Five soldiers rode across the plains, At a cave they arrived. Green light shone from far within, So sought it, the brave five. A pulsing power, a stone half-buried, Beckoned, taunted, coaxed. Til five brave men, in unison did, Touch left hand to olden rock.
Bring. Take. Raise. Change. See. Three princes, each, shall come to thee. Monsters to guide kings to thrones, To keep real monsters chained with blood and bone. Your immortal burden cold and lonely, Hear! Rule until the bloody finish. For the mighty never stirred at dawn, They burst forth at dusk, into toothed beast’s yawn.
In the 1200 years since The End, fifty mothers in my line have passed the truth to their daughters. They passed truths of how the world was, of how the world changed, and even mythical stories of powerful romances that sparked great tragedy and war.
Those romances are dead and gone, and as the fiftieth daughter, I am determined the truths of my ancestors will die with me too. I will be the last daughter to bury her withered mother.
But ancients pull back the bloodied curtain without warning, and I cannot unsee the hidden world revealed beyond. Sinister impossibilities lurk in this walled city. They have always existed—dusk immortals who battle and prowl, filled with menace and conflicting purpose. And they, even the dark creature I blind with my presence, must decide the fate of all.
Yet fifty mothers prepared for nightfall. They knew five kings could not win.
Now the fiftieth daughter will walk into the toothed beast’s yawn.
For the mighty never stirred at dawn… and I’m about to inherit something more monstrous than the truth.
Of Monsters Of Kings is a dark fantasy romance thoroughly drenched with the morally gray and intended for mature audiences. This story contains monsters with manners, heaped teaspoons of spice, magical impossibilities, and not many conventional things at all, really.

this was odd odd odd. i don't know if i enjoyed reading it but i liked that it didn't remind of anything else i've read. it was very quirky and creative and i give it points for that
Kelly is an auto buy author for me, and her Blood Trial/Shifter Wars series are some of my favourite urban fantasy. However, I feel myself a bit torn over this one.
On the one hand, it is incredibly unique, and that is something to treasure in a genre that often has books where the story line and characters feel interchangable with one another. The prophecy and the world building is intriguing. The whole vibe of the story is that if a bizarre folk tale or fable, which I really did enjoy about it.
However, my biggest issue was with the characterisation. In making the dialogue, the way it was written and the somewhat nonsensical folk tale like style, I found all the characters to be somewhat lacking. This is clearly deliberate, and Patch spends most of the book baffled by her situation and trying to learn about it and Kelly puts the reader in much the same position. I did like Patch's tenacity and the way she stood her ground. But her interactions with all the characters, and theirs with her, felt very stilted and based on very surface things.
Pretty much every single monster that meets her in instantly enthralled and worshipful, and whilst the reason for that it foreshadowed, and then confirmed at the end, it did give all interactions a shallow quality to them.
Unfortunately, this also was the case with the love interest, King See. There is absolutely no basis for their connection with one another, and so all their interactions felt a bit flat. When I think of how hard I have adored all the couples in the series I mentioned at the start, it just seems bizarre there is none of that in this book, when it is marketed as a Gothic Romance.
Ultimately, I'd instantly go and read the next if it was out, I adore Kelly's books and give this one massive points for sheer originality. However, as someone who is such a character driven reader, I am a little disappointed with my lack of connection them.
I would definitely recommend you give this a try, though. But be prepared to stick with it and enjoy the bizarre nature of it!
everything about this book checks boxes for me. monsters? love. dystopian vibes? yes please. prophecies? hell yeah.
tell me why i’m 30% into this and don’t understand a single thing that’s happening here? patch, the fmc, seems just as confused as i am. she seems like she barely knows anything at all. everyone who speaks in the book feels robotic and it feels very one dimensional. someone close to her passes within the first few chapters and she’s basically over it in a paragraph or two?? the names are so weird, patch doesn’t even understand their names???
the prophecy was intriguing and i liked the dystopian elements, but my confusion over literally everything else ruined the story for me…
i’m not sure if this story just wasn’t for me or what, bc i’ve enjoyed kelly’s books in the past.
i received this arc in exchange for an honest review, thank you!
Since I started this book, I’ve been wondering what am I reading. This was the weirdest book I’ve read in a long time lol.
