This just went downhill, and I don't even wanna give a detailed review of it. Some SPOILERS below!
It's kinda meh to know that all the problems faced here by Manuel (45) and Athena (23) were caused by her mother. She was made out to be the bad woman here—well, technically, she is—but behind her stupid decisions was a hurting woman who lost the love of her life.
It just made me scratch my head as to what the author wanted me to feel. Should I be glad she paid for what she did, or should I be sad that she didn't really live her life and was just going with the flow because she lost her sense of purpose? Not even Athena, her own daughter, made her feel good about living.
And her comeuppance was a tad dramatic for my taste. Her confessions made her sound like she's just a woman who has lost everyone in her life, and readers should be more open and understanding of what drove her to do those dumb things. Maybe I should sympathize, but her choices were really bad, and I can't find it in me to forgive her or see where she's coming from. 🤷♀️
Moving on, the age gap was too much for my taste, and the fact that Manuel dated Athena's mom in the past added to the uneasiness I'm feeling. It was a relief that he didn't sleep with her, because double-dipping isn't something I can stomach (unless it's a taboo novella). Also, him calling her his "young wife" made me even more uneasy. Like, dude, I get it; she's young, and you're way too old for her. That fact is effortlessly living rent-free in my head, even if I don't want to.
Anyway, the whole book was underwhelming for me. It was insta-love at its finest, but it didn't work. The similarity between all the men in this fictional world is kind of scary; if they're not V-card holders, they're manwh*res, and there's no in-between. Usually the older ones are the hoes, but they always have the same visceral reaction towards their FMCs with just one look. And in a heartbeat, they're all willing to do a 180 to become a one-woman man. Sometimes it's hard to understand what made them have that change in personality and lifestyle. How they figured out the FMC is different from all the others is something I'll never know. But I guess readers just need to be fine with it. 🤷♀️
While this book didn't work for me, I hope it finds the right audience who'll enjoy and appreciate it more than I did.
Book info: - Age gap (22) - Insta-lust then love - Violence, death - Attempted murder - No cheating, OMD, separation - OWD (FMC's mom dated the MMC in the past, she also tried to seduce him twice in the story) - Surprised pregnancy - HEA (1 yr later, married + daughter)
Since the first time i´ve read my first Eva Winners book, i knew that i would read everything that she writes. This book is amazing, i loved Athena with all my heart, she is one of my favourites characters in the world, i love how she is strong, even with a dark past. She has a big heart and is not scared to show it, i love the friendship in this series, i think is one of my favourites parts. Manuel falls so hard and fast, it was like the first time that he sees her they are going to be forever together, I LOVED THEM SO MUCH.
I received an Arc copy in exchange of an honest review.
Really enjoyed this story and loved that the heroine was a bit different than the usual. No shy, virginal miss here. She was brassy, a bit of a partier, and definitely no wilting virgin. Totally appreciate the departure from the standard. I really enjoyed her and her fantastic girl gang who where tearing things up, lol. The storyline was action-packed, moved quickly, and had a dash of suspense keeping my attention all the way to the end. Can't wait to see what's next!
Athena is a strong fmc, with a dark past. There was healing and Manuel was always there. The plot was amazing. Lots of secrets and twists. The spice was great too. If you want a darkish mafia romance…pick this one up! ♡
I really like how Eva writes stories. There's action, mystery, and exciting, sizzling scenes. It's so engaging to read that you’re surprised when the story ends. I enjoyed reading the story of Manuel and Athena. Unputdownable!
** ARC was generously provided in exchange for my honest review.**
Athena and Manuel are THE go-to couple for romance readers who are “here for the smut and not the plot”. This is the perfect naughty little book for when you’re in-between reads. It’s relatively fast-paced but it’s undoubtedly smut-a-plenty! 😉🤤
The reason I say it’s more smut than plot is because this story heavily focuses on Athena’s and Manuel’s developing relationship— from their cheeky flirting, to their sexual escapades, to eventually navigating through genuine emotions. Whilst secondary subplots were developing in the background. You can expect an “Act Three” climax, where most of the mafia elements involving the action and suspense, plot twists, and overall expansion of this interconnecting world take place.
