What if we shared this simple, beautiful, Biblical truth with our children from the youngest of ages—how different would we be? How wonderfully could this shape our perspectives from childhood on, knowing that the God who made all the wonders in creation—who hung the stars in the sky, who tells the wind where to blow—knows your name and loves you oh so very much?
From #1 New York Times bestselling author and TODAY show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, this beautifully illustrated picture book showcases the wonders of nature, the beauty of God’s creation, and most importantly, how very loved you are by God. Mostly What God Does is Love You reminds children (and adults) of God’s great love for them, how very cherished they are by the creator of the universe, and how in turn, they can share that same love by being kind and compassionate to others.
With its awe-inspiring and charming illustrations and a poetic, relatableand age-appropriate message, Mostly What God Does is Love You is the perfect way for adults reading Savannah’s bestselling book Mostly What God Does to share this all-important reminder with the children they love—thatthe vastness of God’s love is all for them and how they can share it with others as freely as God shares his love.
Mostly What God Does Is Love You:
Reminds children that God is always with them, loving them unconditionally. Is perfect for family reading, bedtime story, school or daycare story time.Makes the perfect gift for birthdays, Easter, graduation, and other celebrations and gift-giving occasions
This sweet, uplifting book is sure to leave a lasting impression on children and adults alike, reminding them of the most important thing in the world—God’s enormous love for us—and how we, too can spread love and kindness, just like God does.
Via the soothing song of the paintbrush, the poem wanders across the page. Readers of this book will find what their religious teachings have, on occasion, fathomed to recall; that above all things God loves them, He loves humanity, & He appreciates his creation. Yet, what God also does is perhaps altogether outside of the mortal’s comprehension, whether He exists or not.
Although the material of this book—the lovely & tender illustrations—welcomes young readers to the poem that walks with them across diverse perspectives & imagery, the poem itself does not necessarily delve into the complexity of the world in which the reader exists. Certainly, for some readers, the simple reminder that God loves them, will suffice, they need not trouble themselves with how He might do so or why.
I find myself at the crossroads. I enjoy reading these little books & although my religious tendencies leave me engaged with ghosts, I am heartened to see young readers allowed to feel the warmth of their beliefs. One is often reminded of the harsher lessons given by the religious institutions wherein one comes to talk with God. Books of this style & approach have value in that they remind readers that their relationship with God is their own.
While the imagery was my favourite aspect of this book, I can also appreciate the simple nature of an easily worded poem. Readers of all ages might open this book & find themselves, their friend, their loved one, or a familiar face in their community; the author & illustrator have endeavoured to ensure that no matter what a person looks like, where they live or what they do, the essence of their rhyme remains true—God loves them, & He loves you, too.
Thank you to Edelweiss+, HarperCollins Christian Publishing, & Savannah Guthrie for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

The storyline in this beautifully written and illustrated book centers around all the things that God does, but mostly what God does is love you. God designed you perfectly the way you were meant to be. When you have lots of love in your heart, you share it with others.
The interior of the book sends a message of love to the children who either read or view the illustrations while someone reads to them. The illustrations are in bright colors and are eye-catching to get the child's attention. The message is easy to understand. It is a good quality and value book that children and parents will love.

Mostly What God Does is Love You is a short, somewhat sentimental story that works well as a read-aloud for young children. The book encourages and displays common values like inclusivity, friendship, and kindness, by drawing parallels between how God loves his creation and how we ought to love one another.
While there’s nothing wrong with its message, I wouldn’t put this in the category of a Christian book. The most central tenet of Christian faith - that God’s ultimate demonstration of love for his creation is seen through Christ’s death on the cross - is entirely missing from the story. The moral of this story instead boils down to - God is lovely, so you should be, too. The message, then, ends up being generic and you can insert whatever deity as God you’d like and it’ll work.
Message aside, the text is relatable and understandable for the preschool through early elementary audience. It’s one of those stories that lacks substance but carries itself through with a feel-good vibe. My chief dislike about this book was the illustrations. Bright, but rudimentary and underwhelming. I’d expected more artistry from a book focused on a grandiose topic like God’s love.
Overall, it's not a terrible story or message, but it's nothing worth seeking out. The author has previously published a book for adults about her faith and what God mostly does, so I would surmise this is one of those throw-away ideas that the publisher comes up with to complement the prior book and the author's name recognition.
