actually like friends who wanted the best for each other it was such a nice dynamic to see! He was also very growly and grumpy (to Izzy) but really it only made him hotter. When he finally took charge it was fire (no pun intended) but I liked that he had open communication with Izzy.

Izzy was such a fun FMC! I liked that she had a stable job but was looking for a life and passion outside of that. Even though she was young she had a mature head on her shoulders and was probably more mature than Logan when dealing with certain issues.

Delicious quick read that I finished in one go because who can put down hot firefighters!

Book 1 from the Half Moon Lake hero’s series, and what a treat it was! Logan is the grumpy single dad firefighter, he’s divorced and has shared custody of the cutest twin girls. Izzy is the gorgeous sunshine nanny, 12 years younger and also the little sister to his best friend and colleague. After dancing around their undeniable chemistry and Logan trying to do the right thing, the slow burn finally burns! And boy does it get hot. No 3rd act break up, just all the love! Looking forward to book 2!

Rated a 3.5⭐️ but rounded up—

I am honored to have been chosen to read this as an arc. Being a fire wife, I was excited to read a good firefighter romance. This book was cute and easy to read. It felt a tad rushed at times, but overall was a good book. The ending was kinda rushed and just felt like the story ended without answers. Wish it would have wrapped up a tad better, but I don’t think that should take away from the rest of the storyline.

Overall, good book and I would recommend for anyone looking for a good firefighter romance that’s light and easy.

Ok, first off, I wasn't sure how I was going to like this book, but 10 pages in and I. Was. Hooked. Give me an age gap with a single dad and beautiful sweet babies any time. The MMC was cut like a washboard your granny used in the 50s, and the FMC was a sassy little firecracker. Top it off by making the MMC the FMCs brothers friend and fellow firefighter, and you'll be as soaked as all the buildings being set on fire are, after these men come to hose it down. If you're worried about the slow burn, the spice is worth the wait. Get ready because you're about to be edged to your hearts content with this blaze of a read.

The “forbidden” nature of this romance (the heroine is a nanny and the hero is a gruff firefighter who’s both a single dad and her brother’s teammate) creates delicious tension from page one.
The romantic chemistry simmers beneath layers of professionalism, loyalty, and the complications of working so closely together. The push-pull between duty and desire makes their interactions feel loaded with subtext, and when the sparks finally catch, it’s both sweet and steamy.
The small-town firefighter camaraderie and hints of found-family keep the emotional stakes high, while the romance itself unfolds like a dance neither quite dares to lead at first.

I absolutely devoured this book! Probably could have read it in a day but you know mom things happen😅

The story with Logan & Izzy had my attention from the very beginning. The only thing i wish was it didn’t end on a cliff hanger because i need to wait now to see what happens until that book gets released lol

The dynamic between Logan and his ex wife with girls shows that co parenting doesn’t have to be difficult when things end amicably. I liked that she was on board with Logan being with Izzy and the girls relationship with Izzy was cute and fun.

All in all i really did enjoy this book! The spice was good and the story was well written. The ending felt a little rushed but with the cliff hanger makes sense. Again i don’t favor books that end on cliffhangers especially when it’s not available to read right away but I will have to wait for the next one and reread this one again.

AJ Ranney thank you for allowing me to be an ARC reader! Loved your book! 👏🏼👏🏼

It just didn't leave any impression.

This was a brisk, cute, fluffy read with nothing surprising. Feelings don't go too deep. The beginning establishing them felt too "insta".and i didnt know why he liked her orher than shes pretty. The inner dialog about how she can't see why he doesn't like her and his inner thoughts on "what the hell am I thinking" and how he has a half hard-on every time he's around her just felt repetitive. And also I don't need to hear the s3xual turn on at every chapter. I've read so many with thoughts like this so it just became a story of which I've seen too many times at this point.

AJ does it again! I loved Izzy and Logan’s story - such a cute romance with a great mix of sweet and spicy. The build-up had me hooked, and once things finally heated up, it was totally worth the wait.

Giving this one a 2 star rating and even that might be pretty generous, mainly because I want to know about the arsonist and see what happens with the cliff hanger we’ve been left on. Book was a cute/fluffy read, spice is 1 🌶️/5 and I wish for a romantic suspense that there was just a tiny bit more drama. Other than that it was an easy read just not very hooking until the very end of the book

Playing with fire was a cute romance. It is a little fast pace, which isn't a bad thing. Only at times it felt like scenes suddenly ended. There were somethings that I wish would have gotten more in depth. I don't knock books down for insta-lust/love, so when it came to that in this book I didn't mind. I do love a good nanny romance, the banter was good. Playing with Fire left me wanting more.

2.5 rounded up to 3

Izzy is newly 21, living on her own, and trying to make ends meet. She didn't expect all of the additional costs on top of rent and groceries, and realizes she desperately needs a second job to keep herself afloat, and build back up her savings. The perfect job just happens to fall into her lap; being the nanny for a woman she works with and her ex. She forgets the ex is the broody firefighter her brother works with, who she once flirted with, but now only scowls at her as they cross paths. She isn't sure how she'll handle the job, but she knows it's exactly what she needs.

