Can Zev and Marieke’s bond survive her dying country and his fractured family?
Marieke is more determined than ever to save her deteriorating country, and she doesn’t intend to let Zev walk away from the mystery without a fight. But with Oleand now plagued by natural disasters, time is running out. And from the capital to Sundering Canyon to the southern jungle, the answers seem always one step further from her reach.
As Marieke edges closer to the secret of heartsong, Zev knows he should pull away. But every minute spent with her makes that more impossible. The last thing he wants to do is betray his family, but each time Marieke risks her life in her quest to save her country, the truth becomes increasingly harder to deny—he can’t live without her.
Zev and Marieke will have to find a way to overcome the barriers that keep one another out. Because it will take the strength of two countries, and the magic of both songcraft and heartsong, to stand a chance against the forces bent on destroying all they love.
A Fractured Song is the second installment of Heartsong, a YA fantasy trilogy set in the Sovereign Realms, where magic is harnessed by singers. It should be read after Book One—A Splintered Land. When a singer with too many questions meets a farmer hiding dangerous answers, past and present collide and heart is pitted against duty. If you enjoy adventure, magic, and clean and swoony romance, enter the world of Heartsong today.
Deborah Grace White was more or less born reading. She grew up on a wide range of books, from classic literature to light-hearted romps. Her love of fantasy was inevitable from the time her father read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to her and her siblings when she was four years old.
The love of reading has traveled with her unchanged across multiple continents, and carried her from her own childhood all the way to having children of her own.
But if reading is like looking through a window into a magical and beautiful world, beginning to write her own stories was like discovering she could open that window and climb right out into fantasyland.
Now she gets to live that childhood dream amidst the fun and chaos of life with her husband and their four kids.
I told myself I wasn’t going to jump right into this second book, but oops! I was starting to understand more of the magic system and curious what would happen, so I started it anyway.
Set a month after the ending of the first book, this sequel has some answers and even more questions through it.
Like the first book, this one also had a poorly timed kiss and since that’s a pet peeve of mine, I wasn’t thrilled with either of those scenes. Though, I had to laugh at Marieke noticing the new habit of a kiss after a near-death experience and it becoming a habit of Zev's. On the topic of the romance, so far I would definitely say it’s more than the other books I’ve read by this author in terms of emotions/feelings and longing, but it’s not super heavy on the actual touches or kisses usually. I would definitely say 16+ personally, but if the reader has read a lot of secular YA fantasy books that have romance, these probably wouldn’t be a problem.
Also like the first book, this one doesn’t technically end in a cliff hanger. But I’ll probably be reading it next because I’m curious how it’s all going to go down in the final book. There’s a lot more action and suspense in this second book and it’s set the stage for even more in the grand showdown. This series has been very binge-able and I’m looking forward to continuing and hopefully getting answers.

I waited to read the end of this one until book 3 came out because I knew I wouldn't be able to wait... And I was right. Another stellar book from White, with the promise of another adventure coming!
It's difficult to write a good second part of a trilogy. All the major players are already set up in the first book, and all the most exciting parts have to be saved for the end. This book started out slow, and there was a lot of political drivel throughout that I had a hard time following. However, the relationship between Marieke and Zev was as strong as ever, making it stand out and another enjoyable clean romance story. I'm looking forward to reading the conclusion.
This book picks up in a dramatic way from the first one. The adventurous fast-paced, daring, dramatic, a touch swoony, and heart-wrenching. This will leave you in tears. Can’t wait to see how the finale unfolds.
Thank goodness I'm a fast reader because I'm so grateful to finally have our protagonists on the same page committed to one another, with no secrets between them. Even though it's unclear whether his family knows that. Deborah Grace White continues to be one of my all-time favorites, and since she's the only one currently publishing at a reliable speed, she may be in the coveted #1 spot. For now, at least. I still love singing as magic, and her writing style is just lovely and accurate and clear, and I can not say enough good things. I even recommended her to my dentist and hygienist yesterday when they asked what I was reading. Can't wait for the next book, of course, but now that the relationship suspense is resolved, I can be slightly more patient at least. The last book's separation sucked and I just wanted them back together ASAP! Thank goodness Mari reached out.
I did struggle a bit getting into this story, but once things started to happen and the story moved forward it was easy to keep going and soak up what was happening.
Marieke hasn't given up her desire to find out what has caused her land to dry up. She also wants to understand what Heart Song is. Zev just wants to live on his land and stay out of Oleands problems, unfortunately, the woman he cares about is involved and it is tearing him up inside. How can he be faithful to his family and to Marieke?
