Shaikh-Down

Rate this book
On the Persian Gulf island of Belaj, British air-hostesses and Egyptian belly-dancers are working overtime to relieve oversexed citizens of their frustrations and petrodollars. One of the punters is whisky-soaked publisher Farouk whose randy wife Nayla is a niece of the local despot, His Highness Shaikh Khaled bin Khalifa al-Khazi.

Newcomer Cass, an East London housewife, becomes a $500 hooker. Sammy-Jo, an American stewardess with page-3-girl boobs, and bisexual British banker Eddy are drawn into a plot by BARF (Belaj Armed Revolutionary Front) to assassinate Shaikh Khaled in a bizarre bedroom romp.

What happens after the coup? Will it be the Dawn of Democracy - or "Whoops Apocalypse"? (And what unnerving fate does the author predict for Muammar Gaddafi and other tyrannical Arab rulers?)

“Witty, entertaining, raunchy and very well written.” Peter O’Donnell, creator of Modesty Blaise

“Ribald and politically incorrect. Set in a fictitious but absolutely believable Arab state where sheikhs and their minions are locked in a life-and-death struggle to survive the relentless move towards democracy. Entertaining.” Gay Times
“Probably a Zionist plot masterminded by the CIA to undermine the good image of morally irreproachable Gulf Arabs.” Gulf Times

Originally earmarked for the Methodist Mission Field, I soon discovered that ‘the missionary position’ didn’t suit me. A post-university career in telecommunications took me to the Arabian Gulf where I moonlighted as a journalist and socialized heavily with the ‘natives’ and with stewardesses from one of the local airlines, which came in handy when I started writing SHAIKH-DOWN.

I now live a few miles outside Brighton in southeast England.

In 2022 I re-adopted DAVID GODOLPHIN as my pen-name, the name I used for journalism in Qatar in the 1980s. David Godolphin's SOAP-STUD & BLUE-MOVIE GIRL is on Goodreads and Amazon. A sequel - VOYAGER, AGAIN - is ready to go, as is LAURENCE AND THE HIPPIES, a sequel to LILLIAN AND THE ITALIANS. I am disenchanted with the shark-infested waters that are Self-Publishing.

Decadent western mores slap stifling medieval manners around the face and lose. Nothing could have prepared Cass and Eddy, the chief protagonists, for what was to come when they dumped their unwanted pasts at check-in and headed for the oasis. Follow them as they struggle to keep their heads above water (and on their shoulders). An (almost) bloodless coup upsets the expat apple cart of decadent days and raunchy nights, forcing the lotus eaters to hitch up their skirts and scramble for the border. A delicious, laugh-out-loud, randy romp through the myopic and bawdy world of Gulf expatriate life set against the chilling winds of change.
