Book Review: Healing Rest: An Invitation for Mommas Who Carry So Much to Lean into the Arms of the One Who Holds It All by Becky Thompson

In her latest work, Healing Rest: An Invitation for Mommas Who Carry So Much to Lean into the Arms of the One Who Holds It All, Becky Thompson offers a poignant exploration of motherhood, spiritual renewal, and the importance of rest in the lives of women who juggle countless responsibilities. As a USA Today bestselling author and the founder of the Midnight Mom Devotional community, Thompson draws on her personal experiences and insights to craft a nurturing guide aimed at mothers seeking solace and healing amidst the chaos of daily life.

Content Overview
Healing Rest is structured around the concept of providing mothers with a spiritual refuge, encouraging them to embrace rest not merely as a physical necessity but as a spiritual practice. Thompson’s central thesis posits that true healing and restoration stem from leaning into one’s faith and recognizing the need for divine support. Throughout the book, she integrates scripture, personal anecdotes, and practical exercises that guide readers toward a deeper understanding of rest as both a form of self-care and a pathway to spiritual rejuvenation.

Thematic Exploration
The primary themes of the book revolve around the challenges of modern motherhood and the often overwhelming burdens that mothers carry. Thompson addresses the emotional and spiritual exhaustion that many women experience, particularly in the face of societal pressures and unrealistic expectations. By framing rest as a counterbalance to these pressures, she underscores the idea that taking time for oneself is not an act of selfishness but a vital component of effective motherhood.

Moreover, Thompson emphasizes the importance of community and connection among mothers. The narrative encourages readers to support one another, fostering an environment where women can share their struggles and triumphs. This sense of collective healing is a critical aspect of the book, as it acknowledges that the journey of motherhood, while deeply personal, is also enriched by shared experiences and mutual support.

Practical Guidance
Thompson provides readers with practical tools to incorporate rest into their lives. The book includes reflective exercises, meditation prompts, and prayers tailored to help mothers cultivate a sense of peace and connection with God. These elements are thoughtfully designed to be accessible, allowing readers to engage with the material at their own pace. Thompson’s emphasis on actionable steps empowers mothers to create their own healing practices, making the book not just a theoretical exploration but a practical companion in their spiritual journeys.

Style and Accessibility
Thompson’s writing style is warm and conversational, making Healing Rest an inviting read. She balances scriptural references with relatable anecdotes, ensuring that the content resonates with a wide audience. The language is accessible, which is particularly important for busy mothers who may find it challenging to engage with dense or overly academic texts. This approachability enhances the book’s appeal, making it suitable for readers at various stages of their spiritual and maternal journeys.

Conclusion
Healing Rest: An Invitation for Mommas Who Carry So Much to Lean into the Arms of the One Who Holds It All is a vital resource for mothers seeking both solace and strength in their daily lives. Becky Thompson crafts a narrative that is not only reflective and introspective but also practical, providing readers with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of motherhood. Through her compassionate voice, Thompson redefines the notion of rest, positioning it as a sacred act that leads to healing and renewal. This book is a significant contribution to the discourse on motherhood and spirituality, offering encouragement and inspiration to all who carry the weight of familial responsibilities.

I more often read "historical fiction"-like books as a way to have a kind of “brain break” from the daily tasks of motherhood. It’s an easy hobby that I can drop in to quickly and then be drawn in to find out what happens next. It’s just not the same with most non-fiction books.
But I’ve found that Becky has a way of making her non-fiction books enticing to read! She makes it so easy to want to continue reading right from the beginning.

Her tenth book- Healing Rest- is no different in that way! It’s as if I’ve just sat down with a best friend and she SEES me. She can see what I’m really going through and speaks words of life & hope right into my situation. And somehow she keeps it up all the way from the beginning to the end of the book.

So many women, mommas or not, need the message this short & sweet -but potent- book holds. There’s something so healing and refreshing in those kind of conversations when you feel so seen. I believe God really has gifted Becky with the ability to write books speaking straight into a struggle and show how you’re not as isolated in it as you thought and there IS a way through it.
Read JUST the sample portion offered digitally and I’m sure you’ll see what I mean!

The really good books have a way of falling off the shelf and right into our paths, don't they? Right when I felt like I've been stuck on the struggle bus with life speeding right by, I learned about the release of Becky Thompson's latest book, Healing Rest!

Takeaways? Momma, you are so worth the rest! Becky tells us what we know but it is so hard to do. We have to take time for ourselves and lean into Him and rest assured, He will take care of us.

Becky provides her readers with relatable stories of motherhood joys, trials, and even tribulations. She gently reminds us that when our humanly worldly pressures and those times when our mama soul, body, and mind aches, we need pray and "lean into Jesus to find healing rest."

This book is a quick and comforting read. I related the most to her stories about pressures and anxieties that tends to pop up in motherhood from time to time. I also really enjoyed the little prayers, as well as a short list of "scriptures to pray when life feels like a lot," and the insightful affirmations at the end of each chapter.

