In a world dominated by war and the relentless pursuit of truth, how far would you go, what secrets would you keep, to protect that which you hold most dear?
Elyria was once home to the gods.
It has been a millennia since the gods were imprisoned in Meru by Fate, but wisps of their magic remain embedded in the blood of humans—some with the ability to wield that magic, and others with the ability to store it. Rulers of free territories are forced to ally together--or fall alone--in a bid to protect their territories from a growing conflict between the descendants of Kaos and Solace, one that threatens to boil over completely.
The Truthsayers and the Keepers—descendants of Kaos and Solace—receive messages from their imprisoned gods in the forms of truths and visions. Each group acts on the perceived will of their god in a bid to eradicate the other, paving the way for the gods to escape Meru and continue their fight against Fate.
General Rohak d'Alvey sold his soul and traded his family's beliefs for a seat at the Warlord's table, but his position is growing increasingly uncomfortable; especially as he uncovers powers and knowledge his closest friend has hidden for decades.
Lex d'Talionis, a Mage in the Warlord's army, has command of both Pain and Pleasure—an anomaly in Elyria. Awakened as a teenager, Lex devoted his life to service in the Northern Territory's army under General d'Alvey, but he holds information of his own—information that could cripple the Warlord's plans.
In Hestin, a Warlord-allied territory, Miss Ellowyn d'Aelius prepares for her Awakening ceremony where she will discover not only her magical affiliation but also her designation. Her parents-the Lord and Lady of Hestin-and brother are all some variation of an Elemental, and she expects to emerge the same. But when an elusive Priest of Fate appears to conduct her ceremony and she begins to have strange dreams of a cracked landscape plagued by a magical storm, Ellowyn starts to wonder if there is more to her heritage than her family is telling her.
Further south, the war between the Last Keeper and the Warlord spills over into the Borderlands—a territory with no allegiance—and Faylinn, a scholar and healer with no magical affinity and no memories, is sucked into a conflict she tried to avoid. When her village is destroyed and her mentor disappears without a trace, Faylinn must decide whether to stay and help her people rebuild, or accompany General d'Alvey back to Vespera in a bid to unearth the secrets hiding in her memories.
Kaos and Solace grow restless and the Children of Fate must decide what they will do when the gods once again walk in Elyria.
**This book contains significant dark fantasy themes and adult encounters and is not recommended for those under eighteen. Please read the content warnings listed at the beginning of the book or on the author's website before reading.**
I had zero expectations for this book, all I knew was there’s a pet cat in the story and that’s enough for me to read it. Imagine my pleasant surprise when it turned out to be 𝐀𝐁𝐒𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐘 𝐏𝐇𝐄𝐍𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐀𝐋!
This was a 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐲 book with an 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 and a storytelling so smooth and vivid that it literally felt like I was transported inside the book and seeing the events happen with my own eyes.
This was set in Elyria, a 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐫 and populated by 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, loosely resembling that of the 𝑨𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒓 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝑨𝒊𝒓𝒃𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓. The world used to be the God’s and Goddess’ - Kaos and Solace - playground, until those Gods were imprisoned by Fate, with the help of the Bondsmith. Basically 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬, Fate, Bondsmith, Kaos, and Solace, influencing the world by moving humans that worship them.
I greatly enjoyed getting to know each character! We have 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐎𝐕𝐬, Ellowyn, Rohak, Faylinn, and Lex, each of their personalities slowly emerging each time I read through their points of view. I love how complex and deeply 𝒉𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏 they all are despite having magical abilities.
𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒏𝒐 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆, 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒇𝒍𝒂𝒘𝒆𝒅 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔.
There was a good amount of graphic violence depicted on-page, but none of them felt gratuitous. Instead each act of violence felt so raw and painful. I could feel my throat tightening as I helplessly watched horrifying acts get committed, because it mirrors human society too closely.
Those in power and in-charge are committing actual war crimes for the good of the many, justifying each blood spilled as a necessary sacrifice to eliminate the other side. Both see each other as the evil that needs to be eliminated no matter the consequences.
“𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅.” - Sarah J. Maas, ACOMAF
There’s a 𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐭 if you squint hard enough, but this is really 𝐬𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐧. You can already see which characters have the greatest chemistry with whom, but this book was mostly a setup for future possible romance.
One of the most powerful characters in the story, the one the entire book has set up as the 𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 in the book, 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒆𝒏 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚 in Shadow and Bones.
How do I hate someone with that vibe???
Since the author mentioned “𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔” as one of the book tropes, I am 𝒉𝒐𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 he’s the enemy to lovers…😂😂😂 If not, I basically thirsted over an actual villain so what does that say about me??? HELP‼️‼️‼️
The plot and characters are both complex and nuanced and 𝑰 𝒆𝒏𝒋𝒐𝒚𝒆𝒅 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌. Of Secrets and Solace did not read like a debut novel AT ALL, because this is an actual work of art, and definitely a hidden gem in the fantasy genre.
To the author: Please do NOT stop writing, because if this is what you have for a debut, I cannot even imagine what other amazing literary art you can produce down the line.