Did I understand what was happening? Not fully Was it weird? Yes Was I entertained? Also yes Did I feel misled by the cover? Indeed Did I continue reading and finish the book? Of course!
If you like Tim Burton, then you will like this. It’s like Tim Burton meets regency era.
The overarching theme to love yourself was done well. I give props to the author for the originality and uniquities that is this book.
Of Monsters of Kings is an extremely original take on the world of monsters. Think of high society mixed a bit with the monsters from Vanessa Len's Only a Monster series, but the monsters aren't pretty here. They are very much monsters.
Patch is the name of our protagonist here. And I admit it took me a LONG time to get into her. Not because I disliked her, but because she had no idea what was going on both in the world around her and to herself. She knew so little of herself that I too knew so little of her. But, it's intentional and I loved the little reveals. This girl, while wanting to know about herself, is literally just trying to survive.
Patch's way of speaking was a little off putting it's very very polite and I just couldn't get into it. BUT I think in part that is because I'm used to St Clare's style and humorous voice when she writes, and this is VERY different. My advice? Don't go into it expecting your comfort read Kelly St. Clare novel. Approach this as if it were a new author and I believe you will find the book highly entertaining.
A gothic romance with secrets abound, and a down-to-earth protagonist. You can't help but be sucked into the originality of polite monsters and all the questions you'll have will eat you up and keep you reading until you've squeezed every last bit of information out and will be dying for more! I'll definitely be picking up book 2!
This totally new world has my brain squeezing with major f’ery. I was not prepared for this story or way it was written. There were moments my stomach actually churned! And parts where I said “WTF KELLY?!” Crypt Keeper momma really set the mood for me.
First, this book is not written in a way where you understand right away. It took me about 5 chapters in to get into the groove of it all. Why? Because the writing style is not normally what I read. It gives Victorian/Bridgeton verbiage. It’s like elegant goth romance meets horror. Think Nightmare Before Christmas/Corpse Bride/Alice in Wonderland. Basically Tim Burton could have wrote this, but didn’t. Because Kelly’s brilliant mind conjured this insanity.
The story is wonderful, yet sad. There is deep meaning to some of this, that I was not expecting. I was fully prepared for maybe enemy to lover type stuff but got found family/self discovery type of vibes. Which I loved. Our FMC is tender and a deep thinker. She also has insecurities that was beautifully written which made it relatable. She found her voice and her authority. The lady laid down those boundries!
The book ends in a cliffhanger. But nothing out of this world. You will survive the wait, but with excitement! I know I’m looking forward to the next book.
“Of Monsters and Kings” by Kelly St Clare is a captivating gothic romantasy set in a dystopian future. Nineteen-year-old Patch (Perantiqua) is a maid in Vitale's only hotel, living a tough life trying to care for her mother. After meeting a mysterious immortal, her world completely changes, as she is thrown in a grand game involving monsters and magic.
This book was my introduction into St Clare’s works. I found St Clare's writing to be immediately engaging, drawing me into a world where nothing is as it seems. The world building was really good, the author crafting a magical universe that completely enthrals you.
I also really enjoyed the characters, especially Patch. A well-developed character, her journey explores themes of beauty, self-worth, and inner strength.
Overall, the book offers a mix of everything: slow-burn romance, dark royalty, and magical intrigue, with plenty of unexpected twists. The ending is a cliffhanger that leaves you eagerly anticipating the next installment. I really enjoyed reading this book and I cannot wait to see our wonderful FMC continue her journey!
I have loved every single book Kelly wrote, but this? Felt like it tried to hard to be a poetic masterpiece or something about loving urself. I cringed alot.
This is an ambitious gothic romance that doesn't shy away from its own quirkiness. This book definitely goes all-in on its dark, dreamlike atmosphere, creating a unique, almost surreal world that has incredibly odd world-building and prose. It's a story that feels like it crawled out of a fever dream. The premise is intriguing. There's a lot of oddity here, from the peculiar prose to the erratic pacing, and while that can be great for some readers, it might feel a bit disorienting for others.
I did appreciate the dark romance elements, especially the creative twist where the main characters can't actually touch or get close to one another. It adds an interesting layer of tension and makes their connection feel fresh. The "monsters with manners" angle is another fun element that adds some unexpected charm to the story. It reminded me a bit of the Tim Burton-esque style—a romance between Jack Skellington and Sally, with all the weirdness that entails.
