"Darkness fades when light...is allowed to shine."

As Shadowcast was a swoonworthy start to an epic romance, Lightshed is an appropriately deepening second installment to the Gateway Trilogy. I admire Grant's ability to put readers in the moment through engrossing details, yet still move the plot along with breathtaking intensity. The characters' choices have consequences that can't be reasoned away. They grow beautifully as war brews and fearsome enemies clash.

The intense and protective Mason strives to find the fulfillment he lacks. And Seria must discover if her inner strength and principle will be enough as the pressure builds. Will forgiveness and healing be possible amidst so much betrayal and bloodshed? Can purpose be found in the mess, or is their love too far gone? Find out in Lightshed!

I never wanted this book to end! The world that Crystal has crafted is truly exquisite. Reading this series gives me all the feels and reminds me of my young teen years when I would devour high adventure and fantasy novels. It has everything I want in a fantasy novel - lots of action, good vs. evil, forbidden love, beautiful redemptive arcs, and strong faith elements. I truly felt transported to another time and place!

Seria and Mason are among the best couples I’ve read in a long time! This is exactly why I love to read series - the ups and downs of the relationship, the character growth, and the edge-of-seat tension! The third book in this trilogy cannot come soon enough. 😂 I cannot wait to see what happens with my new favorite couple. Both Seria and Mason are presented as relatably real people with flaws - flaws that aren’t just mentioned but truly impact their storyline and drive the narrative. Their character development from the first novel to now has been amazing - especially Mason’s!

The side characters in this novel are not to be missed! Prince Eric deserves his own trilogy (hint-hint Crystal 😅). You can’t create an entire world like this and not have some amazing supporting characters. They are just as fun to read as Seria and Mason. Does that even make them “side” characters at this point? I also love how the struggle of good vs. evil is portrayed as it shows us how life is not simply black and white.

Long story short, pick this book up (and Shadowcast, the first in the trilogy) and read it! It is such a beautifully written Christian Romantasy that will be a favorite of mine for years to come!

If you’re looking for a Christian fantasy look no further than The Gateway Trilogy.
I absolutely loved the first book of the series Shadowcast. Then when I jumped in to Lightshed it did not disappoint. It was a wonderful story of redemption and God’s steadfast love, grace, and goodness. (Now, I say God but the name given to Him in this trilogy is the Lambient.) Despite not using the actual name “God” the story parallels the truth of the gospel beautifully.
The romance between Mason and Seria unfolded naturally all while we saw the struggles people face when trying to be unequally yoked. There are amazing lessons to be found in this story and I highly recommend this trilogy (at least these first 2 books since the third isn’t out yet) to those looking for a solid Christian fantasy series!

It takes a lot to make me like a book 2 in a series more than I liked book 1. It almost never happens. But it happened with Lightshed.

Though I loved book 1 (Shadowcast), this one has my heart. I won't say much because #spoilers if you haven't read it, but truly, this is such a beautiful story.

One of my favorite things about this book was Seria. Again, spoilers, but in this story our loveable, spunky heroine is faced with difficult decisions that threaten to shatter her heart. I'll let you read the book yourself to see what happens (😉), but let me just say that it made me love her even more.

And, in my opinion, the crowning glory of this book is #thatonescene. If you've read it, you know what I'm talking about. 🌄 (I got chills just thinking about it.) I've known about this scene since long before it was out in the world, yet reading it was just as moving as if it was new to me. (That's enough to make you want to read it, right? Yeah, I thought so.)

In conclusion: Read Lightshed. Read it now. Well, go read Shadowcast first, if you haven't, then come back and read Lightshed. (Am I being bossy? Good.)

Lightshed
The Gateway Trilogy #2
By Crystal Grant

The coveted Shadowstone is finally his. But what will it cost him?

This is the second book in The Gateway Trilogy and it opens with a glimpse into the past. We see again the incident that at its heart is the reason Mason Grey joined the troops of Emperor Jader. We don't see the death of Mason's brother, but rather the decision that resulted in a tragic mistake. We see it from Prince Eric's perspective and how his search for the Shadowpit had long-reaching consequences - pain and regrets.

We then move forward twelve years; Mason now wears the Shadowstone, and with its added strengths, he would make the Stewards pay for their actions. But one thing tugs against his mission of revenge and devotion to the Emperor - Seria Gayle.

