Super helpful how-to guide for making your own home remedies, including helpful plant tips and seasonal remedies. I was surprised at how many of the foundational (frequently used) plants will grow in Phoenix.

Book Review: Nature’s Medicine Cabinet by Meagan Visser

Rating: 4 Stars

I recently picked up Nature’s Medicine Cabinet: Seasonal Recipes and Remedies for a Year of Botanical Wellness by Meagan Visser, and it’s a refreshing dive into the world of herbal medicine. As someone interested in natural wellness, this book quickly became a handy guide to understanding how to harness the healing power of plants throughout the year.

Visser, who brings her expertise as both an herbalist and a registered nurse, breaks down the basics of herbalism in a way that’s approachable for beginners but still valuable for those more experienced. The book is organized into seasonal chapters, which I loved because it aligns perfectly with how herbs grow and can be used in real life. Each section guides you through common health concerns you might face during that time of year, offering practical recipes that you can make yourself—everything from teas and tinctures to herbal oils.

One of the aspects I found particularly useful was the emphasis on sourcing local herbs and understanding the seasonal availability of plants. I appreciated the historical tidbits sprinkled throughout, along with foundational concepts that help you feel confident about preparing your own remedies at home. There are 60 recipes in total, each accompanied by beautiful illustrations that make it easy to identify the key herbs involved.

The cover is stunning and inviting, and the layout inside is clean and easy to follow. It feels like a perfect gift for anyone who loves gardening or is curious about herbal medicine.

If I had to give one critique, it would be that sometimes the depth of information could feel a bit overwhelming for absolute beginners, but with some patience, it’s totally manageable.

Overall, Nature’s Medicine Cabinet offers a wonderful seasonal approach to building a natural medicine cabinet right from the plants growing outside your door. It encourages ditching synthetic chemicals in favor of nature’s remedies—a message I wholeheartedly support. Four stars from me for being informative, beautifully done, and genuinely inspiring for anyone interested in botanical wellness.

This is a nice basic herbal book with a variety of recipes to make lots of remedies. Most of the recipes call for a lot of ingredients, which is often frustrating and costly for those who don’t have access to dozens of fresh herbal ingredients. I do have a wonderful supply that I’ve built up and access to quite a lot in my garden and through foraging, but many of the recipes still called for at least one or two ingredients I’d have to buy, especially ones not native to my area.

This is a great book if you want recipes more than remedies. I am an old fashioned herbalist and quite simple. I make my elderberry syrup the way I learned from the godmother of herbalism, Rosemary Gladstar — just elderberries, honey and water, for instance. I make nettle infusion quickly on the stove in the spring and keep dried nettles the rest of the year for quick teas. I put tinctures of hawthorn for my heart, motherwort for stress, elderberries for immune protection and astragalus for its adaptogenic properties in my morning keto coffee. All these things are small and easy, which is what works best for me.

There are no photos but there are illustrations of plants that are very pretty. I suspect they may be AI art as there is no illustrator listen anywhere in the book. I hope not and perhaps they are stock images purchased elsewhere. In any case they are lovely but not terribly helpful for plant identification or seeing what the remedies will look like.

All in all, this will be a good book for a new herbalist who wants to make up homemade syrups, salves, tea blends and such. The author is an established herbalist who can be trusted and she gives lots of good information and advice.

I read a temporary digital loan of this book via netgalley.

Nature’s Medicine Cabinet is a gorgeous, practical, and easy-to-use herbal guide that I know I’ll be referring back to for years. Megan Visser has pulled together over 60 seasonal recipes from soothing teas and tinctures to herbal oils, glycerites, and more and arranged them in a way that makes it so simple to find precisely what you need.

If you’re just dipping your toes into naturpathy or you’ve been making your remedies for years, this book offers something for every level. The fundamentals are explained clearly, and I appreciated the inclusion of essential safety notes, particularly around herbs that aren’t suitable for children or pregnant women.

The illustrations are gorgeous and make identifying herbs straightforward, even without photographs. Each is clear, well-sized, and thoughtfully laid out to match the recipes they accompany. And speaking of the recipes, they’re beautifully presented, easy to follow, and don’t require hard-to-find ingredients.

If I had to point out a drawback, it’s simply that there aren’t any photographs, but honestly, the illustrations more than make up for it, and I think they add a timeless quality to the book.

If you’ve ever wanted a single, approachable, and visually appealing reference for seasonal herbal wellness, this is it. Practical, inspiring, and beautifully put together, a solid five stars from me.

I love the aesthetics on this one—everything from the page layout and colors to the font and illustrations. Such a gorgeous treasure.

And this book is packed with information—more thorough than other herbalism books I've come across. For example, one thing that really stood out was the formula for proper dosing based on an individual's weight. And even having the book divided into seasons, based on the season the herbs are harvested is novel and intuitive. It takes the guesswork out of figuring out when to harvest what.

Then there are the recipes. They are precise and easy to follow. And I particularly like the brief description at the top of each recipe, which gives a clear understanding of the recipe's use.

Visually appealing, inspirational, and thoroughly educational. A great reference for the home herbalists' library.

This book is beautifully crafted and equally as helpful. With useful, timely remedies going season by season, it guides you through a year's worth of wellness. I appreciate how clear and concise the first chapters are, helping the reader understand the supplies needed, how to get the herbs they're interested in, measurements, etc.

I'm excited to put some of these remedies into practice!

Beautifully organized and illustrated. This book offers guidance on medicinal remedies found right in your garden, many herbs I found in my own garden. The recipes are easy to follow and provide alternatives to chemical cures. While I am not opposed to modern medicine, I do appreciate a healthier way to get through common season allergies. Please keep in mind the remedies are only recommendations and are not "cure all" medicines. Always consult your medical provider before trying anything new regarding your health.

This book is stunningly beautiful! The art on the cover and each page is part of the appeal of this book. There are several recipes to aid in botanical wellness that I can’t wait to try. I have made the Quease-Ease Syrup and found it quite helpful. There is also a ton of information on herbs and how to use them for home remedies; it’s very informational!