Do you ever long for more faith-based books for children? This book is for you! "Mostly What God Does is Love You" introduces children to the joy of knowing God's presence in their lives. The eye-catching illustrations show God's beautiful Creation, and the simple text explains His deep love for everyone. Older children can easily read this for themselves, but smaller children will love having it read to them. Sharing this book as a family provides the perfect opportunity to discuss God's presence in our lives. Do they understand that the same God who made the sun, stars, and their favorite pet is the one who created them? That the Master of Creation did all this but still has time to watch over them and to care for all their needs?
My granddaughter is past the age of being read to, but I look forward to sharing this book with the children in my church. Morgan Huff's vibrant illustrations are instant attention-grabbers, and Savannah Guthrie's superb storytelling keeps them captivated to the end. Such fun on a Sunday morning!
I received a complimentary copy from the author and publisher via FrontGate Women's Blogger Network. There was no obligation for a positive review.
When I read a children’s book, I look for 3 things: (1) a story that is easy to follow, (2) creative use of language, and (3) illustrations that draw attention. Mostly What God Does Is Love You (by Savannah Guthrie, illustrated by Morgan Huff) succeeds in all 3 categories.
The story is great—because the message is so simple. No matter how big the world, or how many experiences we have, the one constant is that God loves you.
The writing is exquisite. Sentences such as “He blows the clouds into being and whispers to the wind,” and “Since mostly what God does is love you, you start to do it too” are both poetic and meaningful.
The illustrations are wonderful. The illustrator works in pastel shades—but has deepened the hue of each pastel so that the color is subtle and beautiful. The pictures capture everyday events so that young readers can understand the story being read to them.
I can hardly wait to share this book with the children in our family. My thank you to Harper Collins Publishing for the opportunity to read this book, which I won in a Goodreads giveaway.
Mostly What God Does Is Love You by Savannah Guthrie is the most beautiful book. Really, the title says it all! Combined with the lovely illustrations, Savannah's words tell readers (whether they're children or adults) how much God loves them. He causes the wind to blow--the animals to move around--the stars to appear in the sky...
But mostly, as Savannah says, what God does is love you.
There's love between family members--and friends--and especially between God and every person! Though the book doesn't mention 1 John 4:19, it certainly displays it; that God is love, and whoever lives in love lives in God. And God lives in them!
This darling book is one I'd readily give as a gift; for any holiday, especially Easter. I'd also give it to graduating seniors! We all need to be reminded of God's great love for us. 5 star book!
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
This book was beautifully written, showing young children God's love for them. Guthrie did a wonderful job expressing it in a way that little ones will understand, be able to think about, ask questions as they are reading, and see how they should treat others.
The illustrations are absolutely beautiful, but also kid friendly. It's whimsical, playful, and fun.
Mostly What God Does Is Love You is a book that belongs in homes, churches, libraries, schools - basically everywhere there are children. This is a book that I can see being read over and over and over again. I'm not sure who will love it more - adults or kids!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A beautifully illustrated and sweet look at the vastness of God and what He does. And yet, in all His greatness He focuses primarily on His love for you. On each of us.
In Mostly What God Does Is Love You an inkling of the significance of the individual, you, in the mind and heart of Almighty God is presented in the contemplative thought that He loves you. While doing all the huge, magnificent, and wondrous things He does in the World and Universe, He focuses His love on each of us.
I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and freely given.
The genius of this book is its simplicity. Its theme is its title. Every page reminds the reader of that theme. Then it subtly shifts the focus from what God does for us to. what we should do for others. It sends this message so smoothly and sweetly that we joyfully absorb it without realizing it until we have finished the book.
In a way this acts as the children's version to her book from last year "Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere", a book I really enjoyed. We are always looking for books for our granddaughters and this book is perfect for a young age with beautiful illustrations and a message to go along which is timeless and just as beautiful.
I thought this book was sooo good! It’s a touchy subject that not all people can agree on but the message is important. It’s not just about believing there’s a god who loves you but about being a good person and what it can do for you. The images also drew me in, very vibrant colors and great details that matched the story perfectly.
I was excited to win this book from a Goodreads giveaway. My kids loved this book, especially with the title being a repeated phrase several times in the story. A great reminder of how much God loves you.
My mother purchased this as a gift for my child (her grandchild). The illustrations and story are just beautiful. I really enjoyed reading this to my child. This was a wonderful gift and I highly recommend it for a young child (or those who are a child at heart).
A cute little read, with cute illustrations. To me, the writing felt uneven throughout. The illustrations uneven as well. I like the message though. I'd be happy to let my kids read this, and it would be a good one to check out at the library.
A tenderhearted story that simplifies the wondrous love of God through the eyes of children, animals, and our environment. Touching and beautifully illustrated.