Seria and Mason find themselves on the wrong side of the clash between their people. Both feel guilt about their feelings for the other and wish to bring the other over to what they feel is the right side of the conflict. This one line sums it up so well: How could something feel so wrong and right at once?

The coveted Shadowstone is finally his. But what will it cost him? This is the question Mason Grey must answer as he carries out the will of Emperor Jader, which is in contrast to his feelings for Seria Gayle. How can he reconcile his need for revenge with the love he feels? In a world caught in a destructive conflict, Mason and Seria find themselves at the heart of everything. This is a world you will want to visit more than once. Some layers and complexities slowly reveal themselves with each reading, allowing one to notice something new. Like when you finally realize something that has been out in the open forever, but it was lost in the surroundings because it was just there not flashy and showy, just present. This is similar. This series has an epic feel to it, and often, these are the stories that need to be read through with a desire to know what's next and, on the second time, a slower, more thoughtful enjoyment to savor all the flavors more fully.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Their choices will change everything....

I have been looking forward to Lightshed ever since I turned the last page of the first book in The Gateway Trilogy. Crystal D. Grant's characters and worldbuilding caught my attention and I was ready for more...

As hoped, Lightshed proved to be just as good as its predecessor. The worldbuilding was as vivid as ever and I felt like I could almost see it. The magic system is fleshed out even more in this second Gateway Trilogy book as Crystal D. Grant blends it pretty much seamlessly with a Christian perspective.

Lightshed has all of the things that you want to see in a good older-YA fantasy novel. From sword fights to betrayal to sacrifice to budding romance. The characters are also quite good as one can't help but love Seria Gayle and root for Mason to finally discover the truth before it's too late. Key themes of learning to trust God no matter what, doing the right thing even when it is beyond hard, and forgiveness as both good guys and bad guys make mistakes are central to the story.

I sincerely enjoyed reading the middle Gateway Trilogy novel and, just like the last time, I am champing at the bit to dive back into Crystal D. Grant's exciting fictional realm and find out what happens next to Seria, Mason, and the others...

Stunning Epic Fantasy

Y'all, reading this book was a long time coming (granted, though not as long as others). Shadowcast swept me away, and now Lightshed has taken me on a hard journey of truth and faith. The themes of truth, the pain and consequences of lies, and the power of choices are powerfully and excellently shared in these pages of fantastical and heart-rending adventure. An incredible, exciting, emotionally exhausting, and triumphant tale with with a wildly bittersweet ending. And this is just book 2. Excuse me while I go jump into the finale . . .

Do you enjoy fantasy? What about flawed characters? And how about a redemption story? Well, you'll find all of that in this second installment of The Gateway Trilogy. This is about good vs. evil, and decisions that have to be made. But will those decisions be the right ones? Will they be easy ones?

I will admit that it took me quite a while to get into this book, but that may be because I didn't read the first book in the series. But boy, when this one took hold of me, it didn't let go!

I loved the character development throughout the story, and I came to love (and despise!) each character. There were some scenes that felt a little rushed, but overall, this is an excellent read.

And now I need to go get that first book and devour it!

Lightshed is truly a light in the darkness. With so many books so focused on darkness and one person overcoming it. Lightshed instead focusing on the light lambients light and how it can free so many from the clutches of darkness. I love how every single character is flawed. Showing us that no one is perfect, no one has it all together and we all need his light. Lightshed is action packed, swoon worthy moments, packed with hope and real emotions. Be prepared to be invested and not at all ready to put it down until the last page.

What a great sequel! 👏🏼 I read book 1, Shadowcast, last year, and loved it. I didn’t think it was possible, but I ended up liking Lightshed even more! The character growth in this one was perfection. 🤌🏼 I loved seeing how far Mason’s character has come in this one. The romance between him and Seria is so great. In my review for Shadowcast, I mentioned how this series would be perfect for those who loved Fourth Wing but without the spice and I still stand by that. The Gateway Trilogy is a great alternative to some of the other spicy, romantasy series that are popular right now.

I want to keep this review spoiler-free, so I can’t share everything I want to say, but just know, you need to read this one! I was engaged with the writing and the story from the very beginning and the ending has me very impatiently waiting for book 3!