I was so so very lucky to receive an eARC copy for Ellysa’s debut novel!
I am marking this as including spoilers as I don’t think I could adequately describe some of the wonderful elements in this story without including some pertinent information.
Of Secrets & Solace is a slow-burn dark romantasy with morally grey characters (my favorite) and Ellysa did all these elements perfectly <3
We are introduced to a very unique magic system from the very beginning. We are initially introduced to a “girl” who is the great granddaughter of the Keeper of Memories. She is tasked to store memories so they are not forgotten. We are shown in real time how her people and family are brutally murdered and how she is going to seek revenge and retribution for her people’s deaths. As she watches and retains the memories of those in her city being murdered at the hands of various mages, she is told to remember this and “remember me”. She is now the last Keeper of Memories.
I appreciate so much the way Ellysa showed us past and current events that occur rather than just telling us. I think the way these deaths were shown was done in a very powerful way. As she watches her people die, she also watches their life lights go out, in which the room is now nearly pitch black.
The magic system in this book is unlike any I have ever read before! We meet many mages and vessels throughout this novel. When a mage and vessel bond, it allows the mage to use the vessel as a storehouse for their magic. There are two types of bonds: “True” bonds and “forced” bonds. True bonds are chosen by the gods, think soulmates! True bonds are rare. The connection between a mage and vessel prevents a mage from overdrawing their magic and becoming sick with what we learn is called “mage sickness”. Mage sickness generally plagues the lower-class mages who generally only have access to crystals and not vessels. Once upon a time, keepers and their followers sought to eliminate truthsayers because they believed that no one person should be able to know the possibility of futures and be able to act upon it to make it a reality. Eventually people rebelled against the keepers, causing them to flee and hide. There is also one last truthsayer/final magical descendant of Kaos- Lord D’refan who is seeking to eliminate the remaining keepers that still operate from the shadows.
Throughout the book we are introduced to many characters: Ellowyn, Lord D’refan, Lord Torin, Peytor, Rohak, Faylinn, Lex, and many more.
Here is a brief description of some of characters, but not all, as there are quite a few:
• Girl: Last Keeper of Memories, watches as her people are brutally murdered by mages. • Ellowyn: Bond specialist. Daughter of Lord d’Aelius. About to have her awakening ceremony that occurs at age 25. Resides in Hestin. Family is hiding a keeper, Jarius. • Lord D’refan: Last truthsayer and last descendant of the god, Kaos. Referred to as the Warlord. Lord of Vespera. • Lord Torin: Ellowyn’s betrothed. Ellowyn is also able to meet with Torin in her dreams. He is from the Southern territory. • Peytor: Ellowyn’s brother • Finian: A close friend of Ellowyn’s and also having a secret relationship with Peytor. • Rohak: Works with Lord D’refan. Waiting for a true bond. Helps rebuild Faylinn’s city when it is destroyed. Invites Faylinn to join him in Vespera where D’refan resides. Dislikes forced bonds. • Faylinn: Lives in Isrun, a small border territory between North and South. Never awakened (magicless), and found a niche in healing. Grew up with no memories, no magic, no family. Has scars and knows something traumatic happened to her but is unable to recall the specific events. Able to do blood magic via runes. She also has a cat named Cotton. Has a thirst for knowledge. Rumor has it the “Bondsmith” but she disagrees and just says everyone can use runes, that she just knows more than others. • Ben: Faylinn’s friend/romantic interest. Suspected to have mage sickness. Earth mage. • Lex: Resides in the North stationed in Vespera with the majority of Lord D’Refan’s mages. Bonded to two vessels: Ilyas and Sasori. Ilyas is his true bond and Sasori is a forced bond. Has a traumatic past. • Ilyas: One of Lex’s vessels. True bond. • Sasori: One of Lex’s vessels. Forced bond. • Bondsmith: Sometimes a man, sometimes a woman, came into the world to provide balance between Kaos and Solace. Created a bond between the two gods. Now each person had someone(s) made for them. These bonds provided love, protection, acceptance, and ability to draw magic from each other.
• Truthsayers: Agents of Kaos • Keepers: Agents of Solace.
I am so impressed with the way Ellysa was able to introduce various complex elements to this story. I think the romance being slow burn in the first of this series really allows us to focus on the complex magic system, world and character relationships allowing me as a reader to truly understand what and why certain events occur and the various relationships between each of the characters. How all the various character’s subplots merge together is truly impressive and while the complexity of this story may seem confusing at first, the journey is well worth the read when it all comes together 😊
If you have not put this book on your TBR, I would highly recommend you do so! If triggers are a concern for you, I would definitely suggest checking the author’s trigger warnings. Happy reading! 😊

I don’t even know where to begin.. how do you put into words something that rips you apart and puts you back together, all in one book?
Ellysa’s storytelling is nothing short of genius. The emotional intensity, the intricate, high-stakes plot, and the sheer depth of these characters?! TOP TIER. This isn’t just a story you read, it’s one you feel. Every chapter gripped my heart tighter until I was sobbing through the pages, aching for these characters, for this broken, beautiful world.