*****

I had really high hopes for this one, but it just fell flat. Nothing really happens in the book that leaves any sort of impression. We start off the story as if we should already know the characters and their pasts despite it being the first novel in this series. From there, they simply exist. Time passes abruptly and oddly, with scenes swapping where they are within a few sentences, or entire large events passing in one brief blip that it felt like I couldn't get grounded in the story and was looking at it from an overview. There's so much tell and not show that I didn't really feel like I knew the characters, nor did they know each other. It felt like their "love" was just mutual attraction and Izzy being a good caretaker. They didn't bring any development on page that made them appear suited, and the story felt like it tried to bring suspense and depth but just stopped before it got there.

The entire book ends at an incredibly weird part as well, and felt like there wasn't really an HEA, as they're in the middle of a scene developing and then the book abruptly stops with the setup for the next novel. It was so incredibly odd to halt the book, and overall felt as if there wasn't really any meat to the story. It had overarching themes but nothing was really developed enough to have an impact.

Overall, if you're looking for a fluffy read with nods to some suspense, but no emotional investment needed on your end, this one is for you.

*****

“Logan Murray was looking at me like a man dying to taste forbidden fruit. Could my sister Angie be right? Was this why he was always so cranky around me?”

I took to Logan right away and absolutely enjoyed the grumpy-sunshine dynamic he stubbornly tried to maintain—mostly for show, even though he wasn’t exactly convincing at it.

Izzy’s integration into the family was beautiful to watch, especially with the twins embracing her from the start. Her bond with them, and the connection she formed with their father, grew into something truly special as the story unfolded.

I really liked the dynamic between Logan and Izzy. Their story was perfect; the pacing was perfect. I loved that he called her Sweetheart and she called him Papa Bear. Logan is a dream boat of a man despite having daddy issues. There was a portion of his backstory that mirrored what was happening (trying not the giveaway any spoilers) but I feel like that was a missed opportunity to really home in the tension and angst a bit more, with him trailing in his dads' footsteps and his feelings towards his dad...

"He was everything I'd ever hoped for and more. And I was intent on showing him exactly that."

This was a sweet, lighthearted romance that made for an effortless read... The story kept things relaxed and uncomplicated, with a touch of emotion but nothing too intense, no triggers to name. The only comment I have is that this book is being marketed as Romantic Suspense but it in reality has maybe 5% of suspense and it's not solved. You still don't know who the antagonist is at the end. It didn't feel suspenseful in any way throughout the story, as the issue didn't come to the Homefront until like 90% of the way through and was quickly resolved., I was hoping for more suspense, this was relatively low in comparison to the last AJ Ranney book I read, Recklessly Yours.

Still going strong in my single dad x nanny trope era.

If you're in the mood for an easy read with no drama, healthy co-parenting and open communication, Izzy and Logan's story will be perfect. Not only do these two get along great, but they also seamlessly get along with the ex and the kids are fun and entertaining. There are a few bumps in their love story but they were more a learning experience they had to work through at their own pace. This story is sweet, a little spicy and just very easy reading.

Firefighter Logan needs a babysitter who can not only get along with his 5 year old twins but also have a flexible enough schedule to be split between his home for half the week and his ex-wife's home for the other half. With his hectic schedule at the station and his ex working hospital hours, it's a tall order to fill.

The answer to his prayers happens to be his secret crush, Izzy. His teammates younger sister, who is a temptation he's been trying to steer clear of.

The little bit of push and pull was fun and I liked that it wasn't dragged out. They fell into a relationship without a lot of fuss and I liked that. It gave them a lot more page time as a couple which isn't always the case in romance. These two really did have a great relationship that flowed easily and they fell into cute domestic bliss. Bliss that was only interrupted do to a little mystery arsonist that comes too close to home.

Overall a good read 👍🏼

Logan Murray is a single dad firefighter who is trying desperately not to fall for his teammate’s much younger sister, but when his ex-wife hires Izzy to be their twins nanny he knows he’s screwed! Izzy can’t help the pull she feels but really doesn’t want to risk losing this job. She’s always been taught not to play with fire. But for him, it might be worth the burn.

Holy tension, Batman!
Logan & Izzy are like magnets in the best possible way! Logan is trying to juggle all the things: find someone reliable to watch his girls, battle serial arsonist fires that keep popping up in their small town, and not fall for Izzy. You can feel his turmoil & I’m here for all of it! Alice & Nikki: absolutely precious! The relationship with his ex, stunning! As someone from a divorced home, this was beautiful to watch how they worked together!

The banter? *100% chefs kiss!* It had me snickering and smiling every time. I loved it!
Logan’s mouth… oh this man!🔥

Half Moon Lake and A.J. Ranney are new to me and I have to say, I’M HOOKED!! This book flowed so beautifully. Believable dialogue, great pace, fun characters, and a wonderful addition of intrigue. The Half Moon Lake FD crew is top notch & I cannot wait for the rest of the series!! The cliffhanger left me questioning everything I was thinking regarding the “who is doing it.”

