While this is geared towards teens/college-aged girls, I found this truly uplifting and motivating. I love daily devotions, so I wanted to give this a go. I think this healed some of my childhood/girl issues. I loved the devotions as well as the scripture that was included. The questions helped me dig deep but also be open and lay my worries at God's feet. I truly enjoyed this! I know it's meant for younger girls, but I'm a 38 year old woman, and it hit home for me and my past self. Loved every bit of it!
I received this from NetGalley and Tommy Nelson to read/review. All of the statements above are my true opinions after fully reading and utilizing these devotions and journal prompts.
This devotion book would be cute for adolescent girls. It addresses the real world struggles associated with teenage years - love, loneliness, beauty, self image, anxiety; In each devotional there is usually a story relating to the topic as well as some practical applications. I really enjoyed that aspect of a list of things to do or think about and it might make young girls feel a little more grounded. The reflection questions as the end of each devotion were very thorough and though provoking, encouraging a deeper connection to God and getting to know yourself a little better. There are mentions of some of the very real things teen girls may come into contact with - pornography, sexual relationships, ect. So parents use your discretion on ages of reading, but overall I would have loved to have this devotional during my teen years. A great tool to bring young girls closer to the Lord. Thank you NetGalley, Kari Kampakis, and Tommy Nelson for the opportunity to read and review this devotional!
In a culture saturated with comparison, Yours, Not Hers counteracts the lies about our worth. Rather than adopting the mainstream argument that we are independently “enough,” Kampakis points readers to the truth of their identity in Jesus. Throughout, she reminds young women of the beautiful fact that, even in the midst of personal and circumstantial changes, Jesus is our constant. And because He never changes, we are always, unchangeably, valuable to Him.
Structure
Forty daily devotions consist of a Bible verse, a point of personal connection (often in the form of an anecdote from the author), discussion of the day’s theme, a prayer, several questions for discussion, and a wrap-up statement.
Devotionals are attractively formatted, with pops of pink text for emphasis. Additionally, each section includes a page with an all-pink background. Discussion questions come with space for answers, enabling readers to interact with the devotional as a workbook.
Audience
Written for teens and college-aged young women, Yours Not Hers explores universal themes of identity, friendship and comparison, with a keen eye to the young-woman experience.
For example, in a passage about trusting God, even when it doesn’t necessarily make sense (Prov. 3:5-6), Kampakis shares about her daughter’s experience surrendering her desire to rejoin the high school cheer team. The passage about the long-term consequences of choices (Gal. 6:7-8), includes the author’s confession about sneaking off for a double date with an older boy, during high school. (She goes on to relay that, not only was she caught, but she agrees with her parents’ decision). And, the devotional about truth (John 14:6) includes the painful, but relatable, recollection of experiencing unfaithfulness in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship. Kampakis urges readers to turn to Jesus when the truth feels hard to handle, remembering that “Truth comes from God, because God is truth” (p. 58).
What I Liked
Kampakis’s writing is both engaging and relatable. I appreciate her vulnerability in drawing from her own life experiences, as well as her honest reflections on what these experiences illustrate or teach. These personal insights establish credibility, as well as familiarity, with the reader. It’s always fun to get to know the author through brief recollections, and Kampakis also shares stories from the lives of family and friends, when applicable.
As I read, I observed early on that this book was packed with solid content: encouragement that I could benefit from, even with a decade or so on the target readership. I appreciated the book’s strong emphasis, from the start, on our unchanging identity in Jesus. This is something that I need to be reminded of continuously, and I believe young readers will definitely benefit from this message. This is the ultimate antidote to comparison, and we see this theme visited and revisited, throughout the text.
Here’s a quote I bookmarked about the consistency of His grace:
His grace is bigger than any mistake we make. And until our last breath on earth, we’ll be a work in progress.
p. 160 Content Notes
For this age group, I do not recall content concerns. There are a few mentions of negative behaviors, but these are treated as learning experiences and not as examples of how to behave.
Recommendation Status
Full of beautiful reassurance, Yours, Not Hers is a refreshing and empowering resource for young women in a culture of comparison. Daily devotions offer powerful reminders that our value is grounded in Jesus, whose love for us is unchangeable.
Highly recommended for readers aged 14 and up.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher. Opinions expressed are my own.
Yours, Not Hers by Kari Kampakis is a teenage girl devotional that I think could benefit pretty much every teenage girl out there.
Yours, Not Hers includes 40 devotions encouraging girls to stop comparisons and love their own life. In the introduction, Kampakis shares, as a speaker, how she meets lots of teen girls. She is also raising 4 teenage girls. She said she thinks the world today is harder and darker than in previous generations. Teen women need a lot of support and encouragement to make it in this world today. This book can be a source of encouragement.
I like that Yours, Not Hers is an guided journal. I think many of us can discover more about ourselves when we pour our words on paper and reflect on them--more so then when we just sit and ponder ideas. Each day's reading starts with a Bible verse, then a story related to the verse that young women can hopefully relate to, space to write and answer questions, and then a final thought on the issue of the day from the reading. This book is also eye-catching and I think it is one that could actually help women of all ages even though it is directed at young women. I think Yours, Not Hers could also help moms of teen girls relate to their girls even better, if they read it along with their girls. As the author said, things were hard when we were teens but they may be even harder now, so encouragement is always a good thing.
I received a copy of this book from Tommy Nelson. All opinions within this review are my own.
I am a big fan of Kari Kampakis and her resources for teen girls (and their moms). Her latest book, Yours, Not Hers, is a 40 day devotional intended to help teen girls “stop comparisons and love your life.” It covers topics that high school and college-age girls deal with on a regular basis, such as loneliness, purpose, anxiety, waiting, humility, obedience, and discernment.
Kari starts each devotional with a focused Scripture, then incorporates personal anecdotes and biblical wisdom to make the topic relatable. Each devotion ends with a few reflection questions and space to journal, followed by a “final thought” section to drive the message home.
High school girls will love this devotional. And while it is not super deep, there is enough depth that I believe college girls will enjoy it as well. It would be an awesome gift for any of the young women in your life!
Yours, Not Hers by Kari Kampakis is a teen devotional that covers a lot of the topics her podcast covers. She includes personal stories in each entry and relates it back to the Bible and how to apply it to your life. I pre read this before getting it for my daughter. It will be a great resource when she’s a bit older. I think this is geared toward early high school and higher as there are several college stories included.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion.
This is a good resource for Christian teen girls to help them deal with difficult subjects such as loneliness, self image and social media. I liked the format of each day with Bible verses, a story/devotion, and questions to encourage the girls to reflect on the devotion and apply it to their lives.
This is such a great gift for young adults ready to make real connections, feel comfortable in their own skin, and deepen their faith. Topics include loneliness, anxiety, self-image, and faith. This devotional also serves as a wonderful journal, complete with reflection questions. Give the gift of grace to that special young woman in your life.
The book is really beautiful. I think it has a nice variety of relevant topics. I think it’s a great gift for a Christian teen girl. It has a lot of reflection questions that could work for women of any age as well.
Phenomenal devotional for teen to college age young women. The author’s perspective is positive and challenging. It is a fun way to spend time reading together with my high school age daughter.