The tragedy, the weight of it all, is devastating. But also, so necessary to the complexity of the narrative. The way Ellysa handles pain, love, loss, and resilience is nothing less than masterful. Every moment is purposeful. Every emotion is earned.
This book destroyed me, in the best way. 5 stars aren’t enough. I’m in awe, and I’m so ready to dive into book two.
Holyyyyy shit - yep, easily 5 stars. This was flawless, vivid, emotive, GENIUS, singularly original, and surprising in the best way. Seriously INCREDIBLE. If you love a dark, EPIC high fantasy with morally grey/flawed characters, a complex magic system, intricate world-building, and a gritty, v graphic (check tw) war-stricken world centered around gods/fate, you’ll absolutely love this. Literally going to be thinking about how complex and ingenious this book is for a while; the way the author SEAMLESSLY introduced multiple pov’s to the point where I felt an emotional connection to all of them?? That’s so hard to do with one character, let alone SEVEN!? And how they all interconnected?! Beautiful. Also, the way I truly did not know who the villain was for a bit (and still can’t fully confirm)/or know where the plot was headed at times was straight up masterful. MASTERFULLL. It totally flipped traditional romantasy and high fantasy romance on its head and I devoured every word. The plot and characters completely stole the show and were the main drivers of this book (again, flawlessly done), with the romance being perfectly set up for an explosion in book two. And while the romance was more of a subplot, as a romantasy girlie at heart I truly didn’t find myself missing anything because I was completely captivated by the world and storylines. And again - I just know we’re being set up for the *best* slow burn romance ever bc the things that have already been set up?? I’m entirely feral for. And lawd, don’t even get me started on the reveals; THIS is how you show and not tell readers. The way I have SO MANY theories and was gasping aloud at the plot twists. I need answers like I need h2o my friends. Plus the ending?! The EMOTIONAL PAIN?! I cried many times, one of which being in the first 50 pages. Y’all, that’s an absolute first for me and just speaks to how expertly written and emotive this book is. Clearly I’m still reeling from this but just WOW. Beautifully, beautifully written, 10/10, Im obsessed, no notes. And I’m diving into book 2 immediately.
What to expect: - high / epic fantasy - very dark/graphic at times (pls check tw) - intricate world building - meddling gods / fate / chosen one(s) - multiple POV & love stories - bonds / bonded - light vs dark vs balance - political intrigue & war - slow burn romance - complex magic system: elemental magic / truth sayers & memory keepers/seers - emotional pain (the best kind)
Firstly I want to say to please take the TW in consideration. The content is very graphic and reader discretion is adviced. If there are subjects that you would find triggering, I wouldn’t recommend ignoring that. You know your triggers and your mental health is important. Secondly, the book shouldn’t be rated badly, because someone ignores the TW. Those are there for a reason.
But let’s talk about the book.
In the beginning we have a proper explanation about mages and vessels for this specific story. I appreciated this a lot considering every author creates their own universe where things might work a little differently than someone is used to.
We are thrown directly in the story and the first couple of chapters are very descriptive. There is gore and blood and not too little of that. I personally loved that it didn’t start slow. When starting a new series, the world building in the beginning can be rather slow til the book picks up in pace. Here, I didn’t feel like that whatsoever.
The reader is introduced to various characters and we have multiple POVs. Some might not like that either, but again for me it felt like it was easier to get to know the new characters better. I like to dive in their minds and see them at their core and not just as perception of another character.
This is a slow burn where he falls first. And when I say slow, I mean slow. I can’t wait to read the next books and follow their evolving relationship.
However, there are definitely spicy scenes and I appreciated how well written those are. Spicy scenes are not that easy to write I assume and there are certain aspects that can be viewed as very cringy. In this case tho I loved every part of them and almost wished there would have been more.
The last chapters had me in a chokehold and I wasn’t able to put the book aside. In a turn of events we are left with a cliffhanger.
Altogether I enjoyed reading this book extremely and will be counting the days til I can read the second one.
Especially considering this is Ellysa’s debut, I have to say this is amazing. I’m looking forward to read more of her work.
The book was amazing! I was hooked from the very first chapter. I couldn’t put the book down! I loved the whole story. I absolutely loved the characters
I want to thank the author, Ellysa Marin for sending the eARC of this book to me a lot. It was a truly wonderful experience. ✨
This book is a dark romantasy, with really slow-burn romance, filled with tension. Oh, and did I mention that the main characters are in their 30s? And they are truly acting like adults; I love it. So this book as I mentioned is a slow-burn romantasy, this means it is also a fantasy, which needs world building and this book’s world building is amazing. Before we start the book there is a little description of the places of Elyria and different kinds of powers, which gives us a head start to the book, so we don’t plunge blindly into a completely unknown world. But still, world building is the biggest “weakness” in every fantasy book series, because the first book HAS to build the world for you, but it really pays off. Because of this I needed a little time to get lost in the book, but not for too long, because the author gives us exciting events throughout the story. We have different POVs and because these characters are so different, everybody can find their favorite. They all have lovable sides and a not so much lovable one, they are not black and white, they’re all very colorful. And when I say slow burn, it’s really slow, but the guy falls first. I like slow burn, but the really slow ones not so much, but in this book, I really don’t mind, because the story progresses flawlessly this way. And I really mean it. There are serious moments but there are also funny, light hearted ones. It’s a long book, but it doesn’t feel like that. Oh and the spice is just chef’s kiss. It’s so well written, it never felt cringe. It was just soooo good. Don’t forget this book has content warnings, so take it seriously, because this dark fantasy starts out with a pretty dark scene.