However, while I do love a book that's not afraid to be strange, this one felt like it was trying a bit too hard to be ... unconventional. The prose was at times awkward, the narrative flow felt uneven, and it was easy to get lost in the confusion of what was happening. It felt like a whirlwind of ideas, emotions, and settings that didn't always come together in a cohesive way.
Overall, this is a peculiar read that will appeal to those who enjoy their fantasy with a heavy dose of the bizarre. It's not a book for everyone, but if you like stories that feel like they belong in a gothic carnival or a dark, twisted fairy tale, this one might be right up your alley. Just be prepared for a wild, weird ride that won't always make sense but will definitely keep you guessing.
Thanks to R&R Booktours and the author for the opportunity to read and review. This review is based on a complimentary copy and it is voluntary. All opinions are my own.
I don’t know how Kelly managed to gift us with yet another completely unique world, full of possibilities (IYKYK). Loved learning about it through the eyes of Lady Patch in this beautiful love letter to self-acceptance. The writing style was also completely different from all of her previous books and it read almost like a fable. I can’t wait to see what Patch does in book two, hope she brings down a feminist revolution!
I was initially drawn to ‘Of Monsters of Kings’ by the promise of a unique blend of gothic romance and fantasy. Plus that cover, it’s a beauty. The author quickly drew me in with Patch’s unfortunate circumstances. The world is intriguing and filled with monsters and complex characters, like the many princes. Patch, the heroine, is a strong character, which I love. The princes were a great addition to the story. I'm particularly intrigued by the unusual names of the Kings and hope to learn more about their significance in future installment. While the plot included some exciting twists and steamy scenes. I'm eager to see where the story goes from here.
4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/5 🌶️ This book was a trip! I've never read anything like it. Also, I read this at the perfect time, it got me into an ideal spooky mood. I have so many questions! I am very intrigued to see what unfolds in book 2! I can say that I definitely did not expect the story to read like it did! Like I said before I've never read anything like this, it's such a unique and interesting story. The entire book reads like an old poem, it's really quite beautiful. I enjoyed it a lot. The world-building is quite creepy and gothic vintage. I adored the characters, specifically the princes! Ugh, they have my heart, they are just precious and macabre at the same time. There wasn’t a lot of romance, it all happened more toward the end. Patch is our main girl and is very intriguing, the way she speaks is something I've never read before. There are a lot of secrets and discoveries in this book. You're going to feel lost while reading but I promise that’s the point! You are right there with Patch on her journey. Writing a review for this is hard there is so much that goes on and so many nuances that can't speak for the risk of spoiling! I can say if you're a fan of Tim Burton then I think you would enjoy this book.
Thank you to the author and rrbooktours for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
This book was one of the most strangely written ones Ive read in a while. It had a poetic quality to it, that I would recommend reading it in one go or not you may lose the rhythm of it. It kind of read like a fable too. Essentially, it’s this girl who is the fiftieth girl in her lineage to bury her sickly mother. This was the conclusion of a spell/curse as she awoke 3 weeks later and was re-assembled and had a part of all 50 before her and their gifts. She was the most exquisite and all the kings wanted her. But King See is the one who seems to hold her favor the most. However, she does see all the kings and bargains with them to get her share back of items from the hotel that was her home. Basically she’s tricking them, and also their princes fall to her favor. It’s kind of hard to explain, but it all adds up in the end. Like I said, it reads very much like a fable or tale. The names are very odd but also are pretty straightforward in their meaning. It’s definitely a unique world and takes place after “The End”.
Almost like a darker Alice in Wonderland meets Sleeping Beauty.
👑 An unconventional monster romance with magic, rivalries and spice. 👑
The world building and lyricism reminded me a lot of Alice in Wonderland. Idk if it’s this overarching prophecy that makes it feel that way or what.
I will admit that at about 40% I started to skim a bit. The style was interesting but just not for me.
Otherwise, Patch is such a unique character and goes through a lot but adjusts rather quickly to everything. I really liked her growing acceptance of the changes befalling her.
The romance is a super slow burn so be prepared for that.