With how things unfolded and concluded, this book is very much a lead-in for multiple new storylines revolving around secondary and newly introduced characters who have made an appearance. And trust me when I say, it’ll have you bubbling over with excitement at what’s to come in the future.
✔ Mafia Romance ✔ Age-gap with “Daddy” kink ✔ Alpha hero falls first ✔ Sassy yet vulnerable heroine ✔ Secrecy and deception ✔ Complex familial dynamics ✔ Found family
Athena and Manuel are fire and together they’re absolutely combustible! The air crackles whenever they’re in near vicinity of one another that you can’t help but perk up in anticipation of their next spice-induced exchange. What’s not to love about this book?!
The secondary cast of characters were equally entertaining. They brought about another element and added much needed depth to the overall plot. There’s a mixture of lighthearted banter and immense curiosity in the air as the plot thickened.
Winners has bestowed her readers a mafia world with a range of personalities, from the sweet and innocent, to the bubblies and the crazies, to both the morally grey and straight-up villainous characters (and not the good kind) that kept the page turning and I, wholly invested. I’m always in awe of these characters effortlessly evoking emotions out of me. I love the unexpected plot points, the twists and turns, and the constant doubt of these characters’ motives.
Although it can easily be read as a standalone, I strongly recommend starting the Thorns of Omertà series from the beginning for a fuller reading experience. Just like all other dark, mafia romances, this book covers dark themes and sensitive matters that some readers may find triggering. Be aware it contains graphic violence, child abuse resulting in PTSD, kidnapping, and death. It’s intended for readers 18+ only.
All in all, Athena and Manuel’s story was red-hot, swoony, and completely loved-up. It’s another amazing addition to the series that expanded an already intricate world-building with a new layer. Athena is a cynic when it comes to love. Manuel is passionate and an all-out romantic. You can take a guess at who had a stronger influence in the end.
There’s just something so gripping about Winners’ writing that I know I’m always going to enjoy one of books, whether it’s erotica-heavy or a more in-depth, fleshed-out, and highly complex narrative. Either way, this was no exception. If you enjoy reading about mobsters, steamy hook-ups, and are a fan of the “daddy” kink, add this one to your TBR! It’ll leave you smiling for days on end.
“Thorns of Desire” is the story of Athena and Manuel.
Another age gap romance, this time between a confident heroine who is a writer- and has a one night stand with the super sexy older hero. There’s a complex history of him dating her mom, loads of family drama, good amount of sexual tension and gymnastics, a surprise accident, and a happy.
I did enjoy how confident the heroine was- and that the hero didn’t sleep with her mum. That being said, this felt like a filler book and the plot was similar to an other few I had read in this series.
The only thing we really knew about Athena in the previous books was that she was a romances author and was extremely loyal to her friends. But we finally learn about her in this one. We learn something horrific happened to her when she was a girl and that she really didn’t have anyone growing up. Not until she meets her friends.
She has a very complex relationship with her mother. One that makes her think love doesn’t really exist. At least not for her. Their relationship plays more of a friendship over a mother daughter. One that makes Athena wish it was different. I was not a fan of her mother, and we quickly learn that Athena had secrets that were kept from her. Including why she was in danger.
When she meets Manuel explo$!ve sparks fly between the two. Manuel pretty much falls hard and fast for her right from the moment he met her. And he had no clue who she was. But we find out they had a connection that went beyond that first meeting. He makes it his mission to keep her safe and find out why she is being put in danger. Without spoiling, all I can say is a lot of secrets are revealed about her past. All of Eva’s men are the type to 🔥 down the world to protect their woman. And that is part of why I love her books so much.
The steam was very hot and my new favourite nickname for a man is now Paparino (daddy) 😘
There were a lot of twists that happened that made me wanna push quickly to learn how and why. And many I did not see coming. Like always there is a great set up for not just the next book in this series but a few others that we know will be happening in the future.