All in all, I really loved this book, and I can’t wait to read the next one, because so much is happening and we have so much to find out yet, and I’m so excited about that. I’m really happy right now, because this fantasy is just amazing and I truly mean it. So check it out and give it some love, because it really deserves it. 💖
I am beyond impressed this was a debut novel. This book is so unique in everything about it. I loved the multiple POVs, the amazing detail in everything, how well it was written, the magic system, the Gods and ruling families, the characters, the story telling. This book immediately sucks you in and keep you on the edge of your seat. You never really know what’s going to happen.
If you are a lover of dark fantasy, I highly recommend this book but please, please check trigger warnings! It is dark and gory and extremely detailed.
I cannot wait to see where the second book goes, I need more ASAP!!
I couldn’t rate this book higher for two reasons: first, the two main female characters are written like flighty, air headed, pre-pubescent, petulant children, instead of the 25 and 34 year old women they are. It was exceedingly annoying at points and took me out of the story. When a 34 year old stomps her feet and throws a fit because she has to wear shoes, and both she and the 25 year old stick their tongues out and “ blow raspberries” when they’re upset? Seriously? I almost didn’t finish the book. I’m glad I saw it through though. That leaves my second reason: this book was a couple hundred pages longer than it needed to be. There was far too much over-description of places and scenery, describing the same people in great detail multiple times, and dragging on parts of the story that were literally just filler. It could do with some good and thorough professional editing.
Still enjoyed the story and look forward to reading a sequel, though I hope the characters are better/more maturely written to fit their ages.
FIVE FREAKING STARS AND ALL THE SOBBING TEARS Ellysa congratulations on such an amazing debut. Your writing style is one I had no clue I was missing, but now crave like none other.
I am typically a romantasy reader, but this is a fantasy with a romantic subplot. let me say it again, this is a fantasy with a romantic sub plot. THIS IS A DARKKKKKKK FANTASY, and I do not say that lightly. There is an abundance of trigger warnings so dont be the a-hole who ignores them, then doesn’t enjoy the book because you were thought u were above them.
To not be too too spoilery, heres the nitty gritty: OSAS follows our four main characters Ellowyn, Faylinn, Lex, and Rohak throughout the war between the Truthsayers and Keepers. Both groups are essentially at war yo destroy the other at the behest of their respective dieties (Koas and Solace).
Koas and Soalce have been trapped for a milenia by their parent Fate and semi sibling the Bondsmith interact and live freely. Koas and Solace begin using dreams and visions to incite war and overall doom and gloom in efforts to crash down their prison walls and be free. Alois, our warlord and the Matriach are the closest living descendants of the two deities and are essentially their puppets. How much is their own decision making though?
There are no heroes in Elyria, just those trying to succeed. In the battle between the truthsayers and keepers, who will you side with? What morals will you bend until they break? and what actions will the be one that crosses the line too far?
Character banter is top tier, i am still conflicted on who i want to be with who. i would go to war under the rohak any day, I would die for ellowyns closet and a gossip session, i wish i was by faylin and cottons side reading and researching, and sweet lex i just wanna hug you. oh oh oh alois why why why do i feel the way i do for u- im so deranged.
Ellysa will make you love to hate some characters, but hate to love them at the same time. I was seriously out here questioning my morals over the decisions made. I laughed, i cried (okay i sobbed into a bottle of wine), i gritted my teeth, and cringed a bit, but overall enjoyed the helluva ride.
All of that being said, I felt all the emotions with this one and I was sucked in and entranced by the world of Elyria and the unique magic and bonding system. There is quite a lot of world building, but Ellysa tosses you into the eye of the storm and you are immediately swept up into the swirling Kaos. Your gonna be confused- just go ahead and accept that and you will be slowly get some of the puzzle pieces, but not them all. just keep going ur gonna get it.
seriously check the trigger warnings provided at the beginning of the book. your mental health matters and there are very sensitive and grueling topics involved in this story.
thank you so much ellysa, for allowing me the opportunity to ARC read your brain child. OSAS is such a wonderful introduction to the world of Elyria and I look forward to exploring what comes next! —————————————————————————————

Thank you to Ellysa for sending me an eARC of her phenomenal debut!!
