There's something lurking in the halls of Wilton Middle School. Something with fur...and claws...and long, sharp teeth. Something absolutely terrifying. And it doesn't like new kids.

R. L. Stine began his writing career when he was nine years old, and today he has achieved the position of the bestselling children's author in history. His other major series, Fear Street, has over 80 million copies sold.
Stine has received numerous awards of recognition, including several Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards and Disney Adventures Kids' Choice Awards, and he has been selected by kids as one of their favorite authors in the NEA's Read Across America program. He lives in New York, NY.
So I had a hard time deciding what would be my next book. I had this and Fifth Grade Zombies but I read the first three chapters in this book and I thought yes I gotta read this. Scare School starts off with Sam throwing his backpack against the wall because the zipper dosnt work .You see Sam has a bad temper problem and got kicked out of his old school for fighting and has to completely start over. His first day arriving to school he is late and while roaming the halls looking for his room he notices a animal like thing running in the hall and when it turns around it has a human face .The thing points to him and tells him "your IT" and runs away .Freaked out he manages to find his classroom and tries to tell the teacher ,but he and all the classmates act super weird .He hears a scream outside and sees this girl enter with a torn backpack and the teacher tells her not to scare the new guy. He tries catching up to the girl and they talk but when he asks what happens, she refuses to tell him .At lunch Sam finds a bunch of beetles in his lunch and rightfully freaks out. Tonya eventually tells him what exactly is going on you see there is certain creature in the school that picks the new kid as a target, because he wants to show him early who's boss .Of course Sam doesn't believe her and gets into a fight with the the thing pulling his tail off in the process, and this makes him very angry , causing him to get even crazier, including stealing a bunny that belongs to his dad and glueing his hands to his musical instruments. Sam goes on the internet and looks up this creature and it tells him how too defeat it.He also learns that these creatures can take form of humans. So we get this thing where Sam has to guess who the creature is and the way he guesses I didn't predict and who the creature was I didn't predict. The climax did have a very Goosebumpsey way to resolve things .It wasn't bad but a little silly. I also really loved the last sentence of this book .It reminds me alot of It Came From Beneath The Sink. I give Scare School a solid four out of five stars.
i still have a copy of this this shit slapped and traumatised me for waaaaay too many prepubescent evenings. i rmr when there was regular load shedding and we didn't have a UPS, i read this under an emergency light. did not see the story coming every single time i read it

Brief Summary: Scare School Something really weird went on with this review. I was writing it along with reading It and I guess the imp didn’t want yal to read it. So when I looked at it what I thought I’d typed wasn’t there. But it goes like this.
Sam has to go to a new school because he got thrown out of the old one for fighting. When he gets tehre he sees a green creature in the hallway that looks like a rat but has a human face. In the lunch room he gets a moutful of bugs in his mashed potatoes but when he looks there’s nothing there. A girl named Tanya later tells him there’s an imp at their school that likes to play jokes on people and he particularly doesn’t like new students. All the teachers and students are scared of him. They haven’t told their parents in fear of what he’ll do because he’s dangerous. The timp leaves Sam a note about who’ll drop first. Then he sees the imp again by his locker and it steals his jacket. He accidently pulls off it’s tail and won’t give it back. So, now war is declared. The imp takes a cat that Sam’s dad gives to him to share with the class (a rare ebony cat) and fools Sam into believing he ate it. But later, Sam finds it up a flag pole and rescues it. The imp leaves Sam several messages about who’ll drop first. He even pulls a prank on Sam and glues his hands to his saxophone. (Lucily the doctor is able to unstick them before he has to burn them off with acide). At an assembly, Sam aunts the imp and calls it out by waving it’s tail and tells it to come find him. None of the others want to fight the imp. So he’s on his own.
The imp sets the sprinklers off in class and starts to pop the lights. Most of the kids make it out. A piece of lightbulb hits Sam. He tries to make it to the door but sparks of electricity hit and then there’s an explosion. Sam touches the doorknob but is electrocuted. He falls to the floor and crumples. But someone pulls Sam through the door. The dr says he’s ok and he gets a lecture from his teacher (one of) for his stupidity. There’s a school band concert and before it starts Sam sees the imp. He draws its finger over it’s throat and says later. Sam chases after it and follows it up the stairs. He finds the imp into a supply closet. He finds Timothy Poster. He hides from his dad to find a quiet place to read and because his dad thinks he’s on the soccer team. Sam thinks he has to be the timp. He says he’s the timp. He has to be. Tim says he’s not but Sam doesn’t know if he believes him. He says if he doesn’t tell anyone he’ll help him find him. Sam thinks maybe he had the wrong door. He looks into the other room but the room is bare. Sam sees the imp again in the band room with his sax and tackles him. He squeezes him until he goes limp,, Sam stuff him in his case. He then figures out who he is. It’s Simpson. (He figures this out from his notes). He says he’s defeated him by guessing his identity. He inflates back to human form. He wants to know how hee found him out he says if he drops the S impson is in his name. Sam says he’ll tell everyone, but Simpson says he’s finished.
He says he’ll give him back his jacket if he giees him back his tail. Then he’ll go away and never come back.Sam agrees. He can’t resist telling Tim but then Tim asks to see the tail. Sam looks at the poster and then realizes Tim Poster IMP. Tim says to give his brother back his tail and he grabs it from him. He then tosses it to someone. Mr. Kimpal then shows up in the hallway. Sam calls for them to help but then realizes Mr. Kimpal is also one of them (their dad). He says he knows to much. He says the school is the perfect place for an imp family to hide and he can’t let him ruin that for them. Sam starts to run but the other two block him. Sam runs into the auditorium. He runs into Mrs. Simpkin but then realizes she’s one of em when she tries to warn him. Sam finds the others and takes his place with the other. The elves surround him on stage and start to circle him around and around. Tim starts to do an awkward dance and his feet start to move faster and faster. Sam grabs the imp and forces it to dance with him. People start to laugh. The imps powers start to fade. Tim pretends to fall and the imp falls on top of him. The audience cracks up. HE starts to twil the other one and dance even more crazy. He does this until all the imps fade away and there’s nothing lef but puddles. Mr. Kelly is named acting principal of the school. He congratulates Sam for destroying the imps. He says but now that the imps are gone there’s the troll to worry about. Can he help with that?
My Thoughts: Very clever how Simpson, Tim, and Kimpal were right in front of our faces the whole time. Did anyone catch on to it. I thought by the end of the book they’d *ALL be imps.