Eva Winners does it again with "Thornes of Desire." This book is packed with action, suspense, and steam that will keep you turning pages long into the night. The dynamic between Manuel and Athena? My heart! 💖
Manuel, the brooding mafia boss, is relentless in his pursuit of Athena, and it's absolutely adorable to see him break down her walls and show her that he'll always be there to care for and love her. Their chemistry is just perfect and explosive. 🔥
The story is super engaging and hooks you right away, while the characters totally grab your attention. Eva Winners has a knack for creating worlds that are intricately connected, and her writing style makes it easy to get lost in the story.
I love her writing so much and the way she connects everything in her books with the rest of her work. It's always a treat to see those little connections and Easter eggs that tie everything together. If you're a fan of action-packed, suspenseful romances with a lot of steam, this book is definitely for you! 🌹
'Eva is back and is as desirable as ever. Dark and dangerous, this is a mafia-fuelled adventure filled with all we know and love about this brilliant author. Hold on tight, whiplash is guaranteed' - The British Bibliophile

Thorns of Desire by Eva Winners is the fifth book in her Thorns of Omertà series, a standalone dark, suspenseful mafia romance read. This follows on from another standalone and book four in the series, Thorns of Silence . Start the series today with the duet of Thorns of Lust & Thorns of Love , followed by book three, Thorns of Death for the full Thorns of Omertà experience.
Just over three months have passed since we immersed ourselves in the world of Eva Winners with Kinks of a Billionaire from her Billionaire Kings series. It was a read that didn't quite hit the mark compared to the others that had come before it also in that series, so I was keen to see if Eva's next release--in or out of it--would pick back up where I know she shines the best. To find out if this read has done just that, please read on further down this review. Skip to the end or read every word, you'll find out just the same.
If you've followed this series from its conception like I've been lucky to, you'll know everything about the Thorns of Omertà , who's in it and who is connected to it in this mad mafia world. We've journeyed quite the way to get here, dipping into other series' and standalones as Eva grows this fictional world. The focus now shifts to two not-so-new main charters who are spearheading their own story. Manuel and Athena, to be specific. These two have been seen here and there as timelines have woven through one another in other reads, but here is where their own story takes centre stage and we can see how exactly they got to their happily ever after but more specifically, who and what tried to get in the way, along the way.
As each new book added to the series, the Thorns of Omertà has grown. The men remain the same, but each has since been joined by their soulmate--even if they didn't want or ask for one--, and that in itself is an adventure. Watching each gruff, grumbly, growly alpha male slowly turn soft on the inside for the lady who has managed to turn his head has been nothing short of amusing to see. It happens to them all in the end and credit to Eva, she makes it happen differently each time. No two 'pin drop' moments are the same, so I always look forward to seeing how it will happen with each set of main characters in the next book.
Time to tackle Manuel and Athena. The Italian and the American, a tale as old as time. At least, in the dark romance/mafia world.
Manuel Marchetti was the devil in a Brioni suit. He's also the soul object and thought of a certain one night stand, unforgettable and unrelenting in the mind of anyone lucky enough to share a bed with him. He's also one of the many members that make up the hidden mafia empire that are the Thorns of Omertà. That last little nugget of information is something Athena learns far too late, coming at the wrong time but in the right place. One night was supposed to be one night, but fate laughs in her face at the notion. She wasn't meant to spend one night with this man, for she was meant to meet him again.
Fate and destiny team up when not too long later, Manuel is thrown back into Athena's path. History though, has a habit of repeating itself. After spending several more hours with him, she bolts once more from his bed. Was it the right thing to do? Maybe not. But in the moment when the pin drops again and you know that you're somewhere you shouldn't be, you leave. No matter how tempting it is, or how much he is, calling you to stay.