Y’ALL I’M OBSESSED!! 10/10, no notes. Seriously the best book I’ve read in a while. A top favorite for this year for SURE!!
**Before diving into the review, PLEASE read the content warnings for this book before jumping in should you choose to read it. This book does not shy away from darker elements and definitely shows the pain and rawness of a world at war.**
Of Secrets and Solace is a dark fantasy that follows multiple characters in a world torn apart by two warring factions. We learn so much about these factions primarily through the POVs of:
• Rohak (a general of Lord d’Refan) • Ellowyn (a socialite destined for more while living in a territory allied with Lord d’Refan) • Lex (a Mage in Lord d’Refan’s army) • Faylinn (a talented healer from the borderlands) • the Girl (the nameless last Keeper and Matriarch of Solace)
I was nervous about the multiple POVs but good gods is Ellysa talented at weaving them all together!! Masterfully done and they all seamlessly flowed from one to another. The characters themselves are so well-developed and multi-faceted in such a complex world. Speaking of world, the setting and world-building is so well done!! The magic system is complex and interesting without being overly confusing and Ellysa does a really great job showing the reader what’s happening instead of telling.
Overall, this book is incredible and I’ll be thinking about it for awhile. The plot is engaging and fast-paced, the multiple POVs are woven throughout so beautifully, and I absolutely loved that everyone in this book is morally grey/morally ambiguous depending on which side you’re looking at them from. They’re all simply doing what they think is right based on the information they have and it definitely challenges you as the reader to think about what you would do in their shoes.
I received a copy of this book from the author and am honored to share this completely honest review!
I am in awe and I want to cry, but in the best way possible. How many days until the sequel comes out? I don't know, but omg am I anxiously waiting for it.
I have so many questions, but still feel satisfied with the ending. Although intermission might be a better way to describe the ending because I know it is about to go down in book two. If you do not like cliffhangers, wait for book 2 and then devour both back-to-back!
This book is so well-written and immersive. I feel like I've know about Elyira all of my life, not that I was just introduced to it when beginning this book.
I feel the same way about the characters. Not one second of this book feels like you're reading boring backstory. Ellysa builds the world and creates rich characters effortlessly and weaves everything we need to know into the story seemlessly.
Being presented information about Elyira before the story began, was incredibly helpful. It made Elyira feel familiar instead of foreign.
I highly recommend Of Secrets and Solace. I also HIGHLY recommend reading the content warnings because it has Game of Thrones level violence and gore. There's some very spicy spice as well!
Now, stop reading reviews and start reading this book!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
For those who like fantasy, adventure, romance, magic and gods this book may be for you. I was very intrigued by the concept of this book and how fate plays a large role in this series and how fate is portrayed.
Without spoiling I think Elyssa Marin did a great job with the world building of Elyria. The book is unique in its own right where the different levels of truthsayers, keepers, mages, and other people in this world. The book is multiple POV so you get to see how each character develops throughout the story. Their is definitely some slow burn as well building up so I’m excited to see how that develops in book 2, especially with our grumpy general.,
Note: This book may not be for those who have TW of abuse, profanity, sex, depression, death and violence.
This was such a fantastical story with intriguing characters, a unique magic system, and a thought provoking plot. With multiple POVs and location changes right off the bat, this is a little difficult to get into and understand what's going on at first. However, once you finally grasp who everyone is and how everything is connected, this is an intense storyline with some interesting plot twists.
This is also definitely a fantasy story that requires you to read the trigger warnings because it does get very dark and graphic in some places. Overall, I really enjoyed it. The characters were multifaceted, and I'm really looking forward to seeing where the story leads them all.
Holy biscuits Batman heed those trigger warnings! This is a meaty story that does not shy away from blood and violence!
The plot! I don’t think I’ve read a debut author who has achieved the intricacy and detail orientated political systems that have been produced in this book! I LOVED the world and the way it feels so real while being firmly planted in a fantasy setting.
The introductory chapter made me worried I was going to struggle with the magic and lore but once the present day chapters began I was sucked right into it.
The characters are well rounded while still learning and growing throughout the book. There is depth to the older characters and an innocence with the younger that give contrast to the people but also provides alternative views of the war and makes you question who and what you should believe.
I especially loved that it encapsulates the grey areas of war. There is definitely no good and evil, each side is capable of torture and crimes that make your stomach turn.
IF YOU DO NOT LIKE GORE AND VIOLENCE THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR YOU! I do not shy away from graphic scenes but even I was like holy hell that was intense. Multiple times! It’s a refreshing break from authors who shy away from vivid battle scenes.
The slow burn is slooooooooooow. There wasn’t really any romance in this book but it has set up a few couples that I’m very interested in seeing where they end up later.
I adore Lex. I need more of that backstory ASAP! The ending… how dare you! I will definitely be recommending and continuing this series!
Thank you to book sirens and Ellysa for allowing me to access an early copy for review. I am leaving this voluntarily.
