"Nick Ryan knows his craft, and his topic. His World War 3 stories are tightly-written, fast-moving, with great characters." - LARRY BOND Co-author of Tom Clancy's 'Red Storm Rising' and New York Times bestselling author of 'Red Phoenix'
As American-led ‘Coalition of Freedom’ forces mass on the North Korean border to commence the ground invasion of China, a company of veteran US soldiers prepare to face their most difficult mission; performing an important pre-dawn attack on a Chinese artillery park in the forests east of Dandong city. Alpha Company are led by Captain ‘Buck ‘Razor’ Gillette – a reckless leader with an arrogant disregard for orders and a contemptuous loathing for the fighting quality of all America’s allies.
But when Gillette’s rash, impulsive decisions lead to deadly disaster, his career is left in tatters; his reputation ruined.
Then fate steps in to hand Captain Gillette one last chance to redeem himself; to prove his leadership qualities, to win back the faith of his men, and to fulfil a privately-sworn oath of honor.
This one was ok but the story was a bit far-fetched. I've reached the end of the series now, it's not been a bad set of books and I would, on the whole, recommend them as short novellas. They are completely unconnected with each other and can be read in any order.
This book is short - just shy of two hundred pages - and I think that really cost it. You're dropped right into the action at the start but with very little background on our protagonist and the team he leads. At times it feels like the author is just showing his vast military knowledge and sprinkles in some story in between. Two dimensional characters just lead me to not be that invested in what they were doing. Combat scenes were fairly well written, but it just felt lacking overall.
Oath of Honor by Nick Ryan is a fast-paced World War III techno-thriller that follows Captain Gillette on the Chinese front as the Allies push deep into enemy territory. Focused on intense infantry combat, the novel delivers gripping battle sequences and strategic warfare while keeping the action grounded in the soldier’s experience. Despite its shorter length - under 200 pages - the book packs a punch with relentless pacing and high-stakes military engagements. With a sharp focus on ground warfare and the brutal realities of modern conflict, Oath of Honor is a must-read for fans of action-packed military fiction.
His bravado cost lives in empty pursuit of fame and his individual awards. He saw opportunities and in spite of his orders pushed his men into dangerous firefights against the Chinese military. Regarding his orders as suggestions, he sought the opportunity to show his bravery and whip smart analysis. He learned his lesson as he and his platoon faced relentless action by Chinese troops. The action is constant, fast-paced and bloody. The storyline is complete as one officer learns his place among his men and fellows. The bloody lessons learned frame the gore and filth of combat. This is s great read!
It was a great fast paced read . While the series as a whole is good , this is definitely one of the better ones .
The story follows Captain Gillette on the Chinese front of the war as the Allies push into China . Gillette seems modeled almost like Lt Spears from Band of Brothers as he’s heroic to the point of reckless and leads his company in an aggressive manner. After misjudging a mission that leads to several ally deaths, Gillette finds himself on a mission for redemption .
As a fan of the genre , I enjoyed the infantry centric book and the character journey in this one .
This book details a man who thought, in his arrogance, that he knew best. Instead we see him learn and grow in the unforgiving classroom of combat where death is just a moment away for so many, This is a well written tale of war from the first word to the very last.
It doesn't get any better than this. Ryan manages to capture the horror of war while putting you right there to experience what solders go through and how they deal with it. You can't help becoming involved with the characters, both with their highs and their lows. What a great series!
I liked the main character, Captain Gillett. He seems to be a troubled but good man. He is a driven leader, but has a big flaw. The battles are realistic, and the story makes you feel like your watching it unfold. The ending wrapped things up nicely. kudos to the author.
Mr. Ryan writes well researched stories making the reader turning the pages till its done. The characters in the story worked well together and you could feel the emotions they had for there soldiers. Anyone who likes military stories will enjoy reading Mr. Ryan's books.
This was a great military read. I would have loved to see more people of color mentioned in the story however it was a great action read. It didn’t glorify war. No story should. War is a horrible thing. That being Said I recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre.
Mr Ryan, you’re better than this! Surely there’s more than enough arrogant, isolationist rhetoric coming out of American without your main character adding to it. Captain Gillette is a cliche parroting all that is bad about modern America.