I think if you like an unconventional monster romance that’s very lyrical and magical this will work for you!!
I can not say enough about this book and I think this is in a good way and also a bad way. So the cover was super beautiful and eye catching. However the story is a it confusing in certain places but in a good way. I really thought the book itself was interesting, the story was unique and engaging. There is romance in this book too, but it is a snail crawl slow burn. There is a theme of Lady Patch and she is trying to accept herself. It is almost like a fable of old, similar to Aesop.
Patch is a strong FMC as well and there are several princes introduced to the readers in this book, leaving them to return in the next installment. This book reads like a fable with Victorian lyricism which I loved! It does get a little sad at points and I love that ending! ( This is a cliffhanger ending). I recommend this one to fans of different romantic, goth horror books.
I've read several of Kelly's books and this totally different style was surreal and outstanding!
It reminds me somewhat of Marissa Meyers surreal fairytale re-telling in her Gilded duology just in how the rhythms of the chapters go.
A dystopian post collapse of human society in this world with a newly unblinded to the supernatural Patch narrating the tale with ever increasingly ancientness as the time passes, it starts off slowly and then as what is happening to her comes to light it gets very monstrous indeed.
Honestly had no idea where this story was going till we got to the end but I know I want more!
"You're an exquisite creature, mistress." The book was great and fun, I actually enjoyed it. The concept of mannered monsters was unique. I was drawn to this book because of it's cover. The cover is so eye catching and captivating that I had to read this book, though it didn't turn out how I expected.
It took me atleast 20% to get into the book because the writing style was bit confusing for me and I'm also not used to this kind of writing style (it is like Bridgerton). But after 20% I was actually invested in the book. The storyline was great especially the last 30% and plot was totally unique. This is one of the reason whyy I liked the book, because of it's uniqueness.
The names of the kings were actually unusual and that's what intrigued me more to continue. The way kings and their princess described patch and always helps her, hype her was my favourite thing to read.
As for characters, they were well portrayed but I was not able to connect with them. Patch and King See's interaction felt flat at some point. Her interaction with other monsters and princes also didn't evoke much emotions in me. They were easily enthralled by her.
I'm excited for book 2, I actually want to know more and I think I'll fell better in next book as now I'm accustomed to Kelly's writing. I recommend this book and I'm sure many of you will love it.
So I spent the majority of this book feeling like I was on the edge of something. The way the characters spoke, the way we were given information, and the way things were described; all had you constantly interpreting and visualising a fantastical fantasy world. A wholly darker rabbit hole than Alice found herself in, with some peculiar peculiarities.
Our girl Patch goes to sleep one day, for a long time, and wakes up not so much herself anymore. But then her world is not so much her world anymore either. From dusk till dawn a world of monsters and magic shows itself more and more to her. Some frightening happenings frighten her, while other frights she finds delightfully fun.
Through this entire story, Patch has some rather intense character growth that feels both subtle and huge at the same time. And the 5 kings that are appearing one by one to vie for her attention are a mystery of their own. So while I felt like I was interpreting everything, I was kept grasping for the next detail to help me figure out what was going on and was would come next. And after that thrill ride and exciting ending, I’m dying to know what happens next.
Absolutely loved it. Kelly St Clare has outdone herself. If you are a fan of Alice in Wonderland and Corpse Bride, you’ll love this.
This is unlike anything I’ve read before! Kelly St Clare has done some remarkable world building in this new series. It’s a haunting story that takes place in the future (possibly our world) and there is an overarching theme that makes you wonder where the story will go. Characters are introduced in a lyrical style and it had me highlighting some great lines ! I can’t wait to see what is next for our heroine and her story! It’s a romance that I can’t wait to see the outcome of!
The new world built by Kelly St. Clare reminds me of Tim Burrton or Guillermo del Toro where something traditionally monstrous, though terrifying to most, contains some form of magic and beauty. This book is something between post-apocalyptic world and a fairy tale. Well worth the read and another expertly done slow burn. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Despite the very different style of writing and veiled descriptions meant to keep you guessing, the characters will still have characteristic sarcasm and strength of Kelly St. Clare books.
This was so unique! Definitely odd, yet intriguing. This felt like a spooky fever-dream romance. Perfect for fall! I can’t wait for the next book, I will say this ends on a cliffhanger. I absolutely love the FMC, writing, world, and all supporting characters.