A man like Manuel Marchetti is simply off-limits, forbidden and dangerous to the core. If that's the case, why won't he get out of Athena's mind? It's natural to run away from danger but in this situation? Temptation is there to run to it. Her body and her soul only comes alive in its most trust form when she's with him. Hoping to never see him again has never panned out better, because the exact opposite is what Athena's got. He's everywhere she is. Wherever she turns and everywhere she went, there he is--stealing kisses in the shadows, making vows and promises across his beating heart while simultaneously painting the streets red with the blood of his enemies and anyone who dared harm his woman.
Manuel takes great desire--and pleasure--in pushing all of the buttons Athena has to offer. Daring not to stop, but to come back for more when she's riled. To her dismay--or rather, hidden joy--, his coming back for more left her willingly unable to stop him. She'd been there, done that. There's no resisting a man like him, Italian or no. There's just something about him, the man, that no one in their right mind would be able to resist. Period.
The day eventually comes when with a chance encounter, Athena is in need of his protection and lucky for her, he has the solution. Sweeping her way to safety to his beautiful yet remote Italian castle, she could feel her steely resolve crack more and more under both his blazing gaze and searing touch. Attempting to resist him here again is once more, futile. She and her body both caved for the Italian stallion.
With every day that passed the two of them by, Athena came to realise something. Out of the two of them, by the end of it all, she would be the one succumbing. Either by the secrets of her past that have been weighing her down for so long, or by his touch that consumes her both in her body, mind and soul.
I'm incredibly pleased to inform my fellow readers that this read did in fact, live up to the feelings I had of it before diving in. I felt like it was going to be a good read and a redemption from Eva's previous release--for my own personal reading tastes--, and has fully shown me once more why I'm glad that I took the plunge to start reading her many moons ago. The Thorns of Omertà series is one of my favourites from her, and across the dark/mafia romance genres as a whole, and my word did Manuel show why age is better than youthful inexperience. The man has got the goods, the balls--not in the way you're thinking, even though he does--and the everything that it takes to charm the fictional pants off both his leading lady and us as readers. I felt like I was the one needing a lie down after a reading bout with him. Ooft!
My only non-criticism which I have echoed in previous Eva reviews, is when something happens on the page, I like to see it played out. Namely when the plot takes a turn, or there's an announcement or something grand in nature, I like to see it happen on the page rather than talked about in abstract. Recapped. IF those moments had been included in this read--when you come across them, you'll know which ones I'm talking about--, it would have made this a five star read. Again, this is my personal taste and doesn't take away from the fact that this is one hundred percent a book that I think people should pick up. My tastes are my own and even despite that, I had a cracking good time getting to ride along with Manuel, Athena and the gang.
Eagerly awaiting what is to come our way from Eva next.
Eva's thorn series is full of spirited heroines which fits Athena perfectly. She's the romance writer of the group that finds her own Italian man at Isla's fateful fashion show. I loved that her hot older man, Manuel had a connection to her past. This book definitely had plenty of mafia secrets that kept me guessing and wondering who was friend or foe. Along with those secrets there's still plenty of steam living up to the book's title. Manuel is seriously droolworthy as he falls for Athena pretty instantly. But moreso he's protective and reassuring to her secretly soft soul. Athena is mouthy and knows what she wants going against the grain. But she had me chuckling with her comments and loving how Manuel embraced those qualities. I'm always eager for more from Eva and excited to see the next mafia man taken down by love
Manuel is a powerful man within the Marchetti family who is feared by his enemies but his loyalty to those he cares about is unmatched. Developing feelings for a woman is an experience he never wanted as it could be used against him however a brief encounter with Athena will change everything and he will do whatever is necessary to protect her.
Athena wants nothing to do with the life she left behind and she was beginning to believe it had happened only to find out that it wasn’t true. What was supposed to be one night with Manuel becomes so much more and even though she is cautious with what she has to face there is no one else she would rather have by her side.
Surprises that keep you guessing, suspense that keeps you on edge and two people who couldn’t be a better match for each other in every aspect of their lives.
