Whitney English is an American interior designer and social media entrepreneur of organizational supplies. Her 2025 book Organize First, Decorate Second joins the ever-expanding passel of books on this topic, explicitly drawing influence from Marie Kondo's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing and echoing sentiments by practically every other book on this topic. I seem inextricably drawn to this genre (I would consider myself well-organized but more clutterbug maximalist than minimalist), and other than the idea to look for spaces in my home where valet rods might come in handy, I didn't really come away from this book with any new ideas.

I liked the approach the author took regarding organization and decorating. She mentions Marie Kondo a few times and her book is still in my head when it comes to keeping things. I'm always asking..does this bring me joy?

The last 3/5ths was more about decorating. I wasn't the target audience there but I thought it would be perfect for my adult children as they are figuring out their new adult spaces and also creating room for kids and pets. So for me personally, it was 3 stars, but I'd definitely recommend the author and her book to others.

Something beautiful is in order. Decluttering is editing that is letting go of things that no longer serve you and thereby you create more space and energy for things that really matter. Editing comes from a place of mindfulness and intention. Identify your organizational needs and use trays, lazy susans, velvet hangers, and label maker. Your home should embrace the seasons. Attention is the beginning of devotion. Decorating is autobiography and write your home story. Make sure that your home serves you and personal spaces are the key to making that happen. Think of your home as a reflection of your heart, a space that welcomes others into your story. Our collections are arranged and categorized in a way that makes sense to us and allows us to easily find and enjoy our collected items. Arrange them to bring out their beauty, tell a story and highlight your personal style. Add motion-activated lighting for night time visits. (There are lots of DIY easy-to-install electrical lighting options these days). Avoid overhead lighting. Install a dimmer on each light switch. For a light that's truly warm and welcoming aim for bulbs in the 2700-3000 kelvin range often labeled as warm white.

The takeaway from this reading is little. But the author is really good at describing and talking about organization through routines and rituals. I’ll read it again in the future when I run out of things to read.

Very easy to read and also very encouraging. I like her sense of direction with using how you want spaces to feel or make people feel. I use that frequently when making decisions for organizing and decorating.
