Berkeley policewoman Jill Smith investigates a series of bizarre events involving a dentist attacked by a eucalyptus tree, a female mountain climber, and murder
Susan Dunlap is best known for her Jill Smith detective series, but she is a prolific and much loved writer of crime and mystery fiction, including award-winning short stories.
I listened to this and it was pretty easy to follow. Sometimes I lose track of the characters and miss some clues or confuse who knows what.
This is a pretty straight forward narrative of a police procedural.
Combative neighbors are filing reports at each other over the years, until a visiting friend is killed in a bizarre way. Jill interviews the witnesses and determines that the victim was probably not just in the wrong place at the wrong time but the intended victim. Not the homeowner who likes to sunbathe nude on the deck where the accident happened.
Along the way we learn a bit about the crazy Berkeley city ordinances which protect the trees, mountain climbing and way way too much about eucalyptus trees.
I am a sucker for the Title Pun, even though the author or the editor runs the risk of alienating the 99% of people who claim to disdain puns but secretly enjoy them so they can never buy this book because then someone would see it and know they like puns!
