Olive Tran is turning ten! Now she can walk to school by herself and go to Kandy Korner whenever she wants. Finally!
But when Olive finds out Mrs. Ly was pushed on the street and her brother’s school friends had gross things thrown at them because they’re Asian, she starts to feel less safe. And why doesn’t her best friend Josh want to come to her birthday party at the trampoline park anymore?
Olive knows something is wrong, but she is determined to have fun at her party. If she shows kindness, maybe others will too. Every little bit counts!
I'm once again of two minds about "special episode" titles.
On the one hand, this book was really well written for the early chap book age group. The author manages to put a lot into a few pages. Explanations are high-level but thorough enough to get to the root of the matter for a younger kiddo. It's got fun pictures and great characters.
On the other hand it's a "special episode" title that feels a little too late for the current market. The rush of anti-Asian racism was the early 2020s and, while I'm sure anti-Asian racism is still very much a thing, it's not the foremost thing in people's minds right now. Given how tightly this title clings to COVID-19 and the experiences of Asian peoples in the few years that followed, it just feels late to the game.