Shadowcast left me yearning for more and Lightshed is no different! I laughed. I cried. I yelled a few times. The story spoke to me deeply in so many levels.
Christian symbolism shines brightly throughout the entire story in a way that gives hope and teaches lessons without feeling preachy or heavy-handed. The character growth is probably my favorite aspect of this book. I cannot wait to see how they continue to grow in the next book!
My only complaint: needs more Sanjo! 🫏😂💜

Lightshed is a worthy successor to Shadowcast!

The battle between light and dark continues, both in the world and in Mason's heart. Characters have to face the consequences of their decisions and come face to face with truths that shake them to their core. There are losses that are felt keenly by both the characters and the reader. This is not some fluffy love story without substance. This is an epic filled with love, loss, and despair, but most of all, it is a story of hope that leaves the reader feeling encouraged.

I can't wait to read the final book in the trilogy and see what is in store for Mason and Seria!

Picking up where we left off in Shadowcast this book jumps you back in the deep end and breaks your heart a new with the drama with the MC's.....

Well, that was a roller coaster…….. Here we start out with the sun shining and the birds are singing and ……………… BAM……… just like that we are going to throw you in the deep end of the pit where you are praying it is going to get better for the mc. The imagery in this book is vivid. Beautifully written and the message is clear….. On a personal note, this book was a hard read for me with circumstances in my own life that it touched. But isn’t that what a good book is supposed to do? Touch you and speak to you when you are dealing with things? Shadow cast won some great awards in 2024 but I predict Lightshed surpassing it……. The author should be proud of this work and the heart that she poured into it. Can’t wait for the concussion of this trilogy and where the book will take us……

“When the darkness closes in, still I will trust in Him.”

Lightshed is a powerful symbolic YA fiction depicting the battle between good & evil, light and darkness. From the get go, I was drawn into the romance & action as the main characters, all flawed in their own way, try to grapple with their choices. The romance is a Romeo & Juliet type story where love blooms despite being sworn enemies. This is the second book in The Gateway Trilogy & highly recommend reading the first book in the series.

Mason Grey’s a Reader with the ability to read people’s thoughts and control them with his Shadowstone. As a warrior for the dark emperor Jader, he vows revenge on Prince Eric and the Stewards whom he blames for his brother’s death. Amidst his desire for vengeance, he’s fallen in love with Seria Gayle who sides with the Stewards & Lambient. As he wrestles with his choices, Mason tries to win Seria to his side, but as unimaginable deaths occur & Mason finds himself doing things he never imagined, he begins to question his loyalties.

Seria feels guilt every time she meets with Mason. Though she supports & is friends with the prince, she can’t help feeling like she’s betraying him every time she sneaks away to see Mason. As she tries to convince Mason of Jader’s wickedness, she also battles within herself over her love for Mason & her loyalty Lambient.

Prince Eric made a terrible mistake twelve years ago in sending inexperienced men to fight the Darkmen while he searched for the Shadowpit. Their hasty actions resulted in the deaths of innocent young men including Mason’s brother & placed a cloud over the prince’s reign. Now as he fights to protect his Kingdom from Jader, he vows to not make the same mistakes again.

This story was filled with twists & turns. It’s not a fluffy, hea fantasy where no one get hurts. There are real consequences, fierce battles, and no one is perfect. My only wish is that I’d read the first book in the series. It took me a while to really understand what was going on even though the author does give some of the backstory. I quickly appreciated the struggles of all the characters involved & the redemptive storyline. There are so many positive messages & I can’t wait to go back and read the first book.

Highly recommend to YA inspirational fantasy fans. Looking forward to the third book! I received an advanced complimentary copy from JustRead Tours. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

Seria, Mason, and Prince Eric are back. Along with Emperor Jader's army; and along with Eric's Stewards and knights who love and follow the Lambient. Mason is still being driven by his emperor's mindbending mental invasions and his own lust for vengeance against Prince Eric. Along with his own quite developed gifting as a Reader, who can read the thoughts of those he engages eye contact with--as well as forcing them to do the very thing they would never do. Under normal circumstances, that is.

Though Seria follows the Lambient, she is desperately in love with Mason, who should by all accounts be her mortal enemy. But the two of them meet secretly, convinced that somehow they can make their relationship work. Even though it has to be hidden from their superiors. Because really, if they were found out? Consorting with the enemy won't be dealt with lightly.

