This was a lot of fun, albeit as cheesy as a Stilton sandwich.
Cody Ziglar’s a much better fit on this book than on Miles Morales: Spider-Man and Justin Mason’s art was great; I particularly liked his design for the Earth-138 Dok Ock.

Arms race is a pretty fun spider punk read but not if you're hoping for something that's punk in a deeper sense than "fascism is bad"

Cody Ziglar é o escritor regular de Homem-Aranha: Miles Morales e também do Deadpool. Está fazendo um trabalho consistente nos dois títulos. Mas nessa minissérie do Homem-Aranha Punk, que conquistou o público nas animações do Aranhaverso, não parece ser o mesmo autor das revistas mensais. E nem mesmo o Punk-Aranha tem qualquer semelhança com o personagem que conhecemos, seja nos quadrinhos ou na animação. Aqui ele tem uma Banda Aranha, formada por vários Vingadores como o Capitão América, o Hulk e a Ms. Marvel. O vilão da vez é o Doutor Octopus. Mas a trama é chata e cansativa. Nem os desenhos ajudam, imagino que eram para ter uma cara de quadrinhos underground, mas não deu certo, não, desculpa, Marvel. Um quadrinho extremamente dispensável.

This devolves into a smashy-smashy finale that didn't 100% hold my attention, but I love the set up and the crew so much that I'm rounding up in my rating. Hobie Brown is up there with Cindy Moon for my all time fave spider characters! I think he is so freaking cool and the Spider-Band is such a cool crew. I hope someday I see them come to life in animation somehow. I think Ziglar did something incredibly novel with this character and he had a pretty big fanbase after the last Spider-verse film introduced him in animation.
I don't know what character the Cap character is based off of. He doesn't get as much development in this trade paperback as the others. Captain Anarchy is a pretty dope idea though. I think Mattea is a mix of Echo and Daredevil. This Riri is dating Shuri which is what a lot of us hoped for after Wakanda Forever, but it never came to fruition. I think it's interesting Kamala is just Kamala. There's no real change to her character compared to 616.
The story reads like any other spider story. Perhaps, if given more time, Ziglar would've come up with something novel re: Hobie's villains, too. There's enough there with Hobie being an answer to fascism, but we just get a Doc Ock with a vendetta that didn't make all that much sense to me.
Anyway, I loved the art, Hobie's crew is neat, this is an uncomfortably hot T'Challa, and this was fun to read!

That was cute. Lots of hope and people having fun while kicking evil fascist ass.
I have no idea who half these other universe characters are as I just grabbed this off the library shelf and have not read much of the new Spider-Verse stuff.

A visually loud but narratively empty comic, this Spider-Punk story is all style and no substance.
The plot is nearly impossible to follow, the characters are flat, and the dialogue tries so hard to sound modern that it becomes distracting.
There was some decent parts, but if you are doing an alternative universe they should have pushed harder to differentiate it from the mainline 616 universe.
It also leans heavily into Marvel’s recent trend of mantle-swapping characters like Ironheart and Shuri, but instead of adding depth, it feels more like forced inclusion that doesn’t serve the story.
The art is easily the highlight—dynamic, colorful, and energetic—and there’s a fun mecha moment that almost saves it, but not quite. Was an homage to Mega XLR which I did appreciate.
Overall, it reads less like a passionate story and more like a rushed, checkbox project. Worth flipping through for the visuals, but not much else.

Do you like Super Sentai? Do you like Spider-Man? Then you're in luck here, as Spider-Punk and his friends face off against Justin Hammer and Doc Ock in a throwdown battle that the Power Rangers themselves would be envious off.
However, when you get past the spectacle, it feels like we're a little light on substance. There's not much in terms of development or even an arc for any of the characters, and I feel like Cody Ziglar's problem of wanting to write a book about characters that aren't the ones on the front cover rears its head again, because we get a lot of the side characters compared to Hobie himself.
Alright to lose yourself in for a little while, but don't expect anything as revolutionary as Hobie and his friends are.

This book was actually so boring and garbage, seriously a power ranger ass fight as the final fight??? The art hard carried this book and it was boring and felt like the story was written by a 11 year old that Larps as being an alternative person; this comic is actual garbage, waste of my time and it genuinely had me questioning what I was doing with my life. The story felt like it was written backwards, the plot was horrid, jokes weren’t remotely funny, and I hate how this book tried so hard to appeal to alternative people like that wasn’t already the audience. I hate this comic so much nobody should ever waste their time on this poo.

Yet another Earth-138 (Punk rock influenced universe) adventure ...
I think this is the first we've seen of the full Spider Band.
It consists of:

Captain Anarchy
Mz. Marvel
Daredevil
Spider-Punk
After the last Spider-Punk miniseries we've got a nation being rebuilt. Spider-Punk and the Spider Band are working with the Black Panthers of Wakanda to start rebuilding America. Meanwhile, Dok Ock and Justin Hammer are trying to sell the 'powers that be' on their Sentinel tech.
...and at some point the Spider Van goes full on Megazord.

Wuzzat, I fought Spider-Punk was Bri-ish?
Anyways the alt-covers are splashy and fantastic. The tale, well maybe more homage to Woody's fascist-killing guitar than punk per se (or did I miss some references to The Buzzcocks, the Pistols and moving East from the UK, the Ex)?
The whole gundam/transformer/giant robot Spider-Van wind-up and reveal left me cold. Your mileage may vary especially if your kinda fonda Wakanda, but personally I would have traded all that for Hobart having a mouth/mind like John Constantine.

I only knew the Spider-Punk character from the Spider-Verse movie but I liked him very much in that movie!! Picking this volume up--EVEN THOUGH IT IS COLLECTING ISSUES 1-4 OF A COMIC WHICH IMPLIES IT SHOULD BE A GOOD STARTING POINT--I felt like I had definitely missed...some things...? Like Spider-Punk assassinating the president who was Norman Osborn? I guess?
But uhhhhh it was a fun read and the art was really cool!

3.5⭐ rounded up.
I know it probably takes a while for a new character or variation to work out the kinks and bugs. However, I'm glad we got to see more of Hobie and how he interacts with his friends. I'm not much of a fan of this Spider-Man so far. I do like his friends though.

A weird take on Spider-man. Poor grammar and spell errors in the speech bubbles took me out of immersion. I liked the interpretation of Doctor Octopus and how decisive he was. The van robot was silly.

August 1, 2025This was a fun read, and kept the tone of the previous series. It was nice to see the spider band grow closer, and I loooved mattea being a regular in the comics. I think this series did a great job with fun dynamics and relationships between characters, introducing many fun cast members.
However, at the same time, I feel like it was so focused on this fun that it neglected to give some characters depth or go into their minds dealing with this new world. Our spider band has gone from some hard times to being at the frontier of a new nation, and we don't get to really see the emotional effects of that or how that tied into their identity. Antagonists like Rhino and Bullseye, who I was excited to see, felt like brief introductions and quick exits not really adding to the world or plot, but they did have fun scenes and quippy panels.
I loved how previous comics really showed us the world building of this earth, and I missed that in this comic. I wish I knew more about doc ock's visions and the sycophants affiliation with Osborn, and where did lizard and vulture who had such an amazing entrance come from and what do their stories look like in this world? Obviously those things can be fleshed out in future comics, but I feel like focusing on the depth and story of the stories leading the plot could've done more for the story than a bunch of guest appearances.
BUT OFC, I say all of this and am so picky because I love these comics, and they are always a great read. Anyways, loooved shuri and riri as well as mattea and kamala- spider van and spider band for life!