A great book for kids to read during spooky season!
There's an imp in the school, and the new kid, Sam, is apparently the only person concerned about it. It's stealing his stuff, putting bugs in his lunch, and playing all kinds of pranks on him. With students and staff unwilling to help, and parents that don't believe him, he has to face and defeat the imp on his own.
I remember being read this book in 4th grade. A lot of scenes and scares stuck with since. The image of the yellow imp on the cover, stealing the imp's tail, and the answer to the riddle. It took nearly 20 years before I discovered the title and tracked down a copy to reread.
Let me tell ya, this book holds up so well, as most Goosebumps books seem to. It's perfect for younger readers, and still enjoyable to read as an adult, and contains the perfect silliness to spookiness ratio.
What was the deal with Sam’s new school that had a weird creature slithering around? What did they mean when they said the new kid was always “it?”
Soon, we realize that there was a creature called an “imp” roaming and ruling the school. Sam’s life turns to terror when he fights with the evil creature and rips off his tail. But the real surprise comes at the end when all is revealed. A good read!
I did not expect whole family to be imp. Woah! The last chapter was like a surprise package. Sam fooled me good with that dance-laughter combined deception. When Mr. Kelly asked for another favour, I suspected him being an imp but no hahaha trolls??? What is going on with this school. Such a glamourous land. Sam is some crazy ass dude. My favourite line from him is,
“I’m going to pound him. I’m going to waste him!”
Duhhhhh I felt him. That imp was super annoying.

This one is hilarious and I liked how Sam is absolutely fearless. This story doesn't beat around the bush as the horror starts immediately. It's also very smart how he implemented WORD PLAY concept and it literally went over my head, haha.
I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I expected to but I liked the twist at the end so that bumps this one up by a bit. This isn’t really a bad book; I just had my expectations set up really high.
The Nightmare Room by R.L Stine is spooky and terrifying! You hold in your hand to a shadow would of shivers and screams. take a step away from the safe, comfortable world you know. Unlock the door of terror. There's always room for one more in... THE NIGHTMARE ROOM. There's something lurking in Wilton Middle School. Something with fur... and claws...and long, sharp teeth. Something absolutely terrifying. It doesn't like the new kids. What will you find in... THE NIGHTMARE ROOM next time? Read to find out what happens to everyone.
Definitely one of the better Nightmare Room books. I like that the main character is flawed and so the parents have a reason not to believe what he says.