Thus far, Mason has been able to keep from Seria the worst of what the Emperor's soldiers do. If she knew what they were truly doing, he knows that that would break her trust in him. Now, they're still able to exist in secret with their love. But what if...

Lightshed is a fantastic read and an exceptional middle book of a trilogy-to-be. (Now, books 1 and 2 have been written. Now, we're just waiting for #3!) Like all of the best middle books of adventures, it does carry the story and adventure along. But it gives us--and the characters themselves--a moment to examine their deepest hearts and their faith in the Lambient, and in each other. Just an excellent story, with captivating characters and whose hearts and choices so believable.

I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions shared here are my own honest ones.

Mason Grey has earned his coveted Shadowstone. He is rising in the ranks of Emperor Jader's army. But he can't give up his attraction to Seria.

Seria is as attracted to Mason as he is to her. She looks forward eagerly to their meetings that, for obvious reasons, must remain secret. But war is coming, and she fears Mason may lose himself to the darkness forever.

Lightshed carries on where Shadowcast left off without missing a beat. Crystal D. Grant has given us another epic fantasy romance with characters you want to both cheer for and sometimes shake. There's a lot more tension in Seria and Mason's relationship now, because they both have to worry about getting caught meeting. It wouldn't be good for Seria to be found fraternizing with a Darkman, and it would most definitely be very bad for Mason to get caught canoodling with someone on the side of Light. And Seria, in particular, has it rough, wondering how far Mason might go in the service of the Dark in the coming battle.

There is action aplenty, as we get a front-row seat for clashes when Seria sneaks herself into the convoy of Stewards going off to war. It was a stupid thing for her to do, but Grant uses that to let us see sacrifice and betrayal, victory and defeat and the foreshadowing of battles yet to come, up close. There are so many good parts to this book, I just don't even know how to explain them all without spoilers. I'll just say that this book had me turning pages just as quickly as Shadowcast did, and Grant left it wide open for book 3 in the trilogy to be a real humdinger. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Once again the author has knocked a story out of the park! Book two picks up right where book one leaves off. Seria is wrestling with her heart and her beliefs. Mason is bent on having revenge on Eric for the loss of his brother!

The author has done an incredible job of weaving faith into this fantasy story! While the references are for their world, it's clear who the Lambient is and the role Jader plays. Light vs darkness is prevalent throughout the story. We see how evil can twist one's thinking, but even the light can shine in the darkest of places.

As believers, we know how easy it is to go astray. How our hearts can be deceived, and that's played out through sweet Seria. She has given her heart to Mason, but he doesn't believe in the Lambient. In fact, his hatred is just as strong as ever. But God! It's not surprising how Mason struggles with how he feels and thinks when he sees all that Jader is doing, but for a cause he's believed information so long it's hard to let go of that anger. Truth cannot stay hidden and as it comes blazing forward, Mason has choices to make.

There were some incredibly sweet moments, heartbreaking moments, and joyful moments. An array of emotions plagued me throughout the story. Always cheering for good to win over evil. It's so easy to see how Jader keeps fueling the flames of bitterness in Mason. He feeds into Mason's thoughts and feelings constantly bringing his pain to the surface. It's subtle, just like evil can be. We can see how twisting and deceptive Jader is, which is a stark reminder of how the Devil is the same way.

If you love it when faith combines with fiction (especially fantasy) then you do NOT want to miss out on this story!

I needed a few days to come up with a decent review for this book, because I didn't just want to write "this book is great and awesome and sooo good" - which it is-, but to describe why it is all that.
First of all, Mason's character arc is phenomenal. He's relatable, comprehensible and very thoughtful and well written.
There are heartbreaking moments, which are beautifully dealt with.
I'm really a fan of how Grant writes multiple POVs, it's thoughtful and lovingly done.
I also really like Eric's POV and character arc, even though it doesn't have a romantic side (or does it?;). I think his struggling with the "I need to and can do everything alone and by myself"-attitude is sth many Christians struggle with and his epiphany about that is what we all need to have and hear again and again.
The glimpse in Braylees private life is so sweet.

I love how C. Grant captures different phases in the life of a Christian, each with its own struggles and how it all leads to surrender to His grace eventually.

The only thing I'm confused about, is the consequences for Seria at the end of the book. They strike me as rather hard in relation to her doings, especially since she didn't fully explain, why she did what she did. In the end I thought her rather emotionally distant (especially to Mason) which I found unlike her and I didn't really understand why. But there will be another book and I really hope for a happy ending in the next one! :)

Now, stop reading my review and go read this masterpiece of a book!