This was a classic Eva Winners story with a great plot and steamy scenes. In this book, Athena stands one unforgettable night with Manuel Marchetti, the devil in the Brioni suit. They meet again at Isla's wedding and a series of events will mean that they will no longer be able to separate. Manuel is a hot italian daddy, the age gap is over twenty years, but really is not a factor on this book. The chemistry is insane.
I recommend reading the rest of the books in the series because they are interconnected with parallel timelines. But the events were not repeated from previous books when timelines overlap, instead that you get a new pov of the scenes.
Eva Winners is a remarkable author, and she's one of my favorite authors. I was obsessed with Manuel and Athena. The Thorns of Omertà series has been my favorite series that she's written, and each book in the series seems to surpass the previous one in terms of quality. This book was action-packed with lots of spicy banter and steamy scenes. We gained a deeper understanding of Athena's character and her tragic past. Manual was unwavering in his pursuit of Athena, and their love story was beautifully portrayed. I can't wait for the next book in this series!
Manuel (45) & Athena (23). Their chemistry is so strong that the huge age gap didn’t bother me.
It’s an instalust/love romance that has a fast pace. There are quite a few secrets surrounding Athena that even she ignores, which made things interesting although towards the end I felt they were rushed.
I liked both MCs despite their carelessness. He is protective and caring, and she is rather strong and no pushover. It was a pleasant read.
It was alright Regular organized crime/ mafia book The mother drama was a little OTT though Reading about her shit every other page was mad annoying I didn't see the point in the mmc having dated the fmc's mother though, it literally served no purpose other than lame drama, it was 2 dates, never slept with her then dumped her And it didn't even cause a drift between the mmc and fmc because the fmc knew about him she met him when she was younger.

I was introduced to mafia romance by Eva Winners, and I’ve never looked back. She expertly weaves intricate storylines full of plot twists, curveballs, surprising mafia connections, betrayals, and suspense. Mafia men have a fierce loyalty to their families, especially toward their women. When they finally fall, they fall fast and deep. They become obsessed quickly and are highly possessive and very passionate. I find these character qualities highly attractive, which is one reason why I love mafia romances.
Eva Winners writes this series as interconnected standalone stories, which is excellent for newcomers to her work. Any reader can jump in at any point and thoroughly enjoy the experience. Even so, the Thorns of Omertà series is best enjoyed in order. I love how they are all on parallel timelines, at least partially, so as each book unfolds, there are sometimes events you’ve already read about, but now you are getting it from a different POV. Sometimes, these little glimpses are eye-openers to the yet-uncovered secrets and missing puzzle pieces; other times, they are reminders of previous events that you may have forgotten about.
Every book in this series features one leading lady from a band of girls who have been friends and roommates for years. They ride or die together, and trouble seems to follow them everywhere. This friendship ties all of the stories together and brings levity and laughter into the dangerous and violent world of the Omertà.
Thorns of Desire features Athena, the friend who makes her living by writing spicy romance novels. Her leading man is Manuel Marchetti, uncle to Enrico, the husband to Athena’s friend Isla. Isla also has her own family connections to the Omertà. This series has many connections to keep track of, but that makes it more fun. The girls all have strength in their character and some sass about them, which their men find refreshing.
This is an age-gap romance, and it’s a big one; 22 years big. While I enjoyed the story, I didn’t necessarily feel the insta-love between Athena and Manuel as fast as they did. There wasn’t really anything particular that drew them together except for pure magnetism. Then, their connection between the sheets helped seal the deal. Neither was looking for a relationship, so what was it that made them fall head-over-heels at first glance? Whatever it was, it worked for them, and I enjoyed every minute. Their passion and love for each other formed a strong bond between them.
I didn’t find this story quite as exciting as some of the others in the series, but it had its own charm, and we learned more details about other players in the series. Those little nuggets are always a little shocking. One last story is yet to unfold in this series. I’ll be sad to see them go, but knowing Eva’s style, we may be lucky enough to get some cameo appearances of our favorite characters in future books to come.