Argh unfortunately DNF 26% I was really into it until we got to part 2, i don’t like Ellowyn at all - it felt like I totally different book, something just wasn’t quite right The characters are supposed to be in their mid 20’s early 30’s and honestly i am not feeling that at all. Also not into the multi pov the story is complex enough and adding 4 different pov it’s too much and probably unnecessary. I prob would push through but doesn’t feel this is for me (seeing a repeat of the legacies series from a mile away no thanks) and book 2 having close to 800 pages meh i am good, have other books to read. Might come back at some point but doubtful.
This book absolutely blew me away. Please be aware this starts out DARK literally right away so be prepared going into it. But it definitely sets the tone for this dark romantasy in doing so.
There are probably at least half a dozen POV’s and while that’s not usually my favourite style I really liked it in this book. Every character has a clear voice and I was genuinely interested in every POV (sometimes you get those characters where you dread reading their chapters- this didn’t happen here for me)
There were so many aspects which made me excited to read. The plot, the magic system, the relationships- I absolutely could not put it down because I needed to know what would happen next.
I had a deeply vested interest in every characters fate and you really don’t know who is safe in this book and I LOVE that. The stakes are high, the plot is complex and the world is well developed. I can’t say enough good things about this book. Just READ IT especially if you love an epic dark fantasy.
First off, I would like to thank the lovely, Ellysa Marin, for shamelessly sliding into my DMs and asking if I would be interested in reading her book, Of Secrets and Solace. I am unbelievably so grateful and so glad that you did because this is one of my top reads of the year now🖤
Aside from a few things Ellysa briefly explained, I went into this book completely blind and OMG. Immediately hooked from the beginning. I struggled to put this down and knew very early on that this would without a doubt be a 5 star read for me. I especially loved how Ellysa included in the beginning of the book the map, territories/ruling families, family tree, major characters, affiliations & affinities, and the journal of Tuatahi. It was so intriguing and just made me that much more excited to get into the story to discover what all of these meant.
Of Secrets and Solace is a dark fantasy with truly phenomenal world-building. Being able to picture this book in my head was insanely easy and really brought the story to life. A world at war and humans with magical abilities, what could go wrong? You will meet four powerful beings in this story: Kaos, Solace, Fate, and the Bondsmith. The book also has four main POVs of Ellowyn, Rohak, Faylinn, and Lex.
This book does entail some graphic scenes, so please be sure to check your TW/CW before reading. As always, your mental health matters 🫶🏻
"there are no heroes here, only flawed characters"
Ellysa Marin's Of Secrets and Solace is a riveting exploration of a world steeped in magic, conflict, and deeply held secrets. Set in the ancient land of Elyria, where the echoes of imprisoned gods still linger, the novel deftly weaves together a story of loyalty, power, and the sacrifices made in the name of survival.
From the outset, the novel plunges the reader into a complex and richly detailed world where the descendants of two powerful gods—Kaos and Solace—are locked in a deadly struggle. The world-building is superb, with Marin creating a land where magic is not just a tool but a legacy, passed down through bloodlines and wielded in a fight that could determine the fate of all.
The characters are a highlight of the story, each one deeply flawed yet compelling. General Rohak d'Alvey, a man who has sacrificed his own soul for power, finds himself ensnared in a web of deception and hidden truths. His journey is one of inner turmoil, as he grapples with the weight of his choices and the loyalty to his closest friend, who harbors dangerous secrets. Rohak's internal conflict and his evolving relationship with Lex d'Talionis, a Mage with the rare ability to command both Pain and Pleasure, add layers of tension and intrigue to the narrative.
Ellowyn d'Aelius's story, on the other hand, provides a fresh perspective on the discovery of one's true self. Her Awakening ceremony, expected to be a straightforward reveal of her elemental magic, instead sets her on a path of mystery and self-discovery. The dreams she experiences are haunting and beautifully written, adding an ethereal quality to her storyline.
Faylinn's tale brings a grounded, human element to the sprawling epic. A scholar and healer with no apparent magical abilities, her story is one of resilience and determination. As she is thrust into the heart of the conflict between the Last Keeper and the Warlord, Faylinn's struggle to reconcile her lost memories with her present circumstances provides a poignant counterpoint to the larger, more fantastical elements of the novel.
Marin’s writing is lyrical and evocative, capturing the reader's imagination with vivid descriptions and well-paced action. The themes of war, loyalty, and the burdens of power are explored with a depth that resonates long after the final page is turned. The narrative is complex, with multiple perspectives and intertwining plots that keep the reader engaged, though at times, the sheer volume of information can feel overwhelming. However, this complexity also enriches the world of Elyria, making it feel like a place brimming with history and untold stories.
Of Secrets and Solace is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy. Marin has crafted a story that is both grand in scope and intimate in its exploration of human emotion. It’s a tale of secrets kept and truths uncovered, of power gained and lost, and ultimately, of the choices that define us. Elyria is a world that feels both familiar and new, filled with characters whose journeys are as compelling as the world they inhabit.
Golly! This book was A LOT to take in, in the best way.