I was one of the lucky ones who received an ARC of this book! Having read some of the author's other work, I was so excited to see what she had in store for this brand new series. And she did not disappoint! This book is unlike any I have read before.
At The End, five kings arose: Bring, Take, Raise, Change and See. The ancients gave each a purpose in the world that remained. Each was also given three Princes (monsters) who were loyal to only them and their purpose. Twelve hundred years later, after fifty mothers have suffered, the fifty-first daughter ,nicknamed Patch, loses her job and her mother. Once her mother has joined their forty-nine ancestors in death, the results are their sacrifice emerge at dusk and Patch becomes more than a cute name for Perantiqua. Patch perfectly describes her "monstrously exquisite" true form that appears from dusk to dawn each day. Each king has his own desires when it comes to the new monster on the block and each wants her for their own purposes. Suddenly thrust into the hidden world of monsters and kings, Patch must learn to navigate rules and circumstances beyond her previous comprehension and struggle to survive in her new reality.
The sheer amount of world building and character development that went into this first book is astounding. With hints of favorite childhood stories such as Alice and Wonderland and even The Nightmare Before Christmas, St. Clare paints a vivid picture and creates a sweeping Gothic story that sucks you right in and leaves you begging for more by the end. I cannot wait to read the next installment!
This was INTERESTING. Most of the book I kept wondering if this was going reverse harem and I stalked goodread's reviews to see if it was because I like to be AWARE of RH before RH happens, it's all about consent on my end. Sometimes I'm ready for it, most times I'm not. The logistics of RH just give me anxiety- that's too much banging for one chick. ANYWAYS- still not sure if this is going RH, don't think it is but I am still skeptical. You won't catch me by surprise with multiples d's. I haven't read a monster book in awhile, this had a fun spin to it that I have not experienced in all my book research. You'll have two hookups from a distance which is really more than her other series. The chick looks like Sally from the Nightmare Before Christmas in my mind. Weird- I'm into it.
3.5 This was a really good story, with great writing, I'm unfortunately not into monsters so much but love Kelly's books so was excited regardless. I'll definitely be there for the next one.
Soft DNF. I don’t know when I’ll come back to this. But it’s a bit strange. It’s still intriguing but I’m not in the mood for the type of weird this is right now.
This is an interesting book and world. Reading the description I didn’t anticipate the intricate and complex world building. I look forward to what book 2 brings.
Wow. Just wow! This book was such a fantastic read. I can honestly say I've never read anything like it, which makes it so intriguing and appealing. The characters are interesting, the plot is addicting, and the hint of spice adds that chef's kiss moment.
The book follows Patch, a nineteen-year-old girl who is thrust into the world of mystery and monsters after one fateful day changes everything for her. Something I love about this book is that the readers learn about the world and its rules at the same pace Patch does. Nothing is known from the get-go, and there were even times when I thought one thing was going to happen only to have the complete opposite occur!
The pacing of the plot is well-written, and there wasn't any point where I was bored or waiting for something exciting to happen. I was hooked from the very first sentence! I haven't read a lot of gothic romantasy books before, but I think Of Monsters of Kings is going to be my favorite! I think fans of the Kingdom of the Wicked series will have a great time reading the book, as well as anyone who has grown up loving books such as Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.
Now I have to impatiently sit on my hands and wait for book two to release because the ending left me craving even more of this beautifully written universe!
Such a rare and unique approach for a new series!! Unlike anything I have read from Kelly St Clare so far! I love the gothic approach of monsters as main characters!
You start the book completely blind to what is happening other than Patch living in a post apocalyptic world. Before sounds a lot like the real world while the Now is made up by a modern day Mary Shelley!
The world building was hard to follow while at the same time could be no other way. The reader lives and shares in the confusion the main character, Patch, feels throughout the book. We grow with her as she grows and learns and it’s just enough to make you not want to put the book down before learning the truth!
The Princes are all wonderfully written, I love that empathy and compassion proves to win them over and it is my hope that in future books they will grow wills of their own and truly experience a life outside of servitude!
I currently love the male main character, King See, but I feel that some time in the future this is going to change as completely as it does in books of similar genre, like Throne of Glass or Fourth Wing.