Take a break to rest and recharge in Him and treat yourself, Mama. Get yourself a giant cup of coffee, tea, or your favorite drink from Sonic and read this book. Then pass it on to a Mama friend in need to read!

As a Christian mom who has felt overwhelmed by the constant demands of motherhood, this book was like a deep, healing breath for my soul. The past few years have felt like a relentless wave of challenges, one thing after another, but Beckys words met me right where I was, offering the kind of comfort and encouragement I desperately needed.

Reading this felt like sitting down with a dear friend, having the conversation my heart was longing for about true rest in the presence of the Prince of Peace. Becky beautifully reminds us that rest isn’t something we have to earn or chase , it’s found in Jesus, who meets us exactly where we are at. This book shifts your perspective and gently leads you back to the truth: God is with us in every moment, ready to carry our burdens if we surrender them to Him.

This book is food for the soul. Refreshing, transformative, and exactly what every weary mom needs to read. Becky has done it again, and I can’t recommend it enough!

As an anxious woman who has always struggled to “make time” for Jesus amid the lists and the busyness of life, this book was truly a game changer for me! Becky Thompson teaches about the rest that comes just from being with God - the Healing Rest that comes as we grow closer to Him. It isn’t the same as a break, or a nap, or “me time.” It is the promise that we are safe and can rest IN THE MIDDLE of the chaos, no matter the outcome, that kind of rest can heal our hearts and our minds and give our bodies the deep rest we really need. Becky’s books are all very Biblically sound and read like you are having a conversation with a good friend, and this one is no exception! If you know someone who is really needing rest (it’s not just for mommas), grab them a copy of this book! It is packed full of deep truth that is not a to-do list or step-by-step guide to feel rested - all while being an easy, short read. This is truly a valuable resource!

As an Enneagram 3, rest is the hardest thing for me. Slowing down feels unnatural—I thrive on productivity, achievement, and checking the next thing off my list. But Healing Rest was a much-needed reminder that true rest isn’t just about stopping—it's about surrendering.

This book met me right where I am, offering a blend of biblical truth, science, and practical steps to quiet my overthinking and lean into the rest God promises. I love how Thompson weaves together stories from Scripture with encouragement for every mom who feels like she has to hold it all together. It was a refreshing reminder that I don’t have to carry the weight of everything—because God already is.

If you struggle to slow down, if your mind is always racing, or if you just need permission to rest in the Lord, this book is for you. You deserve peace, momma. Let this book help you step into it.

Wow. Becky surely has done it again hasn’t she? As a military spouse, someone working in a tough field (social services), and a mom to 3 busy children reading this truly brought me back to connecting with God and leaning into him to thrive and not just survive, to take the time to rest fully and not just check a box by doing something that resembles rest. I’ll close out with this quote that has stuck through me for the entirety of the book “There is rest for your heart as you trust that Jesus supernaturally cares for and meets every single one of your needs, physically and spiritually”

I hope that this book is able to help bring to light the things we often forget to do for our selves or the relationships we set aside in such busy seasons of life, like it did for me.

Has the fast few years been a lot? Do you feel like it’s been one thing after another as a mom? This book truly changes your thoughts and perspectives on how to breathe into peace and rest with Jesus our savior by your side. Becky once again presents this in a way that we are sitting and chatting in a living room or coffee shop, and makes it so relatable whether you’re a new mama or seasoned mama veteran. This will give you a new mindset- God will meet us wherever we need Him to if we lean into this truth. Becky has done it again—this is food for the soul!

When life is hard, which is often, it is easy to feel defeated, unappreciated, and unloved. Healing Rest reminds women that they are "safely held by a good God who loves you". Each chapter provides real life stories of how the author has overcome situations in her life and motherhood journey through the power of her faith, prayer, and the healing rest that comes from knowing Jesus. Healing Rest is refreshing for the soul. This is a book I will read over and over because the biblical truths are exactly what I need after a long day of motherhood.

Becky’s books always seem to show up in my life at the right time and this one is no exception. With three kiddos keeping me busy to the max, finding time to rest is hard, but Becky reminds us that we are not alone and we aren’t meant to do this all alone. This book is such a good read and is perfect for a mama in any season. When you are reading, it feels like Becky is sitting right there with you talking to you as a friend. This book has helped me find hope, especially in those times when I felt like I had no more to give, and I hope it does the same for you.

STRONG 4 stars. This book is about finding peace and rest in the arms of Jesus. As moms, we carry a very full mental load, physical load, etc and it's easy to convince ourselves we hold the weight of the world on our shoulders, but we don't have to carry that load. God has us in his hands as well as our families, etc. The book offers practical advice and targeted scripture and is written in such a relatable way. Highly recommend!

I don’t struggle with anxiety. I am a homeschooling mom of four who does get overwhelmed and stressed though. Plus, I love Becky and everything she writes. Actually, narrates, because I’ve listened to all of her books on audio. She has a sweet, calming, authentic voice. There were parts of this book that did not apply to me, but there were a lot that did. Especially the last few chapters on leaning into Jesus for healing rest and relying on his power.