My head was spinning for a bit, with all the different POVs from characters, and I wasn't quite sure how they related or why we were seeing so many different points of view.
HOWEVER, I quickly learned that this world is much more complex and full of secrets than I originally anticipated.
The way it began, and the way the continued, was wild.
I really loved how the first part of the book was a bit of a backstory to the second part, and I loved that I stayed in the dark on *how* exactly it was and what happened to the character from the first part. The way the story develops is so interesting, especially since we see it from so many different points of view.
Each main character's personality is so distinct, and their background, upbringing, and talents, so incredibly different, it made reading incredibly quick. I couldn't stop wanting to know what happened next, and the anticipation of knowing there are secrets and ulterior motives, but not knowing when they are going to be revealed or found out? Insanely frustrating, but, of course, a great way to breeze through a book. I kept thinking, at every turn, that a secret or motive was going to be revealed, but instead, it's just chaos for the characters.
Not only is the development of the main characters riveting, but we see development for the supporting characters as well, which keeps the story well balanced.
Upon finishing, I'm still not entirely sure who the villain is, and, for once, I'm not upset about it. I am itching for the next book to come out early next year, and am going to get my paws on it ASAP so I can find out what happens next! At this point, I'm so invested in the romance, the lives, and the whole entire WORLD, that I know the details will be niggling the back of my brain for months to come.
Very well done!

Ellysa's debut novel took me on a thrilling ride through a dark fantasy world where gods and goddesses once ruled freely until they were trapped by Fate and the Bondsmith. This world-building is layered and complex, with every event manipulated by powerful forces—Fate, the Bondsmith, Kaos, and Solace—who control humans like pawns on a chessboard.
The story is told from several perspectives, primarily those of Ellowyn, Rohak, Faylinn, and the Girl. Initially, the shifting povs were a bit overwhelming and confusing, but each character's distinct personality and storyline quickly pulled me in.
The book's tone is intense and unflinching, especially during some graphic scenes (the first part was a shock to my system ngl) that had me pausing to catch my breath. If you’re sensitive to gore or dark themes, take the content warnings seriously. This novel doesn’t shy away from diving deep into the darkness from the very beginning.
What makes this book stand out is its innovative magic system—truly like nothing I've read before. The slow-burn romance is also a welcome addition, allowing the plot to fully explore the magical elements and complex character dynamics without rushing into relationships. This pacing is perfect for setting up a deeper connection in the sequel, where I hope the romance will finally blossom.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book and am eagerly anticipating the next installment. If you’re a fan of intricate fantasy worlds filled with adventure, magic, gods, and just a hint of romance, this is definitely one to add to your reading list. Ellysa has delivered a fantastic debut, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!
I want to thank Ellysa for the ARC for this book, it's an honor getting to know such a talented author. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily

✨✨✨✨✨✨ Wow this book was seriously incredible!! The world building was done perfectly so you were never lost and the writing definitely made my brain feel like I was in the book with these characters! You will get 4 POVs of our main characters Ellowyn, Rohak, Faylinn, and Lex that just give you such a different feel for all their personalities. You will fall in love with all of them for many different reasons. The true bonds and forced bonds was amazing to read about and I really enjoyed because I don’t think I’ve actually read anything with that concept yet. For me this was a bit of slower read than normal but I truly think it was just because I was soaking up all the details! Overall I really enjoyed reading this one! Definitely check your triggers.
I truly got lost in the world of Elyria and definitely recommend that you should too!

Thank you so much for sending me a copy for an honest review in my own words.
Wow. I’m almost at a loss for words. This book has taken over my life for the last few days, I could NOT put it down. Please make sure to check the content warnings, which are detailed at the beginning of the book.
This book was HEAVY. The content was at times extremely dark and emotional, as is any book that touches on the horrors of war. What I found the most interesting and unique about this story was that I truly didn’t, and still don’t know who the true heroes and villains are. The book is told from multiple POVs, which forces the reader to get to know every main character and see them as human. This makes it so hard to decipher which side of the war we should be empathizing with. Perhaps that’s the point though; maybe there is no good side or bad side, just two sides that think they’re in the right and fighting for their own people.
I found myself loving and rooting for every single character (well, almost). The trauma and turmoil that most of these characters go through made me love them even more. I cried and raged right along with them.
I am absolutely OBSESSED with this story. This has definitely become one of my favorite reads this year, and I cannot wait for book two. I have more questions than answers at this point, and I am so excited and terrified to see where it goes!
'He can have Fay, but Faylinn is mine. I shook my head to clear those possessive thoughts.' -my grumpy grump Rohak aka General D'Alvey (slightly obsessing over him)
Book 1 Of The Children Of Fate series. Darkish Romantasy Need to me author

"I need you to always pick the more difficult path, the one that you don’t want to choose. Because, eventually, the sun will shine again, even though the darkness will seem everlasting.” -The Matriarch
I'm so glad I stumbled upon this book. Amazon did me right this time with their 'you may also like' recommendation. Winning! Perfect timing too since book 2, Of Kings And Kaos, comes out May 21st. I CANNOT wait!!!!! Squeeling for when that hits my kindle.
