Thank you River Street Writing for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review!
Connors newest poetry book brings readers right back into the isolation and anxiety during the Covid-19 pandemic while also managing to keep a strong thread of hope throughout.
"The Long Defeat" covers several themes - the pandemic, love, job dissatisfaction, malaise - but its main themes are never-ending hope and overcoming all adversity.
In a collection like this, you're not going to like every poem, but I liked most of them, so it's a win in my mind. Standout poems in my opinion include the title poem, "Violet", "Our Road", "Scars" and "Micah".
It was great meeting Patrick Connors in person at the Mississauga Literary festival this year. I read this book and he covers the Pandemic, along with his own issues and job dissatisfaction very well and I like how despite his struggles he keeps his hope for better.