“Courage doesn’t mean you never feel fear. It means you do what has to be done in spite of it. Sometimes that means sacrifice, but when you’re doing the right thing, it’s always worth it.”

“I’ve always believed there was good in you.”

“She could never go so far that the Lambient would not find her or receive her back into His fold.”

“But I’m learning that the Lambient meets us where we are. And despite how hard it is to surrender my own will, it’s better in the end to trust His own.”

I began Lightshed immediately after finishing Shadowcast! Lightshed resumes the tale of Seria and Mason where Shadowcast left off. This sequel does not disappoint, and I am looking forward to the final book in this trilogy! Rarely do I stay up late to finish a book, but I absolutely was not able to put this one down!

Throughout this novel, Seria and Mason face challenges that question their convictions, faith, beliefs, and love for one another. Both characters grow and transform throughout Lightshed.

Lightshed is a powerful tale of forgiveness and redemption. I did not foresee all the plot twists and turns, and they completely gutted me. Lightshed is not for the faint of heart, and this novel is a wild ride, leaving your emotions to run the gambit. I am eagerly awaiting the final book in this trilogy! I cannot wait to see how the story ends for Seria and Mason! I HIGHLY recommend this book!

I really enjoyed this book! There were so many parts where I got mad at the characters😅. The writing for the inner turmoil that Seria experienced was really well done. She loved Mason, but loving Mason meant giving up her desires for him to Lambient. I don't know if I could have had the courage to do that. Random side note, I kept getting Star Wars vibes. There was one sentence I highlighted, which made me think had to be a Star Wars reference. “Always look for the high ground.” This was something Braylee said to Eric during a spar between them. Also there were multiple instances that I highlighted for their spiritual relevance. “Dear Lambient, I’m so sorry for going against what I knew to be right.” She sucked in a shaky breath. “Please, forgive me.” God is always near; He never leaves us or forsakes us. But we must also repent of our sins, knowing that he is faithful and just to forgive us. Another quote that stuck out to me was “How can you hate Him if He doesn’t exist?” That is something that often comes up in today's culture. People say how much they hate Christianity and God, but how can they hate someone who doesn't exist? Isn't that very hatred proof of his existence?
Again, I would highly recommend to lovers of Christian fantasy, and if you're not, I would still recommend it😉

After reading Shadowcast and being left on an epic cliffhanger, I had to continue the story and see what happened next with Seria and Mason. This second book in the Gateway Trilogy was filled with the same vibrant world-building and encouraging allegory as the first. It's really very well-written. All the imagery is blended into the narrative in a way that makes you feel as if you're right there with the characters. The character growth was amazing as well. I don't want to go into too many details for those who may not be caught up in the series yet, but watching each character learn valuable lessons as they walked through life was thought-provoking. To me, this book seemed a little slower than Shadowcast. There was still lots of action, but I think knowing that the final battle and (hopefully) HEA for certain characters wouldn't be until book 3 made me anxious to just get there, thus I wasn't as invested in the smaller battles and everyday life in this middle book. I still enjoyed getting to know Seria, Mason, Eric, Lena, Braylee, and others better throughout this story. This whole series is great for Christian readers looking for fascinating fantasy reads. There is fighting between light and dark, there's star-crossed romance and maybe even a little side-romance between a couple other characters, and there's well-thought-out allegory.

What can I say about Lightshed? What an amazing sequel to Shadowcast. The themes of the series are more fully seen in this book. Themes of redemption, forgiveness, and breaking codependence.

*Spoilers ahead if you haven’t read Shadowcast*

Mason and Seria are doing their best to make their relationship work, but now Mason is a shadowman and Seria is a healer to the Stewards’ Fort.
The battle between the Stewards and Jader’s Army is getting more intense and this book is more intense. This one is a page-turner that will keep you saying just one more chapter.

We learn more about the massacre at Handan and why Jader is hellbent on defeating King Aden and the stewards.

Again Crystal is a master at creating characters. You can’t help but get attached to them. Be prepared to have your heart tugged. You will feel all the feels.

Choices must be made. Light vs. darkness. Truth vs. lies. What’s right and what’s wrong?

I highly recommend Lightshed. I cannot wait for book three.