Anywho, I feel like I'm still in this Elyria bubble that I just wanna stay in for a while longer. I truly could go on and on about this book. HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking this one out if you love an epic high fantasy read! Thank you Ellsya for creating this insanely unique world!!! 👏🏻
This book is DARK. Like, "read the trigger warnings ⚠️ and expect extremely graphic depictions of horrendous acts of violence" dark. This book has vivid carnage and savagery comparable to A Song of Ice and Fire series.
However, unlike that series there are light, happy, and funny instances that help break up the dread and utter despair. I had my heart broken no less than a million times reading this book and it even made me cry! You don't know me like that, but I'm not a crier.
What that means is, I found the writing impeccable! It really pulled me in and allowed me to get attached to characters- then it shattered my heart into a thousand pieces. The imagery is so vivid that I felt like I was right there and felt what the characters were feeling. There are multiple POVs, mostly written in first person but there are a few third person chapters.
There is not a clear division of good or evil that I can find. Maybe an evil and a lesser evil? So much foreshadowing that I'm chomping at the bit for the next book. I didn't expect to get sucked in like I did, but I definitely did! Unlike A Song of Ice and Fire that left me feeling completely dreadful, I'm promised that there will be a happy-ending! Although, I'm told it gets worse before it gets better 😭
I highly recommend this book and I cannot wait for the next book! ⚠️ READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS ⚠️
I don't know about this particular book being a romance or slow burn but I can imagine this series will be as a whole.
I found the storyline and magic system to be very unique which is nice in the realm of fantasy.
I pre ordered the second book because I can't wait to see where this story ends up.
This book had me misty eyed a few times and just for that gets 4 stars
The begining was a bit slow and confusing for me personally but it does pick up.
The use of "the girl" was a bit grating in the beginning and almost lost me but boy am I happy i held out.
I loved the different perspectives very much. The mystery had me hooked half way and I can not wait to find out where this all goes
This book is for you if:
✔️ you like mystery ✔️ you don't mind cliff hangers ✔️ you enjoy stories with the gods in it ✔️ if you like runes ✔️ tasteful romance that unfolds at a slow burn that will have you pining for them to finally be togther
This was a refreshing read for me with the mystery and unique characters and storyline.
I am looking forward to book 2! Definely a recommended read with keeping in mind that it takes time to unfold but when it does it's awesome 👌
Tropes: Multi POV Slow Burn A Cottage & A Cat Found Family Gods & Goddesses Magic
*received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
This book started off SO strong. Before starting, I definitely recommend taking a look at the trigger warnings as the story starts off dark and is extremely descriptive. From the first few chapters, I knew that I was going to be in for it. I was devastated at everything that I was reading. The story does follow different POVs, but for each person, devastation follows. There was not a single person who was having a happy moment. If they did - it would be gone soon after.
I don’t want to get into it too much, since I don’t want to spoil it, and this story was definitely the foundation for the series. We get a look into each different major character for the story line and the author did an AMAZING job at laying that foundation. She was descriptive of anything she could think of. From the characters themselves, the scenery, the magic - it was all taken into account and I didn’t have a single question by the time I finished the book.
I cannot wait to see how the rest of the series plays out. I was trying to gauge who would be making the pairs of relationships, and I have my guesses, but I cannot wait to see how it all unfolds!
OF SECRETS AND SOLACE is book one in The Children of Fate series by indie author Ellysa Marin and I’ve never read anything quite like it. It was wholly unique, absolutely gripping and truly thrilling. To say that I loved it would be an understatement on par with calling James Cameron’s 1997 Titanic “good”.
This is a dark high fantasy with romance and Marin is a masterful storyteller. Her ability to craft shockingly morally complex characters through perspective shifting is unparalleled.
This is not a light read or for the feint of heart. It’s raw and painful. It’s beautiful and enlightening. It’s hope and it’s heartbreak. There are no heroes here — only flawed characters and opposing perspectives that challenge the reader’s perception of truth, motivation and morality.
There is romance. There is spice. But with multiple POVs that understand & experience the world so differently — who and what you’re rooting for is constantly evolving.
This is a masterpiece for fans of dark fantasy romance, multiple POVs, morally gray characters, political intrigue, meddling gods, conflicting ideologies and intricate world building!
Very interesting, very original story. Particularly like the well thought out magic system, and it is easy to see that the overall story is planned and I do not expect to stumble into contradictions later. More than once I couldn’t wait to start reading again when I could next because I wanted to see what was happening and was disappointed when I had to do other things. Real life can be such a drag for my preferred reading life 😂.
Only 1 small thing that isn’t really a critique, but did throw me off at first. The book is multi-POV, but each POV is written first person. Not necessarily a bad thing, and I did eventually get used to it by the end, but in the late mid part of the book, there are a number of varied POVs back to back which I did have to stop and look back to remember which POV I was reading a couple of times.
Overall, it was a fantastic read and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
