This was a good book on AI threats and opportunities. I think Harari explained the concept of democracy better and more clearly outlined the dangers AI poses to it in his book “Nexus.” I also think the language was fairly poor; it seems like nobody edited it, or if they did, they weren’t a native English speaker.

That said, I like how this book focuses on what could be done to address AI. The concrete suggestions for strengthening democracy and democratizing AI, summarized well in the 2-page “Executive Summary for Policy Makers,” are real strengths of this book. Overall, the last 3 chapters + the exec summary were the best parts of the book.

Why AI Undermines Democracy and What To Do About It is a timely and thought-provoking examination of how artificial intelligence is changing the political landscape. Mark Coeckelbergh looks beyond the usual promises and fears surrounding AI to focus on its potential effects on democracy, freedom, equality, and political participation.

I found the discussion of surveillance, political manipulation, discrimination, and polarization particularly relevant. The book makes the important point that the consequences of AI depend not only on the technology itself, but also on the political institutions and social structures in which it is developed and used. I also appreciated that Coeckelbergh does not stop at identifying risks; he considers what democratic societies can actually do to respond and how technology might be shaped toward the common good.

This is a concise but substantial read for anyone interested in artificial intelligence, democracy, technology, or political philosophy. It raises important questions about the kind of technological future we want and the institutions needed to protect democratic values. A useful contribution to the ongoing conversation about making AI work with, rather than against, democratic society.

(Read the Finnish translation as the original was not available at the library).
Interesting book on a current topic. Issues are outlined rather clearly and the solutions in almost the same way. There's just something missing, or maybe I was fooled by the small size of the book. The discourse between abstract (democracy, communication) and more tangible ideas (AI can be used in x, y, and z) was, at times, a bit lacking.

Read for class.

A worthwhile endeavour that turned out to be repetitive and idealistic. He seemingly forgot about his Arendt-inspired totalitarian analysis until the last few pages of the book, in which he crams in Platonic calls for a Renaissance of the commons. While his ideas are good, his practical applications are under-researched.

Will address why AI undermines democracy. Will not tell you What To Do About It.

A strong title, but overly academic but without the references or diligence of explaining them. So mostly hard to follow unnecessarily.