I definitely need to go read A.J.’s backlog! I love connected characters!

𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 was such a fun and quick read, and I devoured it in no time! If you’re into slow burn romance with just the right amount of tension and heart, this one will definitely hit the spot.

From the start, the attraction between Izzy and Logan was impossible to ignore. Their chemistry crackles, but Logan is doing everything he can to hide and resist it—and for good reasons. He’s a single dad juggling his responsibilities, teammate to Izzy’s brother, with a career that’s full of danger. But once Izzy steps in as the nanny to his twin daughters, those carefully constructed walls of his don’t stand a chance. I loved watching them fall for each other, and honestly it had me grinning through so many scenes.

One of the things that really stood out to me was how refreshing the dynamic was between Izzy and Logan’s ex-wife, Maggie. There was no forced drama, no petty jealousy—just mutual respect and an unexpected but really wonderful friendship. It was such a nice change of pace to see women supporting each other in a romance like this.

On top of the romance, there’s this mysterious background thread of an arsonist at large, and it weaves into the story in a way that adds tension without overwhelming the heart of it. It hits close to Logan and the people he loves, and it definitely kept me turning the pages.

Overall, Playing with Fire delivered on all fronts—romance, emotion, mystery, and even some sweet family moments. I’m seriously excited to see where things go in the next book!

This is the first book I have read by A.J. Ranney and I'm hooked! I can't wait to continue this series. I was pulled into this book from the beginning and I didn't wan't it to end! I fell in love with these characters so easily!

Logan is a divorced firefighter with two twin daughters. His ex and him are in need of a nanny but have been having trouble finding one that isn't older and more reliable. When his teammate brings up his sister Izzy he changes the subject because he likes her and he can't have her. For one it's his teammates sister and two he's in his thirties and she's in her twenties. But when Maggie his ex says she hired a new nanny his world is about to get rocked!

Maggie works in a medical office and decides to be a nanny for Maggie on the side since she can work around both jobs easily for hours. Logan is always hot and cold around her and she just doesn't understand why he acts that way with her but slowly she starts to think he might have feelings for her.

These two are so much fun with their banter. The slow burn is worth what eventually happens. You will laugh, swoon, have a little mystery and be left with a good ending. I loved Maggie and Logan's relationship. It's nice to see ex's be there for each other and not hate each other. I loved how Izzy takes to his kids so easily as well. All the guys on thie firefighter team were fun to get to know and I can't wait to know them better. This is definitely a must read book andI highly recommend it!

Thank you The Author Agency and A.J. Ranney for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.

A grinning from the first page brother’s best friend romance! With a plethora of reasons why it’s a bad, bad idea to act on any kind of attraction, which makes Logan a complete cranky nightmare and Izzy a confused and a little hurt nanny, a building tension that sets this read on fire and makes Logan even crankier, brings out his possessive side, and has him out of his mind, this is a little comedy in how hard Logan fights it, a lot sweet and swoony in how perfect these two fit together, and has a fun and sexy vibe that gives you a light hearted feel good romance with a little hint of danger, plenty of adorable, and lots of those aww moments when it hits you that everything you could ever want is already right there, and it literally just makes you happy with every page.

This is one of those reads where it’s so balanced, everything is so smooth, that it gives you nothing but that heart filled pleasure of a great romance the whole way through and I love that. Logan and Izzy are both great characters, there is a full cast of fantastic side characters, Logan’s twins are beyond adorable, and I am super impressed with how well the relationship between Logan and his ex is portrayed as well as how it showed the support for their new so’s. Which is actually a really big selling point for me sometimes, since I am one of the lucky ones who has a great relationship with my ex-husband and his new wife and kids and I love when a book can show how natural and easy it can be sometimes to have that. As the first book in a new series I have to say I am all in and I can’t wait for more!

I love getting to go back to Half Moon Lake & focus on the firefighters!

There is an apartment in Half Moon Lake that is magical. Anyone who moves into it finds their perfect match pretty soon after they finish unpacking their last boxes 😂.

I’m a sucker for firefighters & a single dad/nanny romance. This one checked all the boxes and then some! Izzy is a ray of sunshine. She blows right into Logan’s world with her crop tops, cut offs, and wins over his two daughters before he can even take a breath. Logan is a grumpy, single dad who gets along great with his ex, but is as about as emotionally available as a rock.

Izzy is everything he could ever want, but she is also very off limits since she is his teammate/friend’s little sister. After some moments where you could cut the tension with a knife he finally gives in…and once he does that man is ALL IN for Izzy.

I loved the banter between Izzy and Logan, but I also loved the relationship she was building with his ex and the girls. Despite some slightly heavier topics being discussed this one stayed pretty light and up beat & felt pretty fast paced despite being a slow burn. We get to meet several more firefighters and Izzy group of single friends. I know I can’t be the only one hoping for certain pairings among this group!

If you read previous books by AJ you already know…but there has been an unusual amount of arson fires set in Half Moon Lake. We may have found out a little more about what’s going on there, but the case is definitely not solved & I can’t wait for the next book to see what else we’ll learn.