Marieke wants to know if Zev still cares and sends him a note, she is going back into the chasm and is going to talk to the woman who is in charge of the Monarchists. That cinches it for Zev, he can't let her do this on her own!
New characters are introduced and one character, only named, has a part to play in this story. What has been muddy is becoming clearer. This is a clean read, no bad language or sexual content.
Wow! I must admit that I definitely did not expect the book to be like this. A Fractured Song took all the expectations I had gotten from the first book and surpassed all of them. Marieke and Zev's relationship was so sweet and I love how the series is not completely dedicated to their romance and how gradual the romance is. I'm also so glad that Marieke finds out Zev's secret in this book. The ending definitely took me by surprise and I don't know whether to be shocked or sad at what happened. While it isn't really a cliffhanger, it definitely feels like one and I NEED THE NEXT BOOK! I can't wait to have all the answers cleared up. I have to say that these two books in the Heartsong trilogy are definitely my favourite out of all of Deborah's books. I can't wait to read the rest of the story!
Another fantastic installment to the series! I am always impressed by Deborah Grace White’s ability to weave adventure and romance together so well!
The story started out with intensity and intriguing problems and never lost its fire. I was shocked by the reveals and swooned in the sweet moments between Marieke and Zev as they grew in their relationship together. This second book dealt with some difficult topics and yet left me uplifted and excited for the final installment in the series!
Seriously I cannot say how much I loved being surprised by the reveals in this book. And yet, hints at the reveal are now clear to me even way back from the first book. This book was very well written, as are all of Deborah Grace White’s books. Fantastic job!
Wow! This book was absolutely incredible! There was such an amazing twist at the end. I knew that they would find Jade eventually, but I never thought she would be the person she is, although I guess I suspected it. I loved Zev and Marieke's relationship as Zev is such a steady person and Marieke is so determined to do what's right. We finally got answers, or more of a speculation, on why Oleand is deteriorating and the stakes just got higher. The book was so intriguing, I HAD to keep turning the pages. I don't know how I can wait for the next book. This book was amazing!
There it goes: book 2 of perfect blend of magical world and extremely sweet relationship growth that answers some questions and solves some mysteries only to create more puzzles. The book is full of emotions, struggles, and unending supply of secrets. Add an easy, engaging style, plot that pulls you, and you’re ready to find book 3.
Like the title says, I am loving this series. As for this particular story, it follows form, and is full of action. It's what I expected in all the best ways. A good read.
Great character progression! New adventures. More answers and even more questions. I look forward to seeing how the final book in the trilogy wraps things up.
Still good, but this one dragged on for me. I get why Zev didn't tell her, but I feel like it dragged on too long and was obvious. I'm going to read the third book to finish the series but I'm not very enthusiastic to start it which is a shame.
4.5 Is anyone else hoping that Zev and Marieke meet all the couples over at Providore? I really enjoyed this. Normally, sequels are a bit of a disappointment, but boy, am I ready for the third book!
I really loved reading this book! I loved the characters and the plot! I had a hard time putting this really wonderful book down! I will be reading the next book in this really wonderful series!
As with all Deborah Grace White books, this is well written, with strong character development and plot progression. But as expected, it lacks the new world interest of the first book, as well as the satisfactory ending of the third book.
I couldn't help it. I jumped right into the next book. And oh, this one ends in tragedy! (Way to up the stakes, Deborah!) But the truth is out now and we just have to see what the characters do about it in the next book!
Marieke and Zev find their way back together again in this book, despite opposition from his family. Zev just can't help himself wanting to protect Marieke and I am here for it. They make several amazing discoveries (some of which you may not be surprised about if you've read The Singer Tales set in the same story world), and draw closer in trust.
I loved how Marieke tempered her curiosity about Zev's secrets, actively choosing to not push him with further questions when she could see they made him uncomfortable. She resolved to wait until he was ready to reveal himself. You can't tell me that isn't love.
Also, I just want to say that I really enjoy Deborah's writing. There are certain turns of phrase that are just *chef's kiss*. I can almost feel myself getting smarter by reading her writing! *laughing emoji*
Tropes etc: *forbidden romance *protective MMC *magical revelations *quest *forced proximity *search for truth *stronger together *magical creatures of legend
Content warning: farm fire, murderous intent, witnessing the murder/death of a loved one Intimacy rating: 1 (non-descriptive kisses, pining)
